Sabará in two days: churches and the 2026 Jabuticaba Festival
Spend two days in Sabará during the 2026 Jabuticaba Festival, exploring churches and historic streets, with food stops and fewer extra journeys.

GETTING STARTED
On 21 and 22 November 2026, combine the Jabuticaba Festival with Carmo, Mercês, Rua Dom Pedro II, Rosário and Kaquende. Set aside the second morning for Igreja do Ó and Matriz da Conceição, with food breaks at the festival or an optional lunch at Xico da Fazenda.
Who it is for: Travellers who want to combine heritage sights and the Jabuticaba Festival over two full days in Sabará, grouping their visits together and keeping transport and food costs under control. Two days exploring Sabará's heritage and flavours
In Sabará, you can combine a morning visiting churches, a walk past historic buildings and an evening devoted to jabuticaba. To do this with less backtracking, focus the first day on the historic centre: Carmo, Mercês, Rua Dom Pedro II, Rosário and Kaquende. The following morning, visit Igreja do Ó and Matriz da Conceição together, leaving the rest of the day for the festival.
The suggested dates are 21 and 22 November 2026, during the 40th Jabuticaba Festival. These are two full days of sightseeing within the municipality; long-distance arrival and departure journeys are not included. This itinerary suits a regional getaway or a stop on a longer trip through Minas Gerais, with time for both heritage sights and leisurely meals.
To keep spending under control, compare accommodation and transport costs together, group trips outside the centre and separate your meal budget from the money set aside for festival purchases. That way, you decide where you want to spend before getting carried away at the fair.
Jabuticaba Festival 2026: when to go and what to enjoy
Asprodejas confirms that the Jabuticaba Festival will take place from 19 to 22 November 2026 in Sabará's historic centre. The fair selling products made from jabuticaba deserves its own time in the itinerary: browse the offerings, learn about goods made with the fruit and choose what you would like to taste or take home.
The organiser also announces live cooking demonstrations and cultural performances. When checked on 31 October 2026, the full programme had yet to be released. Set aside the evening of the 21st and part of the afternoon of the 22nd for these activities, and check the published times before travelling. On Sunday, remember that the festival finishes earlier.
- 19, 20 and 21 November 2026: 09:00–22:00.
- 22 November 2026: 09:00–20:00.
- Admission is free; food and purchases are paid for separately.
Where to stay to enjoy more and travel less
Look for accommodation in the historic centre, using Rua Dom Pedro II, Praça Santa Rita and Praça Melo Viana as reference points when comparing locations. Staying near this route makes it easier to head out on foot, return for a rest and enjoy the festival in the evening. Check the exact address before booking, especially if you intend to do most of your sightseeing on foot.
Add the nightly rate to your expected transport costs. Staying further away may be worthwhile, but include journeys to and from the centre in that comparison. Even with a central base, plan transport to Igreja do Ó and Matriz da Conceição; lunch at Xico da Fazenda adds another trip only if you choose that option.
If arriving by bus, confirm the route, boarding point, departure times and last return service with the operator. Viação Cuiabá lists (31) 3672-1255 as its contact number. Its page mentions routes 4988 and 4987 as ways to reach the company's own premises, without a timetable or fares; check which route serves your starting point and accommodation.
First morning: Carmo and Mercês
Start the morning of the 21st at Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, on Rua do Carmo, with no street number. Look at the façade and elaborate entrance before going inside. Instituto Estrada Real highlights works by Aleijadinho, including the atlantes, or supporting male figures, as well as the choir loft and rosewood screen. To see the interior, check opening arrangements and whether an admission fee applies before visiting.
Then continue to Igreja das Mercês, on Rua das Mercês. The Minas Gerais tourism listing gives access via Rua do Carmo, heading uphill after the Câmara Municipal building. The simpler decoration makes an interesting comparison with Carmo and allows you to continue sightseeing without paying for another journey.
The state listing states that visits to Mercês are self-guided and admission is free, but it does not confirm opening hours. If the church is closed, look at the exterior and continue to Praça Santa Rita. From there, head to the Jabuticaba Festival for a food break before walking along Rua Dom Pedro II.

After lunch: historic buildings, Teatro Municipal and Rosário
After eating at the festival, walk along Rua Dom Pedro II towards Praça Melo Viana. Take in the historic buildings highlighted by Instituto Estrada Real, and stop outside Teatro Municipal on the same street. Opened in 1819, the theatre features in this route as an exterior stop; if you would like to see inside, check whether visits are possible before continuing to Rosário.
In Praça Melo Viana, the unfinished structure of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário changes the scenery along the route. According to Instituto Estrada Real, its construction is linked to the Irmandade dos Homens Pretos da Barra do Sabará, a brotherhood of Black men, and work began in 1768. Look at the stone walls and portal before continuing to Chafariz do Kaquende.
If you were also considering Museu do Ouro, check the visitor address and opening arrangements directly with the museum: Ibram announces refurbishment and a move to temporary premises. For now, set aside this afternoon for Rua Dom Pedro II, Rosário and Kaquende, which form the suggested sequence.

Kaquende before returning to the festival
From Praça Melo Viana, continue to Chafariz do Kaquende, on Rua Caquende, with no street number. Instituto Estrada Real describes the monument as a stone structure dating from 1757. After the churches and theatre, this stop brings the history of the city's water supply into the itinerary. Take a look at the fountain, then return to the festival to eat and enjoy the evening.
Bring water for the walk: legends about drinking from the fountain do not establish that its water is safe to drink. If you would prefer a shorter afternoon, return to the festival after Rosário and leave Kaquende for the 22nd, before your final visit to the fair.

Kaquende rounds off the first day's heritage walk; afterwards, the itinerary returns to the flavours of the festival.

Food breaks and choosing products made from the fruit
Use the Jabuticaba Festival for food breaks without leaving the central sightseeing route. The fair of jabuticaba products announced by Asprodejas offers a chance to connect your visit with local production. Walk around before ordering, see what is being served and compare the displayed prices to choose something that suits your appetite and budget.
Keep your meal budget separate from your spending limit for products to take home. Admission is free, but tasting and shopping have their own costs. On the 21st, take a break before Rua Dom Pedro II and return in the evening after Kaquende. On the 22nd, eating there after visiting the churches leaves the afternoon free for the fair and cultural programme.
If you would prefer to book lunch outside the centre, Xico da Fazenda is the alternative in this itinerary. Its setting beside the lake offers a change of pace, but transport and dining arrangements need to be made in advance.
Second morning: the interiors of Ó and Matriz
On the morning of the 22nd, combine Igreja Nossa Senhora do Ó and Matriz da Conceição in a single trip away from the central sightseeing route. Start in the square outside Igreja do Ó, an 18th-century church with a central tower. Instituto Estrada Real highlights its interior decoration in blue, red and gold: allow time to look at the details, having checked opening arrangements and any admission fee before setting out.
Continue to Matriz da Conceição, in Praça Getúlio Vargas. Its Baroque decoration, also highlighted by Instituto Estrada Real, is the reason to combine the two churches in the same morning. If Ó is closed, look at its exterior and continue to Matriz, provided that visitor access has been confirmed.
Afterwards, return to the Jabuticaba Festival for lunch and the afternoon, or continue to Xico da Fazenda if you have confirmed that the restaurant can accommodate you. The photographs in this article are archive images; use them to get to know the places, remembering that current opening arrangements and visiting conditions need to be confirmed.

Xico da Fazenda: lunch beside the lake
For a break outside the centre, consider Xico da Fazenda at Fazenda Arraial Velho, Rua Paracatu, 588, in Arraial Velho. The farm's own website describes the restaurant as being beside the lake and states that there are covered areas. This setting is the reason to choose lunch here, especially if you already have transport and want a slight change of pace after the churches.
Fit this trip in after Igreja do Ó and Matriz, having confirmed that the restaurant can accommodate you through its booking channel or by calling (31) 99623-6289. Check the menu and prices before setting out as well. Weigh the transport cost and time set aside for lunch against the afternoon you want to spend at the festival: to stay on the central route, return to the jabuticaba products fair.
Plan your budget and turn your trip into a checklist
In Viajandar's Calculadora de Viagem, enter your destination, number of days, number of people and travel style to get an initial estimate in Brazilian reais. Compare the result with the accommodation rates and transport costs you research for your dates. Include extra nights if you arrive the day before or leave after the two days of sightseeing. The reference amounts are illustrative, not a quote for the festival.
Then turn your trip into a checklist in Mala Inteligente: set the duration, climate and traveller profiles, and review comfortable footwear, rain protection and personal items. Check the forecast close to departure to adjust your packing for the days of your visit.
To continue your research, Viajandar's Sabará page brings together attractions and food and accommodation directories. Use the listings to explore the city's places and services, and confirm availability with those you choose.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation in the historic centre | This suits travellers who want to alternate between churches, rest and the festival over the two days. | This puts your accommodation closer to the central sights. Compare the nightly rate with the total cost of staying further away and paying for transport. |
| Walks through the centre and food breaks at the festival | This suits travellers who intend to devote more time to the central heritage sights and the jabuticaba products fair. | This reduces extra journeys for food, but meals and purchases still cost money despite free admission. |
| Visit both churches together on the second morning | This suits travellers who particularly want to see the decoration in Igreja do Ó and Matriz da Conceição. | This groups together journeys outside the central route; confirm visitor access before organising transport. |
| Xico da Fazenda, in Arraial Velho | This suits travellers who have transport and want to eat lunch beside the lake, outside the centre. | This adds a journey and takes up some of the time set aside for the festival. Confirm dining availability, the menu and prices beforehand. |

Questions to help you decide
When is Sabará's Jabuticaba Festival in 2026?
Asprodejas confirms that the 40th edition will take place from 19 to 22 November 2026 in the historic centre. The announced opening hours are 09:00–22:00 on the 19th, 20th and 21st, and 09:00–20:00 on the 22nd. This itinerary suggests visiting on the 21st and 22nd.
Are the festival and churches free to enter?
Admission to the festival is free, according to the organiser; food and purchases are paid for separately. The state tourism listing states that admission to Igreja das Mercês is free, subject to the church being open. For Carmo, Rosário, Igreja do Ó and Matriz da Conceição, check visitor access and whether an admission fee applies.
Do I need a car for the two days?
The central route links Carmo, Mercês, Rua Dom Pedro II, Rosário and Kaquende on foot. For Igreja do Ó and Matriz da Conceição, plan the journeys together. The optional lunch at Xico da Fazenda requires another trip. If arriving by bus, confirm boarding arrangements and the last return service before travelling.
Which area should I look in for accommodation?
Look in the historic centre, using Rua Dom Pedro II, Praça Santa Rita and Praça Melo Viana as reference points when comparing addresses. Add accommodation and transport costs together: staying near the sights may make the itinerary easier, but it does not guarantee the lowest cost.
Can I include Museu do Ouro?
Ibram announces building work and a move to temporary premises. Before including Museu do Ouro, confirm the visitor address and opening arrangements directly with the museum. The proposed route already fills the afternoon with Rua Dom Pedro II, Rosário and Kaquende.
Do the two days include arrival and departure?
These are two full days of sightseeing within the municipality, devoted to heritage and the festival. Long-distance arrival and departure journeys are not included. If travel takes up part of those days, shorten the walk by leaving Kaquende for another occasion or skip lunch in Arraial Velho.
