GETTING STARTED

Wednesday in Ipiranga, Thursday at Japan House and Casa das Rosas, Friday at IMS followed by MASP after 18:00, and Saturday in Luz. The sequence takes advantage of free admission and groups journeys; to save on Saturday afternoon too, replace the Portuguese Language Museum with Pina Contemporânea.

Who it is for: Travellers who enjoy museums, architecture and food breaks and want to control spending across four full sightseeing days in São Paulo, Wednesday to Saturday.

Plan the days in this order to spend less and enjoy the visits

The sequence that fits outings and free admission is this: Wednesday in Ipiranga, Thursday between Japan House and Casa das Rosas, Friday with IMS and MASP, and Saturday in Luz. You keep each day in one area or stretch of Paulista rather than crossing São Paulo for an isolated attraction.

These are four full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. This selection is for visitors wanting to enter museums, observe architecture and sit down for a break; it can also fit within a longer stay. The pacing suggestions leave room to look at exhibitions without turning each day into a race.

The main admission cost in the proposed sequence is the Portuguese Language Museum, which has no general free Saturday admission under the rules consulted. You can replace it with Pina Contemporânea. Information and calendars were checked on 16/10/2026: before booking, see whether the conditions still apply to your dates.

Where to stay for convenient journeys

I suggest comparing accommodation near Paraíso, Brigadeiro or Consolação. Paraíso and Brigadeiro are convenient for Thursday at the beginning of Paulista; Consolação puts you near IMS, Friday’s starting point. Paraíso serves the Blue and Green lines. Compare the actual walk between the address and station as well as the total booking cost: being near the metro does not mean lower nightly rates.

Use the network map to plan routes to Alto do Ipiranga, Trianon-MASP and Luz. On the Ipiranga Museum day, you must still complete the route after leaving the metro. Japan House and Casa das Rosas are on opposite sides of the same avenue stretch; on Friday, IMS and MASP form a sequence along Paulista without needing to return to your accommodation between them.

If arriving at Guarulhos, the train is an alternative to compare with road transport. Aeroporto–Guarulhos station is on Line 13-Jade, linked to Engenheiro Goulart and Line 12-Safira. Decide according to the final address, connections and luggage; do not assume a fixed arrival time.

Wednesday: history at the Ipiranga Museum and a park break

Start Wednesday at the Ipiranga Museum, Rua dos Patriotas, 100. Admission is free that day, but tickets must be collected in person and can run out. Suggestion: arrive when it opens at 10:00 to try to secure your visit before spending time in the park. Free tickets cannot be reserved online.

Inside the museum, one possible sequence begins with Para entender o Museu (Understanding the Museum), which introduces the building and how the collection was formed. Continue to Uma História do Brasil (A History of Brazil), passing through the entrance hall, staircase and Salão Nobre, where Pedro Américo’s Independência ou morte! (Independence or Death!) is displayed. Afterwards, Mundos do trabalho (Worlds of Work) broadens the visit to other experiences in Brazilian history.

On leaving, continue through Parque da Independência, which has free admission. Explore the French-inspired gardens and head towards the Independence Monument, taking a break in the green spaces. Museum and park form a logical day in the same neighbourhood without adding a journey to Paulista.

If general tickets run out, there is a practical alternative during Liberdade: bairro plural (Liberdade: A Plural Neighbourhood), running from 07/07/2026 to 31/01/2027. The exhibition brings together objects, photographs and documents about the neighbourhood’s different communities and has its own free admission. Combine it with the park; exhibition entry does not automatically grant access to the rest of the museum.

Thursday morning: Japanese ceramics and a break at Aizomê

On Thursday, go to Japan House at Avenida Paulista, 52, accessible via Paraíso or Brigadeiro stations. On weekdays it opens 10:00–18:00. The reason to start here this season is Cerâmica em curso (Ceramics in Progress), a free exhibition confirmed for 06/10/2026–30/05/2027.

The exhibition brings together historic and contemporary pieces associated with Bizen, Echizen, Seto, Shigaraki, Tamba and Tokoname, six traditional Japanese production centres. Clay samples and explanations of kilns help show why textures, colours and finishes vary so much. Suggestion: choose a few pieces to compare carefully rather than simply trying to pass every display case.

For a break, consider Restaurante Aizomê, serving lunch Tuesday–Sunday, or Aizomê Café. Both let you eat within the venue before continuing to Casa das Rosas. Check the menu to decide what fits your budget: food is charged separately, and the itinerary does not assume low prices.

Thursday afternoon: Casa das Rosas's mansion and garden

After Japan House, cross to Casa das Rosas at Avenida Paulista, 37. Admission is free, and the mansion completed in 1935 helps you imagine the avenue's residential era. The visit gains interest when you look at the house and then look again at the surrounding Paulista.

The complex includes the mansion, an outbuilding and grounds with a rose garden. I suggest first visiting the museum spaces, which explore changes to the property, avenue and city, and leaving the garden until last. Last museum admission is at 17:30, and you can stay until 18:00; the garden opens daily 7:00–22:00.

If you prefer to eat on this side of the avenue, Caffè Ristoro offers Italian food and opens Tuesday–Sunday, 10:30–18:00, according to the page consulted. It can replace the Aizomê break. You can also reverse the day: Casa das Rosas in the morning, Ristoro and Japan House in the afternoon, keeping the same two addresses.

Friday daytime: exhibitions, social history and Balaio at IMS

Reserve Friday for another Paulista stretch. Begin late morning at IMS, number 2424, near Consolação and Paulista stations. The cultural centre and exhibitions have free admission without booking, with usual hours of 10:00–20:00. Praça IMS and the bookshop provide breaks between galleries.

Until 22/11/2026, Dignidade e luta: Laudelina de Campos Mello (Dignity and Struggle) adds social history to the visit. The exhibition, which opened on 16/05/2026, brings together photographs, documents, historical objects and contemporary works about her life and work for domestic workers’ rights. It pairs well with MASP that evening because the two visits give the day different themes.

To eat without searching for another address, consider Restaurante Balaio on the ground floor or Café Balaio in Praça IMS. Suggestion: choose the restaurant for a meal during the visit; save the café for a shorter break before continuing along the avenue. Check hours and the menu without assuming these are the cheapest options.

Travelling between 15 and 29/10/2026? The 50th São Paulo International Film Festival has a programme at IMS and free screenings at 14:00, subject to obtaining a ticket and available capacity. One confirmed choice for Wednesday, 21/10/2026, is A garota com a Leica (The Girl with the Leica), by Alina Marazzi, about photographer Gerda Taro, at 14:00. If that film is a priority, replace the Ipiranga day with IMS exhibitions and cinema and keep Friday focused on MASP. This means leaving Ipiranga out of this itinerary; trying to fit both into Wednesday would add travel and make the day rushed. Other screenings are not automatically free.

Friday evening: free MASP from 18:00

After IMS, follow Paulista towards MASP at number 1578. Free Friday admission begins at 18:00, and official guidance is to obtain tickets in advance, particularly for free periods. Arrange this entry before setting out: it is the timed commitment shaping the afternoon.

Your ticket covers the exhibitions on display that day. For visitors in the city on 23/10/2026, a guided discussion of Acervo em transformação (Collection in Transformation) takes place at 19:00, by reservation. It offers a practical starting point for exploring the collection; check how to book the activity as well as the admission conditions.

If you prefer daytime museum visits, a longer stay allows moving MASP to Tuesday, which is also free. Without a ticket for this Friday, the alternative is to remain in IMS's exhibitions and Praça IMS until the cultural centre closes. Also note food arrangements: A Baianeira on the ground floor of the Pietro Maria Bardi building, Paulista 1500, has confirmed lunch service; it can fit a daytime visit, but do not count on it for dinner after the museum.

Saturday morning: Brazilian art at Pina Luz

On Saturday, concentrate the day in Luz and begin at Pina Luz, Praça da Luz, 2. The Pinacoteca is devoted to visual arts, focusing on Brazilian production from the 19th century to the present. Suggestion: arrive at 10:00 and spend the morning observing changes across periods, themes and ways of representing the country.

The Pinacoteca's three buildings have free Saturday admission. This lets you choose the afternoon without buying separate tickets: Pina Contemporânea at Avenida Tiradentes, 273, is the alternative for continuing with visual arts and avoiding paid Portuguese Language Museum admission. Pina Luz and Contemporânea are accessed through Luz station; listed hours run until 18:00, with entry until 17:00.

For a break, consider Café e Restaurante Fitó, confirmed on the Pinacoteca's visit page. Access requires no museum ticket, giving flexibility to arrange your meal. Check location and hours when planning; the source consulted does not establish a time or dish. Afterwards, continue to the Portuguese Language Museum or Pina Contemporânea, according to your afternoon choice.

Saturday afternoon: listening to and experiencing Portuguese

After the Pinacoteca, the Portuguese Language Museum changes how you participate in the outing: you move from visual arts to accents, vocabularies, literature and music. This combination uses the Luz day well and avoids returning to the area just for that visit.

In the main exhibition, include Falares, devoted to different accents and vocabularies, and try to experience Praça da Língua, a sound-and-projection experience with Brazilian literature and music. Luz Station's terrace is also part of the visit presented by the museum. On arrival, ask about entry tokens: Praça da Língua and the auditorium have limited capacity, and general admission alone does not guarantee participation.

Here is Saturday's budget choice. General free admission is listed for Tuesdays and Sundays; in this itinerary, set aside money for a ticket or choose Pina Contemporânea. If keeping the Portuguese Language Museum, obtain admission and plan to arrive early afternoon: last entry is 16:30, with stays until 18:00.

Turn choices into a budget and packing list

To control spending, begin with decisions that change this itinerary: accommodation near a useful station, free MASP admission arranged before the trip, and Saturday's choice between the Portuguese Language Museum and Pina Contemporânea. At the suggested cafés and restaurants, compare menus before deciding on a meal. Being inside a museum makes the outing easier but does not establish low prices.

In Viajandar's Trip Calculator, enter São Paulo, the number of travellers, style and full stay duration, including arrival and departure. The result is an illustrative estimate in Brazilian reais for accommodation, food, transport and a margin. Compare reference figures with your research and count separately any admissions and journeys not covered.

Then enter the full duration in Mala Inteligente and choose the climate based on the forecast shortly before departure. Use the checklist as a starting point and review it for walks between museums: comfortable shoes, rain protection and personal items. To continue planning beyond these four days, Viajandar’s São Paulo page provides municipal information and links to accommodation, food and other local services.

Your itinerary, ready to save

Wednesday — Ipiranga

I suggest arriving at the Ipiranga Museum when it opens at 10:00 to try to collect a free ticket. Visit Para entender o Museu (Understanding the Museum), Uma História do Brasil (A History of Brazil) and Mundos do trabalho (Worlds of Work). Afterwards, walk through the gardens of Parque da Independência towards the monument, leaving time to rest in the park itself.

Prefer an alternative? If general tickets run out, visit Liberdade: bairro plural (Liberdade: A Plural Neighbourhood), with its own free admission from 07/07/2026 to 31/01/2027, then continue to the gardens and Independence Monument.

Thursday — the start of Avenida Paulista

Begin at Japan House, Paulista 52, and visit Cerâmica em curso (Ceramics in Progress) during its run. For food, consider lunch at Aizomê or a break at Aizomê Café. Then cross to Casa das Rosas, Paulista 37, and visit the mansion and garden before the museum closes.

Prefer an alternative? Begin at Casa das Rosas at 10:00, take a Caffè Ristoro break from 10:30 and then cross to Japan House. Reversing the order keeps the outing in the same Paulista stretch.

Friday — IMS and MASP

Suggestion: start late morning at IMS Paulista, Paulista 2424. Combine exhibitions with lunch at Restaurante Balaio or a Café Balaio break. Then follow the avenue towards MASP, Paulista 1578, with a ticket obtained for free admission from 18:00.

Prefer an alternative? Without a MASP ticket, extend the exhibitions and Praça IMS visit within the cultural centre's hours until 20:00. If your stay includes a Tuesday, try moving MASP to that other free day.

Saturday — Luz

Begin at 10:00 at Pina Luz, Praça da Luz, 2, to see Brazilian art. Consider a Café e Restaurante Fitó break. In the afternoon, visit the Portuguese Language Museum with admission obtained, arriving before last entry at 16:30. On entering, ask about the token for Praça da Língua.

Prefer an alternative? Replace the Portuguese Language Museum with Pina Contemporânea, Avenida Tiradentes, 273. The afternoon then continues with art and uses the Pinacoteca's free Saturday admission.

Before you go

  • Recheck entry rules for your dates: operating information was consulted on 16/10/2026.
  • At the Ipiranga Museum, collect free Wednesday admission in person; tickets can run out. The museum opens 10:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:00.
  • Obtain MASP admission in advance for Friday after 18:00. The guided activity on 23/10/2026 at 19:00 requires a reservation; check that condition separately.
  • On Thursday, remember that Casa das Rosas's museum stops admitting visitors at 17:30, with stays until 18:00. The garden has longer hours.
  • On Saturday, the Pinacoteca receives visitors 10:00–18:00, with entry until 17:00. The Para crianças (For Children) exhibition has 90-minute visiting slots and limited weekend capacity.
  • The Portuguese Language Museum admits visitors until 16:30, with stays until 18:00. Obtain your ticket and ask about separate tokens for Praça da Língua and the auditorium.
  • Check hours and menus at chosen cafés and restaurants; their inclusion does not mean meals are included or low-priced.
  • If extending the trip to Sunday, 25/10/2026, note announced exceptions: IMS and the Portuguese Language Museum closed; Ipiranga Museum open 13:00–17:00.
  • Compare your accommodation address with the metro map. For the Ipiranga Museum, plan to complete the route from Alto do Ipiranga.
  • In the Trip Calculator and Mala Inteligente, use the full stay duration, including arrival and departure.

Questions to help you decide

Can I do all four days without paying admission?

Under the rules consulted on 16/10/2026, you can organise the sequence with free admission: Ipiranga Museum on Wednesday, subject to in-person ticket collection; Japan House and Casa das Rosas on Thursday; IMS during the day and MASP after 18:00 on Friday; Pina Luz and Pina Contemporânea on Saturday. Transport, food and accommodation remain in the budget. The Portuguese Language Museum is the paid visit in Saturday’s main version.

Can I reserve the Ipiranga Museum's free ticket online?

No. Free Wednesday admission requires collecting a ticket in person on the day, and tickets can run out. During the run of Liberdade: bairro plural (Liberdade: A Plural Neighbourhood), that exhibition has its own free admission, which does not automatically provide access to the rest of the museum.

Is MASP free all Friday?

On Friday, free admission begins at 18:00. Obtain tickets in advance according to official guidance. For a longer trip, Tuesday also offers free admission and allows a daytime visit.

Is the Portuguese Language Museum also free on Saturday?

Not under the rules consulted. General free admission is listed for Tuesdays and Sundays, always with tickets issued. On Saturday, this itinerary's free alternative is Pina Contemporânea after Pina Luz.

Which area should I search for accommodation in?

Compare addresses near Paraíso, Brigadeiro and Consolação. Paraíso and Brigadeiro fit Japan House and Casa das Rosas well; Consolação favours starting the day at IMS. Check the actual walk to the station and total accommodation cost: being near the metro does not establish lower nightly rates.

Do these four days include arrival and departure?

These are four full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. The itinerary also works as a cultural selection within a longer trip; it does not aim to include everything to do in São Paulo.

Can I use the itinerary in another season?

Temporary exhibitions and activities have specific dates. Outside those dates, keep the area groupings and check official programmes before obtaining tickets. This article's operating rules were consulted on 16/10/2026 and must be rechecked for your trip.
