GETTING STARTED

Set aside one day for Fonte Judith, Feirinha do Alto and Lago Comary; another for an easy walk in PARNASO and Soberbo; and the third for the parish church and Empório da Roça. Arrange the order around the market and restaurant opening days and the events calendar, with arrival and departure outside these three days.

Who it is for: Couples, families and travellers who want to combine easy walks, heritage, crafts and home-style food with time to rest.

Three days with a proper break between outings

You can combine mountains, crafts and home-style food in Teresópolis without turning three days into a race. My suggestion is to dedicate one day to Alto and Lago Comary, another to the Teresópolis headquarters of Serra dos Órgãos National Park, known as PARNASO, and the third to Matriz de Santa Teresa and a countryside lunch. That way, each outing has a focus, with time left to sit down, eat and return early.

These are three full days of sightseeing, with arrival and departure counted separately. This itinerary brings together the town and short walks; the mountain traverse is best left for a trip planned differently. The order is flexible: schedule the Feirinha for a day when it operates and the countryside lunch between Wednesday and Sunday.

Alto or Várzea: choose your base to suit your itinerary

When choosing where to stay, think about the start and end of each day. Alto is convenient for the Fonte Judith, Feirinha and Comary circuit. Várzea, in the central area, suits those who prefer to be close to heritage sites and the bus station. These are suggested bases based on how they fit the itinerary; check the accommodation's exact address before booking, because the neighbourhood name alone does not tell you how easy it will be to get around.

Travellers coming from Rio can take the Viação Teresópolis service between Rodoviária Novo Rio and the Teresópolis bus terminal via the BR-116. The operator lists the terminal's address as Rua Valdir Barbosa Moreira, 170, in Centro. After arriving, arrange your journeys between Centro, Alto, the park and Prata dos Aredes without relying on any particular local bus route that has not been checked.

Viajandar's Teresópolis page has links to accommodation, dining and sightseeing directories. Use them to start narrowing down your choices, then confirm the details directly with your chosen provider: the page itself warns that listings may be out of date.

Fonte Judith and the Feirinha: a morning to browse at leisure

Begin the Alto circuit with a stop outside Fonte Judith. The state government's tourism document describes its colonial architecture, Portuguese tiles and five water spouts shaped like fauns. The appeal here is seeing these features up close; the historical source does not establish the fountain's current condition or whether it is operating.

Continue to Feirinha do Alto, in Praça Higino da Silveira, and allow time to browse the work of artists and craftspeople. According to the State Tourism Department, the market takes place on Saturdays, Sundays and long holiday weekends. It is therefore worth changing the order of your days to visit while it is open.

Between the market and Comary, take a proper break to eat and sit down. If you want to bring a snack, it will help keep the day flexible without depending on a particular establishment. On days when the Feirinha is not running, simply combine Fonte Judith and Lago Comary and enjoy a shorter afternoon outing.

Slow down at Lago Comary

After browsing the crafts, Lago Comary changes the pace of the outing. It is among the places ICMBio recommends visiting in Teresópolis and, in this suggested sequence, works well as a stop to enjoy the scenery before returning to your accommodation.

Plan your visit around the lake, checking access conditions close to your trip. References to Granja Comary in the sources do not guarantee entry to the CBF facilities or the presence of the national team at training. The outing has its own purpose: making time for the mountain scenery after a morning in town.

Do not add the park to this afternoon just because it is also on the itinerary. Leave the walks for the following day and keep time for rest. If access to the lake is restricted, spend longer at the Feirinha on days when it operates and finish the circuit in Alto.

PARNASO: choose a trail and leave time for a picnic

Dedicate the second day to PARNASO's Teresópolis headquarters. Start at the Visitor Centre, when available, to check what is open and choose your walk. To keep things easy, take Trilha Primavera; if your group wants a viewpoint and is willing to make more effort, choose Mozart Catão instead.

ICMBio's itinerary also combines a walk to Barragem do Rio Beija-Flor with a picnic. This is a good combination for those who prefer to bring their own food and spend more time in the park: walk, stop to eat in the permitted areas, and only then decide whether continuing to the dam fits your plans.

Trilha Suspensa is another viable option, but it should replace part of the programme. Check which sections are open and take the stairs into account before choosing it. ICMBio classifies Cartão Postal as moderate, so it is not included as a required easy walk in this itinerary.

  • Primavera is an easy walk of around 500 metres, according to ICMBio, and is the first choice for this itinerary.
  • Mozart Catão is an alternative of easy to moderate difficulty leading to Mirante Alexandre Oliveira.
  • Trilha Suspensa is described as a 1,300-metre route with elevated sections, but it also has stairs and access restrictions that need to be checked.

A stop at Soberbo before heading back

To finish your day in nature, allow time for a stop at Mirante do Soberbo, referred to by ICMBio as Mirante da Vista Soberba. Combining it with the park makes sense as a suggested itinerary, provided you arrange transport between the two places.

Let the day's visibility determine whether you make this stop. If the view is obscured, enjoy your break in the park and return to your accommodation earlier. There is no need to make up for skipping the viewpoint with another trail: the day will already include walking, forest and time outdoors.

Matriz de Santa Teresa: heritage in Centro

On the third day, begin at Matriz de Santa Teresa d’Ávila, in Praça Baltazar da Silveira. The Diocese of Petrópolis records the inauguration of the current church in 1940. This stop introduces you to a landmark in Centro and suits a short morning outing before heading to Prata dos Aredes for lunch.

There is also a recent change to look out for: the Diocese reported the completion of the parish church's restoration and expansion and the inauguration of the works at Praça Santa Teresa during the celebration on 15 October 2026. That celebration has already taken place; the visit now focuses on the heritage site following the works.

Check whether you can visit the interior and respect religious services. If the church is closed, keep the stop in the square and view the façade from outside. The archive photographs accompanying the text predate the works and do not show its current appearance.

Empório da Roça: a leisurely lunch that fills the afternoon

After the parish church, the suggestion is to leave Centro for a leisurely lunch at Empório da Roça, on Rua Norival de Oliveira Pacheco in Prata dos Aredes. The official page describes home-style food, an outdoor area, a small playground and a pet-friendly policy—features that help make the meal part of the outing.

The restaurant states that it opens from Wednesday to Sunday and that the final stretch of the approach is along a dirt road. Confirm that it will be serving on your chosen date and arrange the outward and return journeys before setting off. It is not a stop within walking distance of the church, and the journey deserves a place in both your schedule and your budget for the day.

Enjoy lunch without scheduling another commitment straight afterwards. If your visit to Centro falls on a Monday or Tuesday, swap the afternoons: visit Empório on another day between Wednesday and Sunday and leave Lago Comary for after the parish church. That way, you keep the outings without piling up activities.

On the right date, the events calendar may change the order of your days

For anyone in Teresópolis on 1 November 2026, the events calendar consulted on 31 October lists Cultura de Raiz, Feira do Rolo and Música na Matriz. The municipal programme was corroborated by ABIH-RJ, which attributes the information to the City Hall.

Música na Matriz is the suggested choice for combining a musical experience with the day dedicated to heritage. If this is your travel date, put the central circuit first and adjust the countryside lunch around the confirmed performance time. Cultura de Raiz and Feira do Rolo are other attractions announced for the same day; choose according to the schedule rather than trying to fit in all three.

Check venues and times before rearranging your outing. This confirmation applies to 1 November 2026 and does not mean you can assume the events will recur during another stay.

From planning your outings to packing and budgeting

Once you have chosen your outings, use Mala Inteligente to turn your days in town and on the trails into a checklist. Enter the duration, climate and traveller profiles, then adjust the list with walking footwear, rain protection and warm clothing according to the forecast close to your trip.

In Calculadora de Custos de Viagem, enter your destination, number of days, number of people and style of stay. The tool provides estimates in Brazilian reais for accommodation, food and transport, with a 15% margin. Also account for the nights needed for arrival and departure, and check whether transport to Empório da Roça fits your expected spending.

The results are illustrative guides, not quotes or bookings. Use them to compare how more conveniently located accommodation, more comfortable transport or a leisurely meal would affect your total budget.

Your itinerary, ready to save

Day 1 — morning in Alto

Begin with a stop outside Fonte Judith and continue to Feirinha do Alto, in Praça Higino da Silveira. Schedule this circuit for a Saturday, Sunday or long holiday weekend, following the calendar reported by the state source.

Prefer an alternative? If the Feirinha is not taking place on your date, visit Fonte Judith and bring Lago Comary forward, leaving the afternoon for rest.

Day 1 — afternoon at Comary

After a break to eat and sit down, head to Lago Comary to enjoy the scenery. The suggestion is to finish the outing there and keep the rest of the afternoon for rest.

Prefer an alternative? If access to Lago Comary is restricted, spend longer browsing the Feirinha on its operating days and return to your accommodation early.

Day 2 — morning in PARNASO

At the Teresópolis headquarters, begin at the Visitor Centre to check the day's conditions, then walk Trilha Primavera, described by ICMBio as easy and around 500 metres long.

Prefer an alternative? Replace Primavera with Mozart Catão if you want to reach Mirante Alexandre Oliveira and are willing to take a walk of easy to moderate difficulty.

Day 2 — lunch and early afternoon

Bring food for a picnic in the permitted areas and, if you want to keep walking, continue to Barragem do Rio Beija-Flor. This combination appears in ICMBio's itinerary for the headquarters.

Prefer an alternative? To explore Trilha Suspensa, replace the walk to the dam with the open sections of that route, taking the stairs into account.

Day 2 — finish at Soberbo

Stop at Mirante do Soberbo, referred to by ICMBio as Mirante da Vista Soberba, with transport arranged. Afterwards, return to your accommodation without adding another outing.

Prefer an alternative? If visibility is poor, skip the viewpoint and keep your picnic break in the park, subject to local conditions.

Day 3 — morning in Centro

Visit Matriz de Santa Teresa d’Ávila and its surroundings. Set aside a shorter morning for heritage, leaving time for the journey and the countryside meal.

Prefer an alternative? If the church is closed to visitors, stop outside in Praça Baltazar da Silveira and view the façade, respecting religious activities.

Day 3 — leisurely lunch and rest

With outward and return transport arranged, head to Empório da Roça, in Prata dos Aredes, for home-style food and time in the outdoor area. The restaurant states that it opens from Wednesday to Sunday and that the final approach is along a dirt road. Leave the rest of the afternoon free.

Prefer an alternative? If the third day falls on a Monday or Tuesday, move Empório da Roça to another day of your stay between Wednesday and Sunday, replacing the afternoon at Comary; move Lago Comary to the afternoon of your day in the centre.

Questions to help you decide

Are three days enough to explore Teresópolis?

This itinerary fills three full days of outings, with arrival and departure counted separately. It offers a selection of nature, crafts, heritage and food experiences; it does not include the mountain traverse or aim to cover everything in Teresópolis.

Can you make the trip without a car?

Yes. Viação Teresópolis confirms the service between Rodoviária Novo Rio and the Teresópolis bus station. Arrange local journeys separately, especially the lunch in Prata dos Aredes, with the return trip agreed in advance.

Which trail should you choose for a short walk?

Among the options described by ICMBio, Primavera is easy and around 500 metres long. Mozart Catão is easy to moderate. Trilha Suspensa includes stairs, and you need to check which sections are open; its name does not imply full accessibility.

Does Feirinha do Alto take place every day?

The state source reports that it operates on Saturdays, Sundays and long holiday weekends. Schedule the Alto circuit for one of those days. On another day of the week, keep Fonte Judith and Lago Comary in your plans without counting on the stalls.

Does the outing to Comary include visiting the Brazilian national team?

The suggested visit is to Lago Comary. The available evidence does not support promising entry to the CBF sports facilities or the opportunity to watch training sessions.

Is there a meal stop that suits families?

Empório da Roça reports having a small playground, an outdoor area and a pet-friendly policy. This helps you assess whether the meal suits your group, but it does not establish trail conditions or the accessibility of the other outings.
