Four Days in Vilnius Without a Car: Free Attractions, Art and Lithuanian Food
Four full car-free days in Vilnius: the Cathedral, Gediminas, Užupis, Lithuanian food, museums to suit you, base suggestions and practical alternatives.

GETTING STARTED
Organise four full days by area: the Cathedral and Gediminas; Bernardinų, St Anne's and Užupis; the Gate of Dawn and MO; and the Money Museum and a crossing of the Neris. Combine free admission with museums chosen to suit your interests, meals along the way and a base close to the sights. Arrival and departure days are not included.
Who it is for: Brazilians on a longer trip around Europe who want to spend four full days in Vilnius without a car, choose paid attractions according to their interests and stay close to the sights.Four days with room to choose
You can plan four days in Vilnius with plenty of free sightseeing and save admission fees for the subjects that interest you most. The Cathedral, Gediminas Hill, Bernardinų Garden and the Money Museum already offer architecture, scenery and an indoor cultural visit. Then you can decide whether to explore the castle's history further in the tower or devote part of your budget to art at MO and the National Gallery.
This itinerary covers four full days within a longer trip around Europe: arrival and departure are not included. The sequence groups places that work well together on the same outing, but you can rearrange the days. Before organising the rest, schedule the Money Museum between Tuesday and Saturday, avoid MO on Tuesday and keep the National Gallery off your schedule on Mondays and public holidays.
A base that makes getting out and about easier
My suggestion when looking for accommodation is to start with the Old Town, using Pilies Street as a reference point. This location works well for the first day at the Cathedral and Gediminas, as well as outings to St Anne's and Užupis. When comparing listings, check the exact address on the map: the idea is to make walking to the sights easier, without assuming that every property advertised as central is equally convenient.
Another area to research is the stretch between Vilniaus Street and Gediminas Avenue, especially if the Money Museum and the crossing to the National Gallery matter more to your choice. These are suggested bases derived from the sightseeing routes, not recommendations for specific hotels or promises of low nightly rates. Compare the total cost of your stay with the journeys each address adds.
For travel from the airport, JUDU lists buses 88 and 3G to the city centre, 1 and 2 to the station, and night services 88N and N8. Choose your connection after locating your accommodation and the relevant stop. The operator lists payment through the JUDU app, a transport card and a contactless bank card; check the instructions for the method you intend to use.
The Cathedral and a first stop for Lithuanian food
Start the first day in Cathedral Square, at Katedros a. 2. The Classical façade makes the complex easy to recognise at first glance; inside the Cathedral of St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus, the Chapel of St Casimir provides a specific reason to step inside. Go Vilnius lists admission to the church as free. Respect religious services and treat the bell tower and catacombs as separate visits, without assuming that they are also free.
From the square, head towards Gediminas and leave your meal until after you come back down. The suggestion is Etno Dvaras at Pilies g. 16: the restaurant's own website highlights traditional Lithuanian cuisine and cepelinai, a useful indication for anyone wanting to try local food. Check the day's menu and, after eating, continue along Pilies Street. This choice is based on its location along the route and the cuisine it offers, with no promise of an inexpensive meal.

Cathedral Square opens the itinerary; take in the façade and separate bell tower before continuing to Gediminas Hill.

Gediminas: a free hill visit, with the tower as an option
On Gediminas Hill, you can separate two experiences. According to the National Museum of Lithuania, the hill is free to visit during the day; the tower offers castle history, interactive exhibitions and panoramic city views, with its own admission ticket. If that content sparks your curiosity, include a visit inside. If you want to walk around the hill and take in the complex, you do not need to buy admission to the tower to make the outing worthwhile.
The walking route starts on the Vilnia River side, via Trispalvė. The museum states that this path is not suitable for bicycles, wheelchairs or pushchairs. The funicular departs from the courtyard of the Old Arsenal, at Arsenalo g. 3, and also has a separate charge. Check that it is operating if you want to use it; afterwards, resume the route towards Pilies for your lunch stop.

Gediminas Tower provides a landmark for the first day and invites you to choose how much of the castle's history you want to explore.

Start the day outdoors in Bernardinų
Begin the second day in Bernardinų Garden, at B. Radvilaitės g. 8A. It lies between Gediminas Hill, the Vilnelė River and Bernardinų Monastery, making it a useful link between the first day's landmarks and the walk to St Anne's. Go Vilnius lists admission as free.
The garden has a botanical display, and its historic layout was restored in 2013. It is worth going in to stroll along the paths and take a break before returning to the city's façades and streets. The archive photograph shows the park in autumn; it does not indicate what the vegetation will look like or whether any fountains will be operating during your visit. Leave in the direction of Maironio g. 8, the address of St Anne's.

St Anne's: pay attention to the façade and opening hours
At St Anne's, pause in front of the façade before thinking about your next stop. The Late Gothic church, beside the Bernardinų complex, offers a change in architectural style from the previous day's Cathedral. Go Vilnius lists admission as free, but seeing the interior requires more careful timing.
The hours provided are Tuesday to Friday, 16:30–19:00; Saturday, 10:30–19:00; and Sunday, 09:00–17:00. On a weekday morning, therefore, plan to view the exterior. If you want to go inside, one suggestion is to continue to Užupis, have lunch at Paupys Market and return to St Anne's in the late afternoon, after reconfirming the opening hours. This gives you a practical route without having to wait for the church to open.

Allow time to look at the details of St Anne's façade before crossing to Užupis.

Užupis on foot, with a meal in Paupys
Cross the Vilnelė to explore Užupis. The neighbourhood's symbolic declaration of independence took place on 1 April 1997, and its artistic identity provides a walk with clearly defined stops: the bridge, the mermaid, the Angel of Užupis and the Constitution plaques at Paupio g. 4. The Constitution has 41 articles; set aside a moment to read a few and appreciate the humour behind the idea, without confusing this artistic republic with an independent country.
Go Vilnius also features the arts incubator and its installations, which change over time. Take a look at whatever is accessible during your walk, without counting on entry to every studio. After the plaques, continue to Paupys Market, at Aukštaičių g. 7.
The market's own website confirms restaurants serving different cuisines, bars and greenery in the indoor space. It is a good meal suggestion for people travelling in a group who want to choose different dishes at the same address. Compare menus before ordering: variety helps you choose, but does not establish that prices are low. If you plan to visit the interior of St Anne's, take this break before returning to the church.
The Gate of Dawn and the walk to MO
On the third day, start in the southern part of the Old Town at the Gate of Dawn, at Aušros Vartų g. 14. According to Go Vilnius, this is the only surviving gate of the ten in the old city wall described by the source. The chapel houses the image of the Virgin of Mercy and has free admission. For November to April, the listed hours are 07:00–19:00; confirm access for your visit and respect the space's religious use.
Next, walk along Aušros Vartų Street towards the Town Hall. For lunch along this route, Etno Dvaras lists a branch at number 2, an alternative to the Pilies branch if you have not yet tried Lithuanian cuisine. If you would prefer to eat at your afternoon destination, continue to MO and take a break at the museum's bistro. Both options avoid crossing the city just for a meal.
MO: art, architecture and a break at the same address
MO Museum, at Pylimo g. 17, is an option for anyone wanting to bring modern and contemporary Lithuanian art into their trip. The building designed by Daniel Libeskind adds architectural interest to the visit. It is worth setting aside the afternoon here if these subjects appeal to you; there is no need to buy a ticket simply because the museum is on your route.
The visitor information page lists regular opening hours of 10:00–20:00, with closures on Tuesdays and also on 24 and 25 December. At the same address, MO Bistro offers a place to stop for food, and the museum itself presents it as a venue for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bistro has its own opening hours: check them before relying on it for a meal.
If you choose to focus your budget on another art museum, keep a stop at MO's sculpture garden, which is advertised as open 24 hours. This information applies to the garden, not the exhibition galleries. It lets you include an outdoor experience along the route after the Gate of Dawn.
A free museum before Gediminas Avenue
Schedule the fourth route for a day between Tuesday and Saturday, and start at the Money Museum, at Totorių g. 2/8. The Bank of Lithuania confirms free admission and content covering world and Lithuanian monetary history, the development of banking and interactive features. The pyramid of one-cent litas coins is one of the elements highlighted by the institution.
Next, head to Gediminas Avenue. It links Cathedral Square to Parliament over just more than 1.8 km and brings together 19th- and 20th-century buildings, cultural institutions and shops. You can walk part of it and observe the changes in architecture before heading to the river, without making the entire avenue obligatory.
For a meal before the crossing, one suggestion is to look into the Etno Dvaras branch at Vilniaus g. 18, listed on the restaurant's website. If you have already tried its food on the other days, use this stop only if it still suits your appetite and route. Afterwards, walk towards the White Bridge to reach the other bank of the Neris.
Cross the Neris for another art option
The National Gallery, at Konstitucijos pr. 22, extends the itinerary beyond the Old Town. The institution itself gives directions from the city centre via the White or Green bridges; here, the suggestion is to arrive via the White Bridge after Gediminas Avenue. In the modernist building, the collection presents Lithuanian art of the 20th and 21st centuries, including sculpture, drawing, photography, installations and video.
Admission is normally charged, with free entry advertised on the last Sunday of each month. The gallery closes on Mondays and public holidays and has different opening hours on Thursdays and Sundays. If you want to pay for just one art museum, compare the content of this visit with MO and choose whichever sparks more curiosity. The Neris crossing can remain in your itinerary even if you do not enter the gallery.
For trips between 9 October 2026 and 17 January 2027, the institution's programme lists the exhibition “vladas švipas: pušalotas > bauhaus > kaunas > new york”, about the architect's career and work. It is an additional reason to choose the gallery if architecture and the Bauhaus are among your interests.
A return to the square for Christmas 2026 visitors
If your four days fall during the Christmas season, it is worth returning to Cathedral Square after the first day's outing. The official Vilnius Events calendar lists the tree lighting for 28 November 2026 at 19:00, with the time subject to change, and the Christmas market from 28 November to 27 December 2026. The reason to include this return visit is to enjoy the programme in the same place you have already explored during the day.
The full programme was scheduled for release on 12 November 2026, so reconfirm the activities before planning your evening. The free admission listed for the event does not mean that food, drinks or all activities are free. The Cathedral photograph used in this article is an archive image without Christmas decorations and does not show this edition of the event.
Turn your choices into a budget and checklist
To keep spending under control, start with the choices that affect the total: your accommodation address, airport transport and the admission tickets you actually want to use. This itinerary already brings together free visits; the tower, MO and the National Gallery can be included according to your interests. The funicular and Gediminas Tower have separate charges, so decide on each according to the experience it adds to your day.
In the Calculadora de Custo do Viajandar, organise the amounts you research for accommodation, meals, transport and admission tickets in Brazilian reais. Use the editable fields for an illustrative estimate: the tool's reference amounts do not represent Lithuanian prices, and it does not provide exchange-rate quotes.
After arranging your visits around opening days, use Mala Inteligente to turn the plan into a checklist. Consider the days spent walking, the church and museum visits, and the weather forecast close to departure. That way, what you pack reflects the itinerary you have chosen.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| The Cathedral, Gediminas Hill and Bernardinų Garden | You want to start with the city's main landmarks without buying a ticket for every stop. | Entry to the Cathedral, daytime visits to the hill and admission to the garden are free; the tower, funicular, bell tower and catacombs are not included in this free access. |
| Admission to Gediminas Tower | You are interested in the castle's history and want to add exhibitions to your hill visit. | This is a separate expense from going up the hill. If you only want to walk around this area, an outdoor visit already fits the itinerary. |
| Money Museum | You are looking for an indoor cultural visit with no admission fee. | The content includes monetary history and interactive features; the published opening schedule for October to June runs from Tuesday to Saturday. |
| MO Museum | You enjoy modern and contemporary Lithuanian art and are also interested in architecture. | It charges admission and closes on Tuesdays. Daniel Libeskind's building and the sculpture garden help combine the visit with the southern part of the Old Town. |
| National Gallery of Art | You want to cross the Neris and discover Lithuanian art of the 20th and 21st centuries. | Admission is normally charged, with free entry advertised on the last Sunday of the month. It closes on Mondays and public holidays. |
| Choosing between MO and the National Gallery | You prefer to focus your spending on just one art museum. | MO fits the Gate of Dawn route; the National Gallery works well with Gediminas Avenue and the river crossing. The current exhibition may settle the choice for you. |
Your itinerary, ready to save
Day 1 — The Cathedral, Gediminas and Pilies
Start in Cathedral Square and enter the church, respecting religious services. Continue to Gediminas Hill via the Trispalvė access route; visit the tower if its historical content interests you. Walk down for lunch at Etno Dvaras at Pilies g. 16 and continue along Pilies Street, without scheduling another compulsory paid visit.
Prefer an alternative? If you do not want to pay for the tower, just visit the hill during the day and add a walk through Bernardinų Garden after lunch at Etno Dvaras.Day 2 — Bernardinų Garden, St Anne's and Užupis
Stroll through Bernardinų Garden and continue to the façade of St Anne's, at Maironio g. 8. Cross to Užupis, look for the mermaid beside the bridge and the Angel of Užupis, and stop at the Constitution plaques at Paupio g. 4. End the route at Paupys Market, at Aukštaičių g. 7, to choose a meal from the different cuisines available.
Prefer an alternative? If seeing the interior of St Anne's is a priority from Tuesday to Friday, leave entry until the published opening period beginning at 16:30: visit Bernardinų Garden and Užupis and have lunch in Paupys before returning to the church.Day 3 — The Gate of Dawn and MO
Start at the Gate of Dawn, at Aušros Vartų g. 14, and visit the chapel when access permits. Walk along Aušros Vartų Street towards the Town Hall. Choose between lunch at Etno Dvaras at number 2 and continuing to MO Bistro. Devote the afternoon to MO Museum, at Pylimo g. 17, and the sculpture garden.
Prefer an alternative? If you choose the National Gallery as your only paid art museum, keep the Gate of Dawn, the walk to the Town Hall and MO's sculpture garden. On a rainy Tuesday, follow the Money Museum route and leave MO for another day.Day 4 — The Money Museum, Gediminas Avenue and the Neris
On a day between Tuesday and Saturday, visit the Money Museum at Totorių g. 2/8. Then walk along part of Gediminas Avenue. The Etno Dvaras branch at Vilniaus g. 18 is a suggested stop before continuing to the White Bridge, crossing the Neris and reaching the National Gallery at Konstitucijos pr. 22.
Prefer an alternative? To spend less on admission, stick to the Money Museum, the walk along Gediminas Avenue and the White Bridge crossing. If the National Gallery is your priority, schedule the visit for a day when it is open, even if that means rearranging the four days. Before you go
- Allow four full days of sightseeing; arrival and departure are outside the scope of this itinerary.
- Schedule the Money Museum between Tuesday and Saturday. For October to June, the published hours are Tuesday to Friday, 09:00–18:00, and Saturday, 10:00–17:00; check for changes and public holidays.
- Avoid scheduling MO for a Tuesday. The museum also lists closures on 24 and 25 December.
- The National Gallery closes on Mondays and public holidays, has different hours on Thursdays and Sundays, and advertises free admission on the last Sunday of the month. Confirm the conditions for your chosen date.
- To enter St Anne's, check the opening period for your day: the supplied information lists Tuesday to Friday, 16:30–19:00; Saturday, 10:30–19:00; and Sunday, 09:00–17:00.
- The National Museum states that the walking route up Gediminas Hill is not suitable for bicycles, wheelchairs or pushchairs. Check the funicular's operating conditions if you need to use it.
- Consult JUDU using your accommodation's exact address to choose your route, stop and payment method, including for night-time arrivals.
- Confirm the opening arrangements for your chosen Etno Dvaras branch, the businesses at Paupys Market or MO Bistro; a dish featured in a restaurant's presentation is not guaranteed to be available on the day.
- If travelling during the Christmas season, reconfirm the 2026 programme. The announced time for the tree lighting on 28 November is subject to change.
- Build your budget using amounts researched for your trip. The calculator organises editable estimates in Brazilian reais; it does not provide exchange-rate quotes or Lithuanian reference prices.
Questions to help you decide
Can I follow this four-day itinerary without a car?
The idea is to walk between nearby areas and use public transport according to your accommodation and route. JUDU lists bus connections between the airport, city centre and station. This makes it possible to organise this itinerary without hiring a car.
Which admission tickets should I prioritise?
There is no reason to buy them all in advance just to complete a list. Gediminas Tower makes sense for its historical content; MO and the National Gallery cater to an interest in art. First choose what you want to see, then check the current visiting conditions.
Which places have confirmed free admission?
The sources list free admission to the Cathedral, Gediminas Hill during the day, Bernardinų Garden, St Anne's, the Gate of Dawn and the Money Museum. Each place has its own access conditions; this list does not automatically include associated attractions.
Where should I look for accommodation?
Suggested locations are the Old Town near Pilies, or the stretch between Vilniaus and Gediminas Avenue. Compare the exact address with the sights and transport stops. These choices help with logistics but do not guarantee a lower nightly rate.
How can I adapt the itinerary if it rains?
Between Tuesday and Saturday, the Money Museum offers a free indoor alternative. MO, except on Tuesdays and during special closures, and the National Gallery, except on Mondays and public holidays, are alternatives with admission fees. Paupys Market lets you combine a meal with an indoor break.
Do these four days include flights and arrival transfers?
No. These are four days available for sightseeing within a longer trip around Europe, with arrival and departure excluded from the count. The itinerary focuses on Vilnius and does not aim to cover all of Lithuania.
