GETTING STARTED

Explore Salvador in five full days, excluding arrival and departure: Pelourinho and Santo Antônio, Comércio and Cidade da Música, Barra, Bonfim and Ribeira, and Rio Vermelho. Choose a base balancing beach and centre, use a free Wednesday and leave time for breaks at Sorveteria da Ribeira and Casa de Tereza.

Who it is for: First-time visitors to Salvador who want to combine history, music, the beach and Bahian food, choosing accommodation and transport that work well with the itinerary.

Five days exploring Salvador, with nearby sights grouped together

You can combine Pelourinho, museums, beach, Bonfim and Bahian food in five days without making every morning a journey across the city. We will organise Salvador by proximity: two days for the Historic Centre and Comércio, one for Barra, another for Bonfim and Ribeira, and the last for Rio Vermelho. You discover different sides of the city and use each outing to visit places that fit together.

These are five full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. The itinerary is designed for a first city visit and leaves islands and the northern coast for a trip with more time. Change the days' order according to museum opening, free Wednesday admission and beach conditions; preserve the combinations of nearby places.

Where to stay: nearby beach or Historic Centre walks?

Choose Barra if you want beach time to be a regular part of your stay. Staying near Porto da Barra lets you enjoy the sand and walk to the lighthouse without organising a separate outing to the neighbourhood. When comparing accommodation, include transport for the Historic Centre, Bonfim and Rio Vermelho days.

Pelourinho and Santo Antônio Além do Carmo make more sense if you are enthusiastic about the Historic Centre's sequence of squares, museums and streets. There you are close to much of day one and connections to Comércio. Check each accommodation's address: it tells you more about your routes than a description simply saying Centre.

Before deciding, compare two complete totals: Barra accommodation plus journeys to other neighbourhoods; Historic Centre accommodation plus trips to the beach and Rio Vermelho. Also check where transport can drop you in relation to the accommodation’s entrance. For these five days, we suggest keeping one base so you can spend the time saved by avoiding a move on sightseeing.

Arriving and avoiding unnecessary backtracking

On arrival, you can use the free airport shuttle to the metro's Estação Aeroporto. Free travel ends with that shuttle; the metro journey is paid. There is also an urban bus terminal beside the car park. Compare the full route to your accommodation with a direct ride, considering the final connection, luggage and number of people travelling with you.

For central outings, get to know links between the two parts of the city. Elevador Lacerda connects the Lower and Upper Cities in front of Mercado Modelo. Plano Inclinado Gonçalves links Comércio and Pelourinho near Casa do Carnaval, while Pilar links Comércio and Carmo. Choose according to where you want to arrive and check operation before heading to them.

To avoid backtracking that costs time and money, keep Mercado Modelo and Cidade da Música in one outing; Bonfim and Ribeira in another; and Casa do Rio Vermelho and the neighbourhood waterfront on the same day. These combinations make journeys worthwhile even if you change the five days' order.

Day 1: from Carnival to Pelourinho and on to Santo Antônio

Begin at Casa do Carnaval on Praça Ramos de Queirós beside the Cathedral Basilica. Instruments, clothing, documents and audiovisual displays introduce the festival's history and help explain music's presence in Salvador. It is a good way to start before heading into the central streets.

Then continue to Terreiro de Jesus and Largo do Pelourinho. Leave time to observe the historic townhouses and changing perspectives between streets and squares. In the afternoon, continue via Igreja do Passo's steps, Carmo and Cruz do Pascoal to Santo Antônio Além do Carmo. The steps became associated with the 1962 film O Pagador de Promessas and are worth a stop; you can see them without entering the church.

Take a break after Largo do Pelourinho and leave the rest of the afternoon for the route through Carmo to Santo Antônio. This lets you cover the stretch without squeezing it between two commitments. In rain, spend more time at Casa do Carnaval and shorten the walk to Terreiro de Jesus and Largo do Pelourinho as weather permits.

When consulted on 17 October 2026, Casa do Carnaval listed Tuesday–Sunday opening from 9:00 to 17:00, entry until 16:00 and free Wednesdays. Check service before going. If choosing that free Wednesday, use it for the full Historic Centre outing on the same day.

Day 2: crafts, music and the connection between the two cities

Begin at Mercado Modelo on Praça Visconde de Cayru in Comércio. You will find craft shops in the former customs building, occupied by the market since 1971. Explore the building, browse shops and compare products before choosing souvenirs to take home.

Next is Cidade da Música at Casarão dos Azulejos Azuis, number 19 on the same square. Testimonies, projections and interactive experiences introduce Bahia's musical history. If this interests you, leave room for the ticket in your budget: the visit expands the theme begun at Casa do Carnaval and is near the market.

Then head to Elevador Lacerda to ascend to the Upper City and Praça Municipal, depending on operation. If unavailable, check Plano Inclinado Gonçalves: you will arrive in Pelourinho near Casa do Carnaval and can end the outing there.

When consulted on 17 October 2026, Cidade da Música listed Tuesday–Sunday hours of 9:00–17:00, with entry until 16:00. To spend plenty of time in shops, visit the museum first and save shopping for afterwards. This swap keeps both outings in one area and protects visiting time.

Day 3: Porto da Barra, maritime history and an unhurried afternoon

Devote the morning to Porto da Barra between Santa Maria and São Diogo forts. Here the beach deserves its own time: enjoy the sand and decide about swimming according to that day's sea conditions. The rest of the outing remains in Barra, so you can take a break before continuing.

Then walk along the waterfront to Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra. Inside, the Nautical Museum brings together navigation instruments, ship models and objects recovered from the galleon Santíssimo Sacramento. The combination takes you from beach to maritime history without crossing to another neighbourhood.

Buy a ticket if you want to see the collection, and check separately whether you can climb the tower. If you prefer to stay outdoors, the lighthouse surroundings make a worthwhile next stop. You can finish there or extend the waterfront walk to Cristo.

If conditions do not allow swimming, begin at the Nautical Museum and wait for the weather to improve before walking around the lighthouse. Check museum hours before reversing the sequence.

Day 4: Bonfim, Ribeira waterfront and an ice-cream break

Set aside this day for the Itapagipe peninsula. Begin at the Basilica of Bonfim and visit the Sala dos Milagres (Room of Miracles) if it is accessible. Besides seeing the façade and ribbons on the railings, you can explore a space connected with the devotion of people who visit the church. Allow time here before continuing towards the water.

Continue to Praça Divina, where Ladeira Porto do Bonfim meets Avenida Beira Mar, then to Ribeira’s waterfront. These places are on the same peninsula, but the complete route needs planning: consider transport between sections so the outing does not become a longer walk than you would like.

To finish, take an ice-cream break at Sorveteria da Ribeira's Ribeira branch. It fits the waterfront outing and avoids an extra trip just for food. On the brand's channel, select Ribeira—there are also Imbuí and Shopping Barra branches—and check service before going. Choose a flavour from what is available that day.

For a shorter day, keep the Basilica, Room of Miracles and Praça Divina. You can enjoy Bonfim more calmly and save Ribeira's waterfront and ice-cream shop for another occasion.

Day 5: Jorge and Zélia, regional food and Rio Vermelho's waterfront

Begin at Casa do Rio Vermelho, Rua Alagoinhas, 33, the former home of Jorge Amado and Zélia Gattai. Objects, a library, artworks, garden and audiovisual material make up the memorial. Reserve the morning to explore carefully and discover more about the two writers' lives and cultural work.

For lunch, the suggestion is Casa de Tereza at Rua Odilon Santos, 45. Tereza Paim's Brazilian and regional food shares space with art-focused rooms such as Salão Bel Borba and Galeria Yemanjá. The break combines Bahian food and art while keeping the outing in Rio Vermelho.

The restaurant website consulted on 17 October 2026 lists daily service from 12:00, with closing times varying by day of the week. Check the current menu to see whether the meal fits your budget, and consult the booking channel before going.

In the afternoon, head to the area around Casa de Iemanjá on Rua Guedes Cabral, associated with the fishing colony, and complete your walk along the waterfront. Plan to view the house from outside; if you want to enter, confirm access on site. To view the beach and house without going down onto the sand, visit Mirante do Rio Vermelho.

When consulted on 17 October 2026, Casa do Rio Vermelho listed Tuesday–Sunday opening from 9:00 to 17:00, entry until 16:00 and free Wednesdays. If this memorial is your priority, place Rio Vermelho day on Wednesday and keep lunch and the waterfront in the same outing.

Arrange the days around opening times and take advantage of free Wednesday admission

Match outings to your trip calendar. Casa do Carnaval, Cidade da Música and Casa do Rio Vermelho listed Tuesday–Sunday opening when consulted on 17 October 2026. If the stay includes Monday, a good option is Porto da Barra and the lighthouse surroundings; check Nautical Museum opening if you want to include it.

If there is a Wednesday, choose the free admission that interests you more: Casa do Carnaval with Pelourinho, or Casa do Rio Vermelho with lunch and the waterfront. Doing both solely for free entry may add transport and shorten visits. Compare the full day's spending and time before deciding.

In rain, use indoor visits near the planned outing: Casa do Carnaval in Pelourinho, Cidade da Música in Comércio, the Nautical Museum in Barra and Casa do Rio Vermelho in its namesake neighbourhood. Check opening before rearranging days and save walks for better conditions.

15 November 2026: a Timbalada rehearsal in Candeal

According to the official calendar, Timbalada holds its first summer rehearsal on 15 November 2026 at Candyall Guetho Square in Candeal. If it coincides with your five days in Salvador, consider the show: after discovering Bahia's musical history in museums, you can add live Afro-Bahian percussion to the trip.

The calendar was consulted on 17 October 2026; the announcement gives date, act and venue but no time or price. Use the official link to check those details and arrange transport to and from Candeal. One way to make room is the short Bonfim outing—Basilica, Room of Miracles and Praça Divina—leaving out Ribeira and the ice-cream shop according to the rehearsal time.

Turn the itinerary into a budget and checklist

In Viajandar's Trip Calculator, enter Salvador, full stay duration, traveller count and travel style. You will see an illustrative estimate in Brazilian reais for accommodation, food and transport, with a 15% margin. Compare scenarios, then adjust plans to prices you research for your dates. The result is a reference, not a quote.

In Mala Inteligente, select the Hot/Beach climate profile and include arrival and departure in the duration. Use the checklist to prepare for Historic Centre walking days, museum visits and the Porto da Barra morning. Before closing your bag, check the weather forecast yourself and review the list for expected conditions.

  • Compare accommodation and transport together, using the five outings to estimate journeys.
  • Decide which paid museums to visit before setting aside souvenir money for Mercado Modelo.
  • Check Casa de Tereza's current menu to plan lunch, and keep the Sorveteria da Ribeira break with the peninsula outing.
  • Add chosen tickets and any Timbalada rehearsal to planning alongside the calculator's categories.

  • Check Elevador Lacerda or Plano Inclinado Gonçalves operation before depending on them to change between Lower and Upper City.
  • Separate Cidade da Música and Nautical Museum admissions from food, transport and souvenir budgets.
  • Check Casa de Tereza's menu and service and confirm service at Sorveteria da Ribeira's Ribeira branch before the breaks.
  • Assess sea conditions on the Porto da Barra day; the Nautical Museum is the same outing's indoor alternative.
  • If the trip coincides with 15 November 2026, check time, admission and transport for Timbalada's Candeal rehearsal.

Questions to help you decide

Do the five days include arrival and the return journey?

These are five full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. The itinerary combines history, music, beach and food on a first city visit without including islands or the northern coast. Reserve more days to add those outings.

Is Barra or the Historic Centre the better base?

Barra suits visitors who want beach time to be a regular part of their stay. Pelourinho and Santo Antônio Além do Carmo are convenient for cultural visits in the Historic Centre. Compare accommodation costs plus journeys and check the exact address: the neighbourhood name alone does not guarantee a cheaper stay.

Can I leave the airport by public transport?

The airport lists a free shuttle to the metro's Estação Aeroporto. Free travel does not include the metro ride. Compare the full route, including the final connection to accommodation, with direct transport; luggage and traveller count also affect the choice.

Which free admissions help organise the week?

Casa do Carnaval and Casa do Rio Vermelho listed free Wednesdays on pages consulted on 17 October 2026. Choose whichever best fits your itinerary and check conditions before visiting. Budget for Cidade da Música and Nautical Museum tickets.

How can outings be adapted for rain?

Spend more time on indoor visits in the area where you already are: Casa do Carnaval in the Historic Centre, Cidade da Música in Comércio, the Nautical Museum in Barra and Casa do Rio Vermelho in its namesake neighbourhood. Check opening days before changing the order.

Is there a confirmed event to include?

The official calendar announces Timbalada's first summer rehearsal on 15 November 2026 at Candyall Guetho Square in Candeal. If it matches your trip, consult the official link in the events section for time and tickets. The consultation does not allow listing every city event.
