GETTING STARTED

Choose a base and explore Ubatuba area by area: Centro and Itaguá, Tamar and Tenório, Praia Grande and Toninhas, then Itamambuca. This itinerary covers four full days, with arrival and departure separate, breaks for meals and alternatives for rain and different budgets.

Who it is for: Couples, families and first-time visitors who have four full days in Ubatuba and want to combine beaches, culture and food, choosing their accommodation and transport carefully.

Where to stay for this four-day itinerary

Four days in Ubatuba give you time to walk around Centro, see the turtles at Tamar and enjoy different beach landscapes without crossing the municipality for every outing. Here is how we will organise the trip: Centro and Itaguá on the first day, Tamar and Tenório on the second, Praia Grande and Toninhas on the third, and Itamambuca on the fourth. These are four full days, with arrival and departure separate—a selection for a first visit that leaves other stretches of the coast for another trip.

For this sequence, our suggested base is Itaguá. The Tourism Department highlights its restaurants, guesthouses, shops and services, a combination that makes meals and outings along Rua Guarani easy to arrange. Centro makes sense if you want services and the Iperoig waterfront nearby. Praia Grande suits those who prefer to devote more time to the beach and are happy to leave the neighbourhood to visit Centro and Itaguá.

Before booking, locate your accommodation on a map and compare the routes. In Praia Grande, check which side of the BR-101 you will be staying on: the highway separates the beach from the neighbourhood. To save money, consider the nightly rate and transport costs together; choosing a single base and avoiding trips back to your accommodation in the middle of outings also helps.

Arrival and transport: avoid spending on unnecessary return trips

If you are arriving by bus, check where you will get off before booking your accommodation. Pássaro Marron lists connections with São Paulo and São José dos Campos and stops such as Terminal Rodoviário de Ubatuba, Praia Grande and Toninhas. The stop served depends on the journey you choose; sorting this out at the start helps you avoid an extra transfer. Also compare the total ticket price, including any booking fees charged through the website or app.

For local bus travel, the municipal government recommends checking routes, stops and timetables on Moovit. Look up both the outward and return journeys between your accommodation and each outing, especially Itamambuca. Grouping your days by area reduces changes between transport services and lets you spend more time in each place.

If you are driving, include fuel, parking and the applicable Environmental Preservation Fee in the same calculation. According to the municipal government, the TPA uses electronic number plate recording at the entrances to the municipality without blocking traffic. Check the rules for your vehicle before travelling and take your meal breaks in the areas already included in the itinerary.

Day 1: Praça Anchieta and a walk along Iperoig

Start at Praça Anchieta and look for Sobradão do Porto at number 38. Built in 1846, the building is linked to trade during the coffee era, according to FundArt. Treat it as a brief stop to view the historic building from outside: it is undergoing renovation, so respect the construction barriers.

Then head to Avenida Iperoig and walk along the waterfront of the beach also known as Cruzeiro. The Tourism Department describes this stretch as a place to enjoy the view, with shops, a craft market and an events area nearby. This is a morning for looking out to sea and getting to know Centro; save swimming at the beach for the following days.

Continue towards Rua Guarani and Itaguá, choosing transport to suit the distance and your group's pace. Do not plan an indoor visit to Museu Histórico Washington de Oliveira: on 30 October 2026, FundArt reported that it was closed for renovation and restoration of its collection. To add an attraction to the day, choose the Aquário, which is already on your route along Rua Guarani.

Rua Guarani and Itaguá: a break for food and sea views

At Rua Guarani, 859, take a break at Aquabar, which is associated with Aquário de Ubatuba. The official page lists coffee, savoury snacks, cakes and juices, with service also available to people outside, beside the adjoining waterfront playground. You can stop for a snack without buying an aquarium ticket; check the day's options.

Head to the Itaguá waterfront and enjoy the combination of sea views, walking and restaurants described by the Tourism Department. Spend the afternoon along this stretch, allowing time to stroll and eat without adding a distant beach to the schedule.

To finish, our suggestion is Jundu Restaurante Lounge Bar, at Avenida Leovigildo Dias Vieira, 810. Grupo Jundu presents this location as serving caiçara cuisine, a good reason to include it after your walk. Check the menu and prices to see whether the meal fits your budget.

Day 2: Tamar in the morning, Tenório in the afternoon

Set aside the morning for the Projeto Tamar Visitor Centre, at Rua Antonio Atanázio, 273. Observation tanks, educational spaces, guides and Museu Caiçara introduce you to turtle conservation and local culture in a single visit. There is an admission charge; if your group enjoys this subject, it is worth giving the experience priority in your budget.

When checked on 30 October 2026, Tamar listed its opening hours as Thursday to Tuesday, from 9 am to 5 pm. If this day falls on a Wednesday, swap it with the Praia Grande and Toninhas day. Before leaving, take a break at the centre's snack bar. Turtle releases depend on the animals' recovery and a specific schedule.

In the afternoon, head to Tenório, described by the Tourism Department as a beach about 800 metres long, with fine sand, beach kiosks and rough seas. Walk along the sand and enjoy the scenery, checking local conditions before entering the water. You can reach it through the passage open to visitors in the residential development; budget separately for parking and services.

Would you rather watch surfing and take in rocky headlands? Swap Tenório for Vermelha do Centro. Access also starts from the area around kilometre 53 of the BR-101, via a different route through town. This gives you a change of scenery for the afternoon while keeping the outing on this stretch of coast.

Tenório is shown here at dawn; in the itinerary, the visit takes place in the afternoon after Tamar.

Day 3: a morning at Praia Grande and lunch nearby

Start the third day at Praia Grande, beside the BR-101, between Tenório and Toninhas. According to the Tourism Department, the beach is about 1.6 km long, with beach kiosks, places to eat and shops. Set aside the morning to walk along the sand and enjoy the sea as the day's conditions allow, without rushing to the next stop.

For lunch in the area, consider Espaço Jundu Gastrobar, at Avenida Atlântica, 2244. Grupo Jundu describes its approach as combining Asian techniques with Brazilian ingredients. It offers a chance to try something different from the caiçara cuisine at the Lounge Bar in Itaguá. Check the menu and prices before deciding.

After lunch, you have two options that fit the day: head to Toninhas to see another beach or stay at Praia Grande until late afternoon. Staying nearby saves one journey and gives you more time to enjoy the place you are already in.

Toninhas: a different landscape for the afternoon

If you want to change beaches after lunch, head to Toninhas. The access points for Praia Grande and Toninhas are near kilometres 54 and 56 of the Rio–Santos highway, respectively, allowing you to combine the two without returning to Centro. Use transport for this stretch and check your return journey to your accommodation.

Toninhas is approximately 1.2 km long and has beach kiosks and restaurants described by the Tourism Department. Spend the afternoon walking along the sand and enjoying the scenery between the two ends. The curve of the beach, surrounded by hills, makes for an outing in itself, without needing to add a climb to a viewpoint.

Choose where to settle after observing the sea and checking local guidance. To end the day at a calmer pace, arrange your return journey and enjoy this second beach without scheduling another attraction afterwards.

The curve of Toninhas continues the day that began at Praia Grande, with time to enjoy a second landscape.

Day 4: walking, rocky headlands and surfing at Itamambuca

Itamambuca deserves a day of its own. Its long stretch of sand, jundu coastal vegetation, rocky headlands and waves associated with surfing invite you to walk and stop to watch the sea. After exploring Centro and the nearby beaches, enjoy this change of scenery without fitting another area into the same day.

Plan to arrive via the land access through Condomínio Itamambuca, with a route of about 2 km inside the development, according to the Tourism Department. This route avoids relying on crossing the river via Recanto. Keep your outing to the beach: the Brava trail is rated difficult and requires separate planning.

Bring water and a substantial snack for a break between walking and watching the surfing. Arrange your return journey before leaving your accommodation, especially if you are using buses. This lets you enjoy Itamambuca without needing to return to Centro for food in the middle of the day.

Aquário: a rainy-day alternative and choosing where to pay admission

Has rain interrupted your beach day? Aquário de Ubatuba, at Rua Guarani, 859, offers an alternative with an ocean tank, a penguin enclosure and Museu da Vida Marinha. Combine the visit with a snack at Aquabar and save the walk along Rua Guarani for when the weather improves.

Since both Aquário and Tamar charge admission, choose according to your group's interests. Tamar combines turtle conservation and Museu Caiçara; Aquário brings together different marine-life attractions. You can visit both, but you can also prioritise one and save the rest of your budget for meals and transport.

For Aquário, plan to enter at 10 am or later and confirm the opening hours: the official pages checked on 30 October 2026 gave conflicting opening times. If you prefer to fit it into the first day, replace part of the walk around Centro and keep the snack stop and outing in Itaguá afterwards.

30 October to 1 November 2026: evenings at Feira das Nações

Will you be in Ubatuba between 30 October and 1 November 2026? Spend one of those evenings at the 38th Feira das Nações, at Praça de Eventos João Terra, Avenida Iperoig. This edition runs from 23 October to 1 November 2026 and brings together food from 11 institutions and performances from 7 pm, according to the municipal government's events calendar checked on 30 October.

The shows are free; food and drinks are paid for separately. It pairs well with your day in Centro: you can save the meal in Itaguá for another evening and finish in Iperoig, with music and food in the same place. Outside these dates, stick with dinner at Jundu Restaurante Lounge Bar, without counting on this edition of the fair.

  • 30 October 2026: Kilo Vox.
  • 31 October 2026: Jão Golengo and Engrenagem.
  • 1 November 2026: Nako & Rafael.

Now budget for the itinerary and pack your bags

Once you have chosen your base, open Viajandar's Calculadora de Custos de Viagem and enter your destination, number of travellers, travel style and total duration, including arrival and departure. It provides an estimate in Brazilian reais for accommodation, food and transport, with a 15% margin. The figures are for reference: use the result as a starting point, without treating it as a quote.

Compare the estimate with the prices you find for your accommodation, tickets or fuel, meals, parking, applicable TPA and admission fees. This is where specific itinerary decisions come in: visiting Tamar, Aquário or both; continuing to Toninhas or spending the afternoon at Praia Grande. Decide which experiences you want to prioritise before cutting costs.

Then turn your outings into a checklist in Mala Inteligente: select the heat/beach option, the total duration and the travellers' profiles. Adapt your packing to the weather forecast and remember water and a snack for Itamambuca. To explore the city beyond these four days, continue to the Ubatuba page on Viajandar, with municipal information, tourism and access to local services.

Which option suits you?

OptionA good fit if…What to consider
CentroYou want shops and services nearby and like to begin your trip with historic sights and the Iperoig waterfront. It makes the first day easier, but requires travel for beach outings. Compare the nightly rate together with transport costs.
ItaguáYou want to combine meals, waterfront walks, Rua Guarani and visits to Aquário and Tamar. This is our suggestion for balancing this itinerary. Beach days require travel; choose the neighbourhood for its attractions and services, without counting on swimming at Itaguá.
Praia GrandeYou prefer to base your stay around Praia Grande and combine it with an outing to Toninhas. It suits this stretch of coast, but requires travel to Centro and Itaguá. Check which side of the highway your accommodation is on.

Your itinerary, ready to save

Day 1 — Centro, Iperoig and Itaguá

Start at Praça Anchieta and view Sobradão do Porto from outside, respecting the construction barriers. Walk along Avenida Iperoig and head to Rua Guarani for a snack at Aquabar. Finish on the Itaguá waterfront with a meal at Jundu Restaurante Lounge Bar.

Prefer an alternative? To devote more time to marine life, replace part of the walk with Aquário de Ubatuba, on Rua Guarani. There is an admission charge; plan your visit for 10 am or later and confirm the opening hours.

Day 2 — Tamar and Tenório

Spend the morning at the Projeto Tamar Visitor Centre, including the educational spaces and Museu Caiçara. Take a break at the snack bar before leaving and set aside the afternoon for Tenório beach.

Prefer an alternative? Replace Tenório with Vermelha do Centro to watch surfing and take in rocky headlands. If the day falls on a Wednesday, swap the programme with Praia Grande and Toninhas, as Tamar lists its opening days as Thursday to Tuesday.

Day 3 — Praia Grande and Toninhas

Start at Praia Grande and have lunch in the area: Espaço Jundu Gastrobar, on Avenida Atlântica, is one suggestion. Afterwards, head to Toninhas to walk along the sand and enjoy the scenery, without returning to Centro between the two beaches.

Prefer an alternative? Stay at Praia Grande after lunch if you prefer more time on the sand and one less journey. Toninhas can wait for another visit.

Day 4 — Itamambuca

Devote the day to walking along Itamambuca's sand, enjoying the rocky headland scenery and watching the surfing. Use the land access through Condomínio Itamambuca, bring water and a substantial snack, and arrange your return journey before leaving your accommodation.

Prefer an alternative? If the forecast is unfavourable for the beach, swap the order with the Centro and Itaguá day. If you have already done that outing, visit Aquário and take a break at Aquabar, including admission in your budget.

Before you go

  • Compare the accommodation address and routes to Centro, Tamar, Praia Grande and Itamambuca before choosing based on the nightly rate.
  • When buying your bus ticket, check the drop-off point and the total purchase cost, including any administrative fees.
  • If arriving by vehicle, check the TPA rules and add the applicable charge to your fuel and parking costs.
  • Check outward and return buses, especially for Itamambuca, and bring water and a substantial snack that day.
  • When checked on 30 October 2026, Tamar listed its opening hours as Thursday to Tuesday, from 9 am to 5 pm. Adjust the order of your days and reconfirm before visiting.
  • For Aquário, plan to enter at 10 am or later and confirm the opening hours for your chosen date.
  • Check the opening hours and menus for Aquabar and the Jundu locations. These suggestions do not include quoted prices.
  • Sobradão do Porto and Museu Histórico Washington de Oliveira were closed to indoor visits according to the sources checked on 30 October 2026.
  • The Feira das Nações programme applies only to the specified dates in 2026. The shows are free; food is paid for separately.
  • Check the forecast and local sea conditions. The photographs are archive images.

Questions to help you decide

Which of the three bases is best suited to a first visit?

Our suggestion is Itaguá, for its combination of restaurants, shops, waterfront and outings along Rua Guarani. Centro is convenient for services and walks along Iperoig; Praia Grande suits those who want to spend more time on that stretch of beach. Compare the exact address and journeys as well as the nightly rate.

Can I follow the itinerary without a car?

You can plan the trip without a car by checking routes between your accommodation and each outing. The municipal government recommends Moovit for checking stops and timetables. In particular, check the outward and return journeys for Itamambuca before finalising your plans.

Do the four days include arrival and departure?

No. These are four full days of outings, with arrival and departure outside that count. Allow for these journeys in your accommodation dates and budget.

Is it worth paying for Tamar and Aquário on the same trip?

It depends on your group's interests and budget. Tamar brings together turtle conservation, educational spaces and Museu Caiçara. Aquário has an ocean tank, a penguin enclosure and Museu da Vida Marinha. Both charge admission, and you can choose just one without disrupting the itinerary.

What can I do if it rains?

Visit Aquário de Ubatuba, on Rua Guarani, and combine it with a snack at Aquabar. Plan to enter at 10 am or later and confirm the opening hours, as the attraction's website gives conflicting information. Museu Histórico Washington de Oliveira was closed for renovation when checked on 30 October 2026.

Are Iperoig and Itaguá included as beaches for swimming?

Here, Iperoig is included for walking and enjoying the view; Itaguá for its waterfront, meals and nearby attractions. For beach days, the itinerary takes you to Tenório, Praia Grande, Toninhas and Itamambuca. Check local conditions before entering the sea.
