Where to stay in Pécs and what to do in four full days
Choose where to stay in Pécs and plan four full days of history, Zsolnay ceramics and Tettye, with free visits and an alternative for rain.

GETTING STARTED
Choose a base near Széchenyi or compare the Király–Búza tér area. Combine two days in the centre, one in Zsolnay and another between Tettye and Vasarely, with arrival and departure counted separately. Enjoy the Roman Lapidarium and Zsolnay’s free outdoor spaces; if it rains on day four, replace the park with the Early Christian Mausoleum.
Who it is for: Brazilians including four full days in Pécs within a longer trip around Hungary who want to combine history, ceramics, art and walks, choosing accommodation and tickets carefully.Four days to combine the different sides of Pécs
In Pécs, you can start the day in front of a former mosque, find Roman stones in a square and finish by looking at Csontváry’s landscapes. To enjoy this mix, start your accommodation search around Széchenyi Square and compare addresses along Király utca–Búza tér. A central base makes it easier to combine history, art and breaks without crossing from one side of the city to the other for every visit.
The sequence below devotes two days to the historic centre, one to the Zsolnay complex and another to Tettye and the Vasarely Museum. These are four full days within a longer trip around Hungary, excluding arrival and departure. This itinerary gives you time for Pécs’s collections and walks; the rest of your trip around the country needs its own schedule.
In November 2026, preferably choose four days from Thursday to Sunday, starting from 5 November. This puts Zsolnay on Saturday, allows for lunch at Room Bistro and avoids Monday, when Csontváry, Vasarely and the Roman Lapidarium close. For other dates, check the calendars before deciding the order.
Where to stay: near Széchenyi or along Király–Búza tér
Start looking around Széchenyi if history and museums are your priorities. Day one begins in the square, and the route to the Cathedral goes along Janus Pannonius utca and Sétatér. Well-placed accommodation in this area also makes it easier to return between visits. When comparing addresses, trace these routes on the map: the word “central” in a listing does not tell the whole story.
Include the Király utca–Búza tér area in your comparison if you want to stay near the pedestrian street, cafés, restaurants and National Theatre, on the side of the centre facing Zsolnay. Also check the walk to the Cathedral. Choose by combining location, the nightly rate for your dates and the comfort you are looking for.
Keep one base for these four days. Visit Zsolnay and Tettye from there, without needing to change accommodation. Compare addresses with Tüke Busz stops too, to decide how much you want to walk and when to use buses.
Arriving and travelling between visits
You can include Pécs in a trip around Hungary by arriving on public transport. InterCity trains and MÁV group buses connect it with Budapest, with planning through the integrated system and MÁVPlusz app. Search for your date and exact departure point; if leaving from the airport, check the full journey and any necessary connections.
Within the city, walk between the central sights and use the Tüke Busz network to assess journeys to Zsolnay and Tettye. Your accommodation’s address helps you decide where it makes sense to board. You can follow this itinerary without renting a car just for these four days.
If arriving by car, include parking when comparing accommodation. The Diocese has no visitor car park of its own and lists paid spaces in nearby streets. On the Cathedral day, leave the car and walk to Cella Septichora and Barbakán, without looking for another space at every stop.
Day 1: Széchenyi Square, Roman stones and Csontváry
Start in Széchenyi Square and walk around to observe the former Gázi Kászim Mosque, the Zsolnay fountain and the equestrian statue of János Hunyadi. Architecture, ceramics and monuments come together on this first walk. The suggested outing here is around the square; a visit inside the church housed in the former mosque should be arranged separately.
From 10:00, enter the Roman Lapidarium at JPM SZ12, at Széchenyi tér 12. The courtyard brings together approximately fifty stone monuments, mainly from the 2nd to 4th centuries, found in Pécs and the Baranya region. Look at the inscriptions and carved pieces to connect Roman history with beliefs and everyday life. Admission to the lapidarium is free; Genius Loci is a separate exhibition with its own admission.
For a break, include a late breakfast or brunch at Reggeli, a food and cultural venue on the central route. It is a chance to sit down after seeing the Roman stones and before the next walk, with food, coffee and drinks presented on its own website. Check opening before you go. Afterwards, continue along Király utca, the pedestrian street where the National Theatre stands.
In the afternoon, head back towards Janus Pannonius utca 11 for the Csontváry Museum. The collection includes Lonely Cedar and the monumental Baalbek, connecting painting with landscapes the artist observed on his travels. Make this your main afternoon stop and include admission to the collection in your budget. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00.

The Széchenyi walk brings together architecture and monuments before a stop at the Roman Lapidarium in the square itself.

Walk from the centre along Janus Pannonius utca and Sétatér to Pécs Cathedral. The sightseeing ticket includes the nave, crypt, chapels of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, and tower. It is useful to know this list before buying: you can arrange visits to the different spaces without paying again for access already included.
Check the services, during which sightseeing visits are suspended, and let the weather determine whether you climb the tower. The ticket can be used on the day of purchase and the following day; check the conditions if you need to split the visit. Corpus Christi Chapel has free access for prayer and quiet reflection, separate from the full sightseeing visit.
Then visit Cella Septichora to discover an even older layer of Pécs. The UNESCO-recognised Early Christian complex preserves 4th-century graves and burial chambers, some with paintings and Christian symbols. The visitor centre and Early Christian Mausoleum have entrances at different locations. In this itinerary, leave the Mausoleum for day four’s rainy-weather alternative; Apáca utca 8 and 14 are not included in the November programme.
Finish the walk beside Barbakán, a Gothic defensive tower linked to the former episcopal castle, with sections of the wall and moat alongside it. Its proximity to the Cathedral lets you end the day in the same area. We suggest looking at the complex during the walk; check access conditions if you wish to climb the tower.

Allow a morning for the Cathedral, then continue to Cella Septichora to make the most of visits in the same area.

Set aside day three for the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, occupying five hectares of the former industrial and residential complex. Before entering the collections, walk among the buildings, parks and ceramic sculptures. Notice the façades and ornamental details: they make the walk worthwhile in themselves. The shared outdoor areas are free to enter during the complex’s opening hours, 06:00–21:00.
Begin the indoor visits with the Gyugyi Collection to explore artistic ceramics in greater depth. If you also want to understand the history of production, add the exhibition about the family and factory afterwards. The Pink Exhibition is another possibility for anyone wanting more time with the collections. Choose according to your interests and allow time to look at each one without rushing.
Saturday works well in November 2026. From 2 November, Gyugyi and the Pink Exhibition open Thursday to Saturday, 10:00–17:00, and Sunday, 10:00–16:00; they close Monday to Wednesday. The family and factory exhibition operates Tuesday to Sunday, with its own calendar. Check its hours if you decide to add it.
Between visits, have lunch at Room Bistro & Club, at Zsolnay Vilmos utca 16. Staying in the complex avoids a journey to the centre just to eat. The official page lists service Monday to Saturday, 10:00–15:00, with a daily menu from 11:30 to 14:30; it closes on Sundays. A vegetarian alternative is listed for the daily menu, but check the offering for your date.

Notice Zsolnay’s wall and roof tiles: your encounter with ceramics begins before you enter the collections.

Devote the morning to Tettye, north of Pécs beside the Mecsek slopes. Walk through the park and look at the ruins: after days of churches and collections, this makes a welcome change of pace. You can arrive on foot or by public transport; choose the route according to your accommodation and the walk you want to take.
On returning to the centre, visit the Vasarely Museum at Káptalan utca 3. The artist was born in Pécs, and the collection traces his early drawings, geometric compositions, kinetic works and three-dimensional colour effects. The exhibition was renewed in 2026 and includes an interactive educational space. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00.
If it rains, visit Vasarely in the morning and the Early Christian Mausoleum in the afternoon, leaving Tettye out that day. The Mausoleum adds another part of the 4th-century funerary heritage to your Cella Septichora visit, without repeating day two’s outing. On Sundays in November 2026 from the 8th onwards, it opens 10:00–17:00, with the ticket office open until 16:30. Go to Vasarely first, as it has longer opening hours, and set aside the afternoon for the Mausoleum before it closes.
This alternative works even if you have already visited Csontváry on day one. If you swapped the museums and began the trip with Vasarely, use the rainy morning for Csontváry, at Janus Pannonius utca 11, keeping the Mausoleum for the afternoon. That way, every stop offers a new visit.
Take special care with Sunday 1 November 2026: the Mausoleum will be closed. The suggested Thursday-to-Sunday sequence starts from 5 November and avoids this exception. Tettye Cave is also excluded from the month’s main itinerary, as it regularly closes from 1 November to 15 March; its special opening for one day is listed in the events section below.

Among Tettye’s ruins and paths, enjoy a morning in the park before returning to the central museums.

Start the calculation by choosing what you want to see inside. The main sequence includes Csontváry, the Cathedral, Cella Septichora, Gyugyi and Vasarely. The Zsolnay family and factory exhibition is an optional addition according to your interests; the Mausoleum is part of the rainy-weather alternative. With this list in hand, compare individual tickets with combined ones.
Heritage is valid for four days, but it is only worth buying if the places you want to visit are included and open during that period. Check the operator’s complete list and keep the Cathedral, Csontváry and Vasarely in a separate calculation until you verify their tickets.
Pay attention to Time Traveller if following the rainy-weather alternative: visiting Cella Septichora on Friday and the Mausoleum on Sunday spans three calendar days, while the ticket is valid for two. In that case, compare separate tickets or another combination covering your choices, without buying the same admission twice.
Between paid visits, enjoy what the free outings offer. The Lapidarium introduces Roman Pécs, and Zsolnay’s courtyards let you observe the architecture of the former industrial complex. Both deserve time in the itinerary, even if you decide to reduce the number of exhibitions.
- JPM SZ12 Roman Lapidarium: free admission at Széchenyi tér 12.
- Zsolnay’s shared outdoor areas: free access during the complex’s opening hours.
- Cathedral: ticket including nave, crypt, chapels of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, and tower, subject to opening conditions.
- Time Traveller: Cella Septichora, the Early Christian Mausoleum and the Medieval University, valid for two days.
- Heritage: the Zsolnay and Early Christian attractions listed by the operator, valid for four days.
November 2026: Advent in the square and a special cave visit
Will you be in Pécs between 27 November and 24 December 2026? Include another visit to Széchenyi Square for XV Advent Pécs, confirmed in the municipal calendar checked on 28 October 2026. It is an opportunity to enjoy the Advent programme at a place you will already know from day one. Check the official calendar for the details available for your date before deciding when to visit.
For anyone already in the city on Sunday 1 November 2026, Tettye Cave will open exceptionally from 10:00 to 18:00, with the final guided tour at 17:00. The visit presents the calcareous tufa formation and its former use as housing, adding a different experience to the park and ruins. This opening applies only to the announced date.
On that same 1 November, Cella Septichora and the Mausoleum will be closed. From 4 November, both operate Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00, with the ticket office open until 16:30. When arranging the trip, use these hours to schedule indoor visits and leave the walks to fill the rest of the day.
Plan your budget and use the outings to guide your packing
Budget for your Pécs stay using accommodation prices for your dates, transport on arrival and departure, the city buses you intend to use, meals and your chosen admissions. Grouping the Cathedral, Cella Septichora and Barbakán and having lunch in the Zsolnay complex helps avoid extra journeys. The total, however, depends on your bookings and choices.
For spending in Hungary, record prices researched directly with the services you intend to book. Viajandar’s Calculadora de Viagem uses reference amounts in reais and does not convert currencies or provide international quotes; do not enter those reference amounts as Pécs prices in your budget.
Then take the itinerary to Mala Inteligente. Enter the total trip duration, including arrival and departure, select traveller profiles and adjust the climate to the forecast shortly before departure. Use the walks through the centre, the outdoor morning in Tettye and the museum visits to review the checklist and set aside what you will take with you each day.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation around Széchenyi Square | For those wanting to group the historic sights and return to their accommodation between visits. | This is the suggested base for this itinerary. Zsolnay and Tettye are separate outings, on foot or by bus depending on the address. |
| Accommodation along Király utca–Búza tér | For those wanting to stay near the walk along Király utca and on the side of the centre facing Zsolnay. | Check the route to the Cathedral too. The advantage sought here is location; compare nightly rates for your dates. |
| Zsolnay’s shared outdoor areas | For those wanting to discover the architecture, courtyards and ceramic sculptures. | Access is free during the complex’s opening hours, but exhibitions have their own tickets. |
| Zsolnay with the Gyugyi Collection | For those wanting to explore artistic ceramics in depth without visiting every collection. | Requires a ticket and attention to the winter calendar. Add the family and factory exhibition if you also want to learn about the industrial history. |
| Individual tickets | For those choosing only a few paid visits. | Add up only the admissions you intend to use and compare the total with combined tickets before buying. |
| Time Traveller or Heritage | For those planning to visit several Early Christian sites or combine them with Zsolnay attractions. | Valid for two and four days respectively. Check included attractions and opening days; calculate the Cathedral, Csontváry and Vasarely separately. |

Questions to help you decide
Which area should I choose for a stay in Pécs?
Start looking around Széchenyi Square to group the historic sights. Compare the Király utca–Búza tér area too if you want to stay near the pedestrian street and on the side of the centre facing Zsolnay. Check the exact address and nightly rates for your dates.
Do I need a car for these four days?
You can follow this sequence without renting a car: you can arrive by train or bus, walk between central sights and use Tüke Busz city buses. For Zsolnay and Tettye, check routes from your accommodation.
Which visits have free admission?
The JPM SZ12 Roman Lapidarium has free admission, as do Zsolnay’s shared outdoor areas during the complex’s opening hours. Other exhibitions at these venues have their own rules.
Can I visit all the Zsolnay exhibitions on any day?
No. From 2 November 2026, Gyugyi and the Pink Exhibition open Thursday to Saturday, 10:00–17:00, and Sunday, 10:00–16:00. The family and factory exhibition operates Tuesday to Sunday, with its own calendar. Saturday makes it easier to combine the collections with lunch at Room Bistro, which closes on Sundays.
How can I spend a rainy day four without repeating Csontváry?
Replace Tettye with a morning at the Vasarely Museum and an afternoon at the Early Christian Mausoleum, leaving the Mausoleum out of day two. On Sundays in November 2026 from the 8th onwards, Vasarely opens 10:00–18:00 and the Mausoleum 10:00–17:00, with the ticket office open until 16:30. The Mausoleum closes on 1 November.
Does Tettye Cave open in November?
The regular calendar lists closure from 1 November to 15 March. There is an exceptional opening on 1 November 2026, 10:00–18:00, with the final guided tour at 17:00. On the other days of November, keep the outing to the park and ruins.
Is a combined pass worth buying?
It depends on your chosen visits. Time Traveller includes Cella Septichora, the Early Christian Mausoleum and the Medieval University and is valid for two days. Heritage lasts four days and brings together the Zsolnay and Early Christian attractions listed by the operator. Compare the total for individual tickets and check whether the visits fit within the validity period. Cella on Friday and the Mausoleum on Sunday span three calendar days: do not plan that combination relying on a two-day pass.
Do the four days include arrival and departure?
No. These are four full sightseeing days within a longer trip around Hungary. Arrival and departure are counted separately; the number of nights depends on your transport arrangements.
