GETTING STARTED

Set aside one day for Ipanema and Arpoador, another for Urca and a third for the city centre. The appeal lies in the combinations: beach and sunset, cable car and a pause by the bay, an exhibition and coffee in a historic pastry shop.

Who it is for: People planning their first trip who want beaches, scenery and culture in one itinerary.

Day 1 · Ipanema, sand underfoot and Arpoador

Arrived in Rio and want to start with the sea? Choose Ipanema. We suggest saving the afternoon for the beachfront and heading towards Arpoador, without fitting in an attraction across town along the way. That leaves room for a leisurely lunch, a walk or the kind of pause where looking at the scenery is the whole plan.

To finish your outing, stay around Arpoador. Its rock is one of the places Riotur recommends for views of the sea and sunset. If the sky cooperates, wonderful; if it does not, the waterfront remains the outing — a cloud need not become a travel disappointment. Check local conditions before entering the sea or climbing onto the rocks.

Only have an afternoon? Do exactly this part. You do not need to cross all of Copacabana to feel you have made the most of the day. Start wherever is most convenient, choose a food stop and leave Arpoador as your finale, rather than another item in a race against the clock.

Day 2 · Cable car, Praia Vermelha and Urca

Today Rio changes angle. Make Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar your main attraction and organise the rest around your chosen ticket. This outing is for anyone keen to see the city from above; buy through the official channel and check the ticket conditions before finalising your schedule.

In the same area, include a stop at Praia Vermelha. Afterwards, if you still have time and energy, head to Mureta da Urca: Riotur highlights the bay views and snacks served by the surrounding bars. It is a good way to end the afternoon, but allow for travel between Praia Vermelha and the seawall — they are separate stops.

If the cable car stretches your budget, do the sea-level version: Praia Vermelha and Urca, with a food break. You trade the view from above for an outing around the area and save money for another priority. If bad weather is forecast, swap this day with the city centre day before buying a ticket with restrictive conditions.

Day 3 · An exhibition and coffee with history

The city centre deserves a place in your trip for what it offers, not just as an emergency rain plan. Start with the programme at CCBB, at Rua Primeiro de Março, 66. Choose an exhibition that sparks your curiosity and book a ticket when required. Leaving with a new discovery is much more enjoyable than going through every room out of duty.

For a break, our suggestion is Casa Cavé, at Rua Sete de Setembro, 133. The pastry shop presents itself as an establishment dating from 1860 and keeps sweet and savoury items on its menu. Coffee with a pastel de Belém is a tempting combination to put on your itinerary: consult the establishment’s channel to confirm service on the day.

CCBB and Cavé make two stops in the city centre, with travel between them. Check the route from wherever you are, leave time to sit and eat, and avoid scheduling your next activity immediately after the visit. If the pastry shop does not fit your timing, keep CCBB and choose a food break nearby; your cultural outing does not depend on one particular table.

Visiting in October 2026? Take a look at this exhibition

When checked on 1 October, CCBB Rio’s programme listed “Amazônicas — Poéticas Femininas” until 16 November 2026. The exhibition brings together contemporary art by women from Pará, Acre and Amazonas. If you enjoy discovering artists and venturing beyond the beach-and-viewpoint circuit, it gives you a lovely reason to set aside a day for the city centre.

CCBB states that this exhibition opens Wednesday to Monday and closes on Tuesdays. Open the exhibition page to check tickets and any changes before setting out. Our suggestion: see the exhibition first, then use coffee at Cavé to talk about what caught your attention. Travelling at another time? Use CCBB’s programme to choose another show and keep the combination.

Where to stay to make this itinerary work well

For this itinerary, compare accommodation in Copacabana, Ipanema and Botafogo. Ipanema suits the beachfront day; Botafogo is worth comparing because of the Urca outing; Copacabana deserves a look if you want to add its own beach to your plans. These are starting points for research, not a hotel ranking or a promise of quick journeys.

Before choosing, compare the exact address with all three days of the itinerary. A neighbourhood name alone does not tell you the distance to the transport you intend to use. Look at the total price for your dates, the cancellation policy and recent reviews about what matters to you — quiet, for example, may be worth more than an attractive pool photograph.

Time to pack and work out the budget

Once you have chosen your outings, open Mala Inteligente and build your checklist. For this itinerary, begin with clothes for walking, comfortable shoes, beach items and a light layer for air-conditioned spaces. Adjust the list to the forecast close to your trip and to your needs; there is no need to bring half your wardrobe for three days.

In the travel calculator, organise an initial estimate by category. Separate the cable car ticket, transport, accommodation and food stops. The tool’s figures are illustrative: confirm prices with suppliers. If the budget is tight, swap the cable car for Praia Vermelha and Urca or choose two days from this itinerary. Coffee and sunset do not have to compete with a packed schedule.

Your itinerary, ready to save

Beach time and late afternoon at Arpoador

Start in Ipanema, stop for lunch and follow the beachfront towards Arpoador. Save late afternoon for the scenery.

Prefer an alternative? If it rains, bring CCBB and Casa Cavé forward, provided they are open that day.

Urca with or without the cable car

Combine Parque Bondinho with Praia Vermelha. To extend your outing, head afterwards to Mureta da Urca and take a break for snacks.

Prefer an alternative? To spend less on tickets, stick to Praia Vermelha and Urca without taking the ride up to the park.

The city centre with art and something sweet

Choose an exhibition at CCBB and combine it with coffee at Casa Cavé. In October 2026, consider Amazônicas — Poéticas Femininas.

Prefer an alternative? Does this fall on a Tuesday? Swap it with the beachfront or Urca day; the exhibition mentioned is closed on Tuesdays.

Before you go

  • Cable car: check the ticket and change conditions before buying.
  • CCBB: choose your exhibition and check opening days; the suggested show closes on Tuesdays.
  • Casa Cavé: confirm service through the establishment’s own channel before counting on this stop.
  • Accommodation: compare the full address, total cost and cancellation policy for your dates.

Questions to help you decide

What about Christ the Redeemer — is it left out?

It is left out of this itinerary, yes. The idea is to enjoy three areas without piling up every attraction. If Christ the Redeemer is your big wish, set aside time for it and remove another activity; confirm access and tickets through the responsible official channel before making the swap.

Can I change the order of the days?

Yes, and it is worth doing. Use the weather forecast and CCBB opening days to decide the order, respecting the conditions of any tickets you have already bought.

Does the calculator show what I will actually pay?

It helps you build an estimate using illustrative figures. Your final total depends on accommodation, transport, food and ticket prices for your chosen dates.
