Brazil · São Sebastião, São Paulo — historic centre and South Coast beaches

Six days in São Sebastião: is it worth splitting your stay between the centre and Boiçucanga?

Plan six full days between São Sebastião's historic centre and Boiçucanga, with beaches, food, Atlantic Forest and an exhibition in November 2026.

GETTING STARTED

Spend two days exploring the historic centre and Guaecá, followed by four on the South Coast: see how to split your stay, fit in Maresias, Camburi, Camburizinho, Juquehy and Ribeirão de Itu, and visit an exhibition in November 2026.

Who it is for: Couples, families and friends who want to combine beaches, culture, Atlantic Forest and relaxation over six full days, excluding arrival and departure days.

Two bases for exploring the centre and the South Coast

Yes, splitting your stay is worthwhile — especially if you want to explore the centre's historic buildings and still have full days for the South Coast beaches. Start with two days of outings focused on historic heritage and Guaecá, then move your bags to Boiçucanga. The change makes room for different experiences without having to set off from the central area every morning.

Boiçucanga lies between Maresias and Camburi/Camburizinho and has shops, restaurants and accommodation, according to the Tourism Department. The municipal website puts it approximately 36 kilometres from the historic centre. That distance helps explain the advantage of changing bases; allow extra time on the road when planning your day.

This itinerary covers six full days of outings, excluding arrival and departure. It offers a selection of experiences that reveal different sides of São Sebastião, with beaches, culture and relaxation. A car or transfer service makes the combination easier. If packing up midway through the trip feels like a hassle, stay only in Boiçucanga and set aside one day to visit the centre.

  • First base: the historic centre, for cultural outings and the day in Guaecá.
  • Second base: Boiçucanga, for visits to Maresias, Camburi, Camburizinho, Juquehy and Ribeirão de Itu.
  • Example booking arrangement: arrive the day before the itinerary begins, spend three nights in the centre, move on the third day of outings and spend four nights in Boiçucanga.

Where to stay for easier outings

Choose your accommodation with the outing that starts at your doorstep in mind. In the centre, you can prioritise walks among the historic buildings and an easy return from Rua da Praia. In Boiçucanga, look for a location that makes trips to other beaches easy, while also suiting those moments when all you want is a meal and some rest close to your room.

The municipal website lists guesthouses, houses, chalets and other accommodation types in different areas. Compare what each property offers your group: space to spend time together, ease of getting out and about, and a comfortable place to rest between outings. Before booking, confirm the address, services, rate and booking terms directly with the property.

Viajandar's São Sebastião page brings together directories of accommodation, dining and services and can help with this initial search. As a listing does not confirm that a business is currently operating, contact the establishment before relying on it during your trip.

  • In the centre, look for an address that makes it easy to walk around the historic quarter and Rua da Praia.
  • In Boiçucanga, assess the location in relation to the beach, services and transport you intend to use.
  • Check parking if needed, and arrange luggage storage without relying on early access to your room.

Day 1: historic buildings, local heritage and Rua da Praia

Start with the seven historic blocks identified by the Tourism Department. Walk among the historic buildings, admire the Igreja Matriz and stop by Casa Esperança and Capela de São Gonçalo, which houses the Museu de Arte Sacra. Their proximity lets you devote the first day to local heritage without heading off in search of another beach.

Casa Caiçara also appears on the municipal list and can add to your outing. Check opening hours for indoor visits before setting out, so you can plan your visits and leave walks through the streets for the gaps between them.

If your trip takes place on or before 25 November 2026, include the Sob o Manto de Maria exhibition at Casa Severino Ferraz on a day when it is open. The exhibition brings together religious mantles and local religious heritage, adding an indoor visit to the route. Dates and opening hours are detailed in the events section.

Finish on Rua da Praia, the recreational waterfront beside the historic centre. The promenade and views of the channel invite you to extend your outing without another car journey. Come for a walk and a break; save sea bathing for your beach days.

Day 2: give yourself time to linger in Guaecá

After a day of culture, head to Guaecá for a change of pace. The bay lies beyond Barequeçaba when travelling from the centre along the South Coast and has more than two kilometres of sand, with Atlantic Forest hills in the landscape. Walk along part of the beach and choose where to settle: this is the day to let the beach take up much of your time.

The Tourism Department describes commercial facilities as limited. Bring water and plan your food before setting out, without relying on seasonal beach kiosks. Check local conditions before entering the water and keep your walk to the sandy beach.

Want to return earlier? Combine a walk in Guaecá with a visit to the Museu de Arte Sacra in Capela de São Gonçalo, if visiting hours have been confirmed. This lets you make the most of your last afternoon at your central base and leave the move until the following morning.

Day 3: Maresias beach and a fish lunch

The third day begins with the move to Boiçucanga. Arrange to drop off your bags at your new accommodation, then head to Maresias. You will be backtracking along the road, but you can enjoy the outing with your luggage taken care of. Adjust your time at the beach to whatever remains after the move.

Maresias has a long stretch of sand and a surfing tradition, according to the municipal website. After enjoying the beach, stop by Praça do Surf and Beco da Mulher Maravilha, which the source places at Entrance 8. These two stops help you get to know a little more of the neighbourhood before returning to your base.

For lunch, consider Badauê Maresias at Avenida Francisco Loup, 901, the address listed on the group's official website. The branch's digital menu, marked as updated on 9 April 2026, includes fish and seafood. One option is Peixe Caiçara, served with rice, beans, potatoes and banana. It is a useful option for anyone wanting to include a fish meal in the outing; confirm opening arrangements and the dish's availability before going.

If the move takes up much of the day, enjoy Boiçucanga's waterfront and rest at your new accommodation. In that case, visit Maresias on the fifth day instead of Juquehy, allowing time for the beach, a meal and a walk around the neighbourhood.

Day 4: Camburizinho and Camburi via the road and bridge

On the fourth day, combine Camburizinho and Camburi. The former is a small bay; the latter has approximately 900 metres of beach and a surfing scene, according to the Tourism Department. These are two neighbouring landscapes to explore without spreading your day across distant neighbourhoods.

Start in Camburizinho, walk along the sand and continue to Camburi via the road and bridge. The river separates the beaches, and the connection between them on this outing is overland. The municipal pages also mention shops around both beaches.

After walking along both beaches, spend more time at whichever suits your group, then return to Boiçucanga to rest. If you would prefer to spend the whole day in one place, focus your visit on Camburizinho: the bay alone offers enough for a day of walking and relaxing on the sand.

Day 5: Juquehy for walking, eating and lingering

Juquehy gets a day of its own. The municipal website describes around 3.5 kilometres of beach, shops, restaurants and the mouth of the Rio Juquehy. You can walk along just part of the sand and spend the rest of the day in the neighbourhood, with time for a meal and another break near the sea.

For a meal without leaving Juquehy, consider the Badauê branch at Avenida Mãe Bernarda, 2001, listed on the group's official contact page. Its location lets you fit a meal into the outing; confirm that it will be serving and check this branch's menu before deciding what to order.

Afterwards, return to Boiçucanga without adding a trip to the centre. If you stayed at your base during the move on the third day, use this day for Maresias, including Praça do Surf and Beco da Mulher Maravilha. Juquehy can wait for another trip without cutting into the rest time on your other days.

Day 6: Ribeirão de Itu and late afternoon in Boiçucanga

The sixth day can bring you closer to the Atlantic Forest on the Cachoeira do Ribeirão de Itu trail. The state guide to Parque Estadual Serra do Mar lists the route in its Núcleo São Sebastião sector and states that advance booking is required. Arrange your visit by calling (12) 3863-1707 or emailing [email protected].

When booking, confirm access, the route, arrangements for accompaniment and the meeting point. The sector's headquarters are in Juquehy, but should not be assumed to be the trailhead. Once these details are settled, set aside the other part of the day for relaxing in Boiçucanga.

In the late afternoon, walk along the waterfront. The bay faces west, according to the Tourism Department, giving you a good reason to linger and watch the changing light, weather permitting.

Without a trail booking, spend the day between Boiçucanga beach, the local shops and a break at your accommodation, finishing on the waterfront. The beach is classified as having a steep drop-off: check conditions before entering the sea. The neighbourhood was chosen as a base for its location and services.

An exhibition to fit into November 2026

For anyone travelling in November 2026, Casa Severino Ferraz offers a visit that fits well into the historic centre day. The exhibition Sob o Manto de Maria: fé, devoção e memória de Nossa Senhora das Dores, whose title means “Under Mary's Mantle: Faith, Devotion and the Memory of Our Lady of Sorrows”, brings together religious mantles and explores local religious heritage. It is worth stepping inside to add context to your exploration of the city's heritage.

According to Fundass, the exhibition runs from 25 October to 25 November 2026, with free admission. Published opening hours are Tuesday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm, and Saturday, 2 pm to 8 pm. Adjust the order of the first two days to fit in the visit, and confirm opening arrangements on public holidays.

The events research carried out on 31 October 2026 included Fundass's annual calendar and the exhibition announcement. Closer to your trip, check the foundation's updates for other activities that might fit your time in the centre or Boiçucanga.

Getting around while keeping time for rest

A car or transfer service makes this combination of bases and beaches easier, especially on moving day. If booking a transfer, agree on the routes and luggage arrangements, and organise transport for the following days' outings too. Leave extra time between travelling and any activity with a fixed start time.

For those arriving via Vale do Paraíba, the road operator confirms the São José dos Campos–Caraguatatuba connection via Tamoios and the Caraguatatuba and São Sebastião bypasses. There is Free Flow electronic tolling in Caraguatatuba; before setting out, check the current guidance for your vehicle and route.

If travelling by bus, consult SOU Transportes' São Sebastião page and the timetables in the app indicated by the operator. Check routes before choosing accommodation and focus each day on one neighbourhood. On the third day, move to Boiçucanga and enjoy the waterfront; on the fifth, visit Maresias instead of Juquehy.

Camburi and Camburizinho can still be combined on the fourth day, walking between them via the road and bridge. Check transport between Boiçucanga and the starting point of your outing, including the return journey.

Use the itinerary to plan your packing and budget

Once you have chosen your bases, open Mala Inteligente and select hot weather/beach, the traveller profiles and the full trip duration, including arrival and departure. Review the checklist for your days on the sand and, if booked, the Ribeirão de Itu walk. Check the forecast shortly before departure to make any final adjustments.

In Calculadora de Viagem, enter the destination, number of people, days and travel style to compare estimates in Brazilian reais. The tool uses reference costs for accommodation, food and transport, with a 15% margin. Try different trip lengths and travel styles; the result is an illustrative estimate, not a quote.

To decide whether two bases fit your budget, compare actual accommodation prices with the alternative of staying only in Boiçucanga. Check car, transfer and outing costs separately, and include arrival and departure expenses. The example in this itinerary allows seven nights and six full days to enjoy São Sebastião.

Before you go

  • Keep arrival and departure separate from the six days of outings. In the seven-night example, there are three nights in the centre and four in Boiçucanga.
  • Before booking, check parking or access to your chosen transport and arrange luggage storage on moving day.
  • Confirm opening hours for visits inside Igreja Matriz, Casa Esperança, Casa Caiçara and Museu de Arte Sacra.
  • To visit Sob o Manto de Maria, plan to go on or before 25 November 2026, on the days and at the times published by Fundass. Confirm opening arrangements on public holidays.
  • Check Fundass's updates closer to your trip; the events selected for this itinerary do not cover the municipality's entire programme.
  • Book Ribeirão de Itu by calling (12) 3863-1707 or emailing [email protected]. Confirm the route, arrangements for accompaniment and the meeting point.
  • Confirm that the Badauê branches will be serving before planning your meals there. The Maresias menu does not guarantee dish availability and does not automatically apply to Juquehy.
  • Bring water and plan your food for Guaecá. Use the road and bridge to travel between Camburizinho and Camburi.
  • Check local conditions before entering the water, especially in Boiçucanga, which is described as a beach with a steep drop-off. The photographs are archive images.
  • If using buses, check routes and timetables with SOU Transportes before booking. If arriving via Tamoios, check the current Free Flow guidance for Caraguatatuba.
  • Include arrival and departure in your Mala Inteligente checklist and spending estimate. Check actual accommodation, car, transfer and outing costs separately.

Questions to help you decide

Is changing accommodation worthwhile on a six-day trip?

Yes, if you want to explore the centre at a relaxed pace and visit several South Coast beaches. Devote the first two days to historic heritage and Guaecá, move to Boiçucanga on the third day and set out from there for the remaining outings. If changing rooms disrupts your rest, a single base in Boiçucanga also works, with a return trip to the centre.

How many nights does this split involve?

Arrival and departure are separate from the six full days. Arriving the day before the first outing and leaving the morning after the sixth gives a total of seven nights in this example: three in the centre and four in Boiçucanga. This is a suggested timeframe for combining culture and beaches, not a required length of stay for seeing the entire municipality.

Can the itinerary be adapted for bus travel?

SOU Transportes maintains a São Sebastião page and states that its app provides timetables. Check routes before choosing your accommodation. To keep things simple, stay in Boiçucanga on moving day and visit Maresias on the fifth day instead of Juquehy.

Is Boiçucanga recommended as a base because its sea is calm?

The choice is based on its location and concentration of services. The municipal website classifies the beach as having a steep drop-off. If sea bathing is your family's priority, take this characteristic into account and check local conditions before entering the water.

Can I turn up at the Ribeirão de Itu trail without arranging a visit?

The state guide states that advance booking is required. Confirm access, the route, the meeting point and arrangements for accompaniment with Núcleo São Sebastião. Without an arranged visit, set aside the sixth day for walks along Boiçucanga's beach and waterfront.

Which November 2026 event can be included in the outing?

Fundass lists the Sob o Manto de Maria exhibition at Casa Severino Ferraz as running from 25 October to 25 November 2026. Admission is free, with visits Tuesday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm, and Saturday, 2 pm to 8 pm. Confirm opening arrangements on public holidays and check with Fundass closer to your trip for other activities.
