GETTING STARTED

Begin with São Francisco de Assis, Rosário Bridge and Church, and Museu Regional. On day two, combine Rotunda with Carmo, Museu dos Sinos and Rua Getúlio Vargas’s houses, pausing at Taberna d’Omar. Grouping walks and choosing interiors helps control spending; arrival and departure are outside the two days.

Who it is for: Travellers who enjoy history, architecture and Minas Gerais food and want to control transport and admission costs.

Choose a base that fits the walks

In São João del-Rei, it is worth allowing time for details: a soapstone portal, the arches of a bridge, objects kept in a historic house. To enjoy two days without paying for a journey at every stop, group São Francisco de Assis, Rosário Bridge and Church and Museu Regional on day one. On day two, combine railway heritage with Carmo, Museu dos Sinos and Rua Getúlio Vargas.

These are two full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. This selection focuses on the historic core; Tiradentes and a broader trip around Minas Gerais’s historic cities need extra days. For accommodation, compare addresses near Praça Frei Orlando, where the itinerary begins, and along Rua Getúlio Vargas–Carmo, with stops on both days. Add arrival transport to the stay cost when assessing total spending.

If coming via Belo Horizonte, the capital’s official portal identifies Viação Sandra as a road transport provider to São João del-Rei. Research times and fares for your date and organise the final leg to accommodation. After leaving luggage, the centre is easier to enjoy on foot.

São Francisco de Assis: allow time for portal and altars

Begin in Praça Frei Orlando before Igreja de São Francisco de Assis. Before continuing, take time over the soapstone portal: its entrance details already provide a rewarding first stop. The official guide associates works with Aleijadinho, executed by Francisco de Lima Cerqueira.

Inside, the nave’s six altars extend the visit for lovers of religious architecture. Confirm access and any charges at the churches locally. After São Francisco, continue to Rosário Bridge and its namesake church, where the walk also begins to introduce the city’s Black population history.

Rosário Bridge and Church: two stops, one walk

At Rosário Bridge, stop to observe the stone construction and take photographs before continuing. It takes its name from the nearby Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, so it makes sense to visit both along the same walk to Praça Embaixador Gastão da Cunha.

The church is linked to Irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito dos Homens Pretos and has an important place in São João del-Rei’s Black memory. When the church is open, rococo decoration adds another reason to enter. Continue to Rua Getúlio Vargas, where the food break fits before the Regional afternoon.

Museu Regional: city life inside the house

Keep the first afternoon for Museu Regional, Rua Marechal Deodoro, 12. Merchant João Antônio da Silva Mourão’s former home gained heritage protection in 1946 and opened as a museum in 1963. After the churches, the house changes the subject: furniture, paintings, religious objects and tools help you explore everyday life too.

The visit particularly suits those who enjoy looking at objects beyond façades. Since published hours conflict, confirm opening and any admission charge on (32) 99159-1827. If the better visiting window is morning, begin with the museum and leave São Francisco and Rosário for the afternoon.

Rotunda: fit railway history into day two

Begin day two with railway heritage if trains are among your interests. The station and Museu Ferroviário are at Avenida Hermílio Alves, 366, in a complex also including Rotunda. It changes the theme after a day of churches and historic houses before continuing to Carmo.

Museu da Rotunda has its own admission. The VLI-linked channel lists sessions at 09:00 and 16:00 Thursday to Saturday and 09:00 Sunday; confirm your date’s session and purchase there. Choosing 09:00 allows Carmo and Museu dos Sinos afterwards. At 16:00, reverse the order and leave the railway complex for the afternoon.

To control the budget, choose this admission for your interest in the theme. If bells and religious history appeal more, begin directly at Carmo and focus the morning there. The tourist train to Tiradentes deserves extra time: it remains a paid extension outside these two days in the centre.

Carmo and Museu dos Sinos: discover the history behind ringing

In Praça Carlos Gomes, look for Nossa Senhora do Carmo’s octagonal towers and observe Francisco de Lima Cerqueira’s façade. This follows the morning Rotunda visit, or begins the day for those concentrating on architecture and bell-ringing culture.

In the church’s upper galleries at number 35, Museu dos Sinos presents casting, bell history, local bell-ringers and the language of ringing. The visit gives meaning to a feature accompanying the whole itinerary: towers become more than scenery. Check hours and tickets on (32) 3371-7996.

Continue along Rua Getúlio Vargas afterwards. Historic houses and Catedral do Pilar’s façade extend the walk, and Taberna d’Omar allows a meal or coffee along the same stretch.

Rua Getúlio Vargas: historic houses and Taberna d’Omar

Former Rua Direita is today’s Rua Getúlio Vargas. Among historic houses and the Rosário, Pilar and Carmo reference points, it ties the two days together. On day two, walk with time to observe façades and pause before Catedral do Pilar, included here as an exterior visit.

To eat without leaving the route, we suggest Taberna d’Omar, a restaurant and café at Rua Getúlio Vargas, 238. It describes its cooking as artisanal, and the location fits a meal after Rosário on day one or a break beside Carmo’s outing on day two.

On Taberna’s own channel, open the São João del-Rei links, which are separate from Tiradentes. Consult the menu and hours to choose between lunch and coffee and fit the break between visits.

Velocidade brings theatre on 21 and 22 October 2026

In town on 21 or 22 October 2026? Add an evening at Teatro Municipal de São João del-Rei, Rua Hermílio Alves, no street number. Grupo Quatroloscinco presents Velocidade at 20:00 with free tickets. The play explores perceptions of time in family relationships, work and memories, combining contemporary culture with the heritage visited during the day.

Check availability and ticket collection through the producer’s link. If travelling on other dates, consult the cultural programme for a performance that fits your stay.

Turn the itinerary into a budget and checklist

With visits chosen, open Calculadora de Viagem and enter destination, total duration, people and travel style. It presents estimates in reais for accommodation, food and transport, with a 15% margin. Compare with figures researched directly and add chosen admissions, such as Rotunda. Treat the total as illustrative rather than a quotation.

In Mala Inteligente, enter full duration including arrival and departure, expected climate and traveller profiles. Review the checklist for walks between squares, churches and museums, particularly comfortable shoes and protection appropriate to the forecast.

For further food, accommodation and other local services, open São João del-Rei’s Viajandar page. Compare addresses with the itinerary stops so future choices remain close to what you want to explore.

Questions to help you decide

Are two days enough to explore São João del-Rei?

Two full days allow this selection of the historic core, with churches, museums and central streets. Arrival and departure are separate. To include Tiradentes and other historic Minas Gerais cities, add days and arrange transport separately.

Do I need a car for this itinerary?

Stops are grouped for walking: Rosário Bridge with Rosário Church; Carmo and Museu dos Sinos with Rua Getúlio Vargas. Arrival transport to accommodation is a separate decision, particularly with luggage. Staying near these axes helps avoid rides between visits.

How can I control spending without stripping the outing?

Give time to squares, Rosário Bridge, façades and Rua Getúlio Vargas’s houses. Choose interiors by interest: daily life and sacred art at Regional, bell-ringing at Museu dos Sinos or railway heritage at Rotunda. Compare researched prices before choosing how many museums.

Which weekdays suit the suggested sequence?

Wednesday–Thursday or Thursday–Friday are good pairs for beginning planning: Regional on day one and Rotunda on day two, following published opening days. Contacts for arranging times appear in museum sections.

Is the train ride included in the two days?

No. The tourist link with Tiradentes is a paid extension outside this central two-day selection. To add it, check your desired date through the VLI-linked service channel in the railway section.
