GETTING STARTED

Combine the Old Town, art nouveau façades and interiors, Central Market and Latvia’s recent history with plenty of time in Jugla. For 15–18 November 2026, the sequence allows for the listed closures and includes optional evenings at Staro Rīga, with breaks at Milda, LIDO Vērmanītis and the market.

Who it is for: Brazilians visiting Riga for the first time, with four whole days for architecture, history, food and outdoor outings using public transport and comfortable options.

Four whole days, with room to explore and pause

Four days in Riga can offer plenty of variety: enter a reconstructed merchants' house, discover art nouveau outside and in, eat between outings and leave the centre for rural buildings beside Lake Jugla. Reserve four full city days, excluding arrival and departure. This is a Riga-focused stage within a longer Latvia or Baltic trip.

If your dates are 15–18 November 2026, plan around opening days before choosing the order of the sights. Staro Rīga is confirmed for this period, but the Ethnographic Museum lists closure on the 18th, and both museums on the art nouveau day close on Mondays. The suggested sequence therefore starts in Jugla and leaves the Old Town for the last day, with indoor visits confirmed beforehand.

  • For 15–18 November 2026: Jugla on Sunday, market and history on Monday, art nouveau on Tuesday and the Old Town on Wednesday.
  • For other dates: keep these outing clusters and adapt their order to opening days.
  • If Sunday is rainy, consider swapping Jugla for the art museums and leaving the outdoor outing for Tuesday.

Arrive without a car and choose a base fitting your outings

Without a car, bus 22 connects the airport and centre, including Autoosta and Centrāltirgus on its route. Boarding is in car park P1 between arrivals exits E and C. Buy a ticket in advance if you wish; payment to the driver is by card. For travellers with luggage wanting accommodation-door drop-off, taxis or ride-hailing are alternatives.

Compare Old Town accommodation with the area around Elizabetes iela. The first suits Rātslaukums, St Peter's and festival evenings; the second fits a day around Alberta iela, the National Museum of Art and LIDO Vērmanītis. Choose by exact address and routes to outings, rather than relying solely on a neighbourhood name in the listing.

Walking within each central cluster helps you notice façades and take breaks. For Jugla, consult Rīgas Satiksme's bus, tram and trolleybus network from your accommodation. Check the day's route and validate your ticket when boarding.

Old Town: façades, interiors and a Baltic meal

Start at Rātslaukums in front of the House of the Black Heads, at number 7 on the square. Take time to look at the façade; you can also visit the interiors and use an audio guide available in nine languages. One detail changes how you see the building: it was destroyed and later reconstructed, so it is not an entirely preserved medieval structure.

For food, choose Milda at Grēcinieku iela 26. Baltic cooking is the reason to include it, while its location lets you sit down without leaving the Old Town. The restaurant lists Monday closure; check service, menu and reservations for your date, particularly if following the itinerary on 18 November.

Continue to St Peter's Church at Reformācijas laukums 1. Its viewing platform is 57 metres high, offering Old Town and Daugava views; the interior contains historic elements and hosts exhibitions. Continue through Doma laukums and the Three Brothers without making the afternoon a race between façades.

For an indoor visit instead of the platform, the National History Museum receives visitors at Riga Castle, Pils laukums 3, entering via Daugavas gāte. It fits with Doma laukums and the Three Brothers but closes Mondays. For 18 November, confirm opening before making the substitution your main plan.

Art nouveau outside and in, followed by Latvian art

On Alberta iela, look for faces, floral reliefs and figures high on the façades. The buildings date from 1901 to 1908, with eight recognised as national architectural monuments. Extend the walk to Strēlnieku iela and observe the decoration at number 4a. The appeal lies in comparing details, without feeling that every façade needs to become a lesson.

The Art Nouveau Museum at Alberta iela 12 completes the outing. In architect Konstantīns Pēkšēns' former apartment, it presents restored 1903 interiors, domestic rooms and period objects. After looking at windows from outside, discover how a residence was organised.

After the Art Nouveau Museum, lunch at LIDO Vērmanītis, Elizabetes iela 65. Its central location fits a meal between architecture and an art afternoon; choose from the day's offerings and give your legs a rest. Then visit the National Museum of Art and select rooms of painting, prints and sculpture to explore Latvian art slowly.

Both the Art Nouveau Museum and National Museum of Art list Monday closure. Within the festival dates, Tuesday 17 November is suggested. If two interior visits seem too much, keep the Art Nouveau Museum and explore Alberta iela and Strēlnieku iela at a slower pace.

Central Market: a morning among pavilions and flavours

Reserve a morning for Central Market, Nēģu iela 7, near the rail and bus stations and Old Town. Its five pavilions reuse airship hangar structures. Architecture alone merits entering, while food vendors add another dimension: observe stalls, compare displays and choose what you would like to try.

For lunch, stay in the market's food area. Look around the day's options and choose where to sit, making the meal part of the pavilion visit. Continue to the Museum of the Occupation's main exhibition, Latviešu strēlnieku laukums 1, devoting the afternoon to Latvia's recent history.

The pavilions close on each month's first Monday for cleaning. Monday 16 November 2026 is not covered by that rule, but check operating notices before visiting.

Understand recent history and finish the afternoon by the canal

After Central Market, visit the Museum of the Occupation's main exhibition at Latviešu strēlnieku laukums 1. Its collection covers Latvia under Soviet and Nazi regimes between 1940 and 1991, including repression, deportations and resistance. Donated objects and personal testimonies bring that history closer for newcomers to the country.

This visit needs attention. We suggest not scheduling another exhibition immediately afterwards: walk to Bastejkalns beside the Freedom Monument and follow the canal, bridges and paths between benches and sculptures. The interval gives the afternoon breathing room before a possible festival evening.

Use the main exhibition's address when planning transport. The former KGB headquarters at Brīvības iela 61 is another venue, with separate conditions and listed closure on 18 November. This itinerary chooses the exhibition near the Old Town.

Jugla: rural buildings and a generous portion of the day outdoors

The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum changes the scale of the trip. Beside Lake Jugla, it occupies approximately 87 hectares and brings together more than a hundred historical buildings moved from different regions of Latvia. They represent rural life from the late 17th century to the 1930s. Allow the morning and part of the afternoon: the appeal is walking between the groups of buildings and noticing differences in construction and use.

For November, confirm hours and accessible interiors on +371 67994515, because seasonal information conflicts. Buildings listed for winter visits include the Kurzeme house and wagon shelter, Jaunsaimniecība, the Lurķi fishermen's house and the Old Believers' property in the Latgale ensemble. Ask at the ticket office which are open that day and arrange the walk around them.

The entrance is at Brīvdabas iela 21. The museum lists trolleybus 31 and buses 28 and 29, alighting at Brīvdabas muzejs. Use the planner from your accommodation to find necessary connections rather than assuming direct service from anywhere central.

For a trip from 15 to 18 November 2026, go on Sunday the 15th, with Tuesday the 17th as a possible swap with the art nouveau day. Closure is listed on the 18th. On returning to the centre, eat at LIDO Vērmanītis, Elizabetes iela 65, and rest at your accommodation before heading out to the festival.

Staro Rīga: lights from 15 to 18 November 2026

If you are in Riga from 15 to 18 November 2026, set aside an evening for Staro Rīga. Confirmed in the official calendar, the festival runs from 17:00 to 23:00 with free admission, adding light installations and projections to walks around the city. The edition has the theme unum momentum and covers Mūkusalas, Spīķeri, the Old Town and central parks.

We suggest the Old Town segment the first evening and Spīķeri for a second outing. This lets you enjoy the festival without crossing every area after a museum day. Consult the official map to choose installations and starting point; do not expect projections on every famous building.

On Jugla day, eat and rest before going back out. On Old Town day, you will already recognise part of the area from the daytime walk. Equally, reserve just one festival evening and leave the others for leisurely dinners and rest.

Turn the itinerary into a travel checklist

Once you have arranged the outings, open Mala Inteligente and enter the total trip duration, including arrival and departure. You can use Frio/Inverno (Cold/Winter) as the starting profile and review the list for walks on Alberta iela, time outdoors in Jugla and evening outings to Staro Rīga. Adjust the checklist based on the forecast shortly before departure.

Before closing your suitcase, check routes between accommodation and Brīvdabas muzejs and save chosen meal addresses. For the budget, gather prices for accommodation, transport, meals and admissions on your dates; generic references in reais do not represent Riga prices.

Questions to help you decide

Do the four days include arrival and departure?

This itinerary uses four whole sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. It focuses on Riga including Jugla, rather than covering Latvia or the Baltic countries in full.

When is Staro Rīga 2026?

The official programme confirms 15–18 November 2026, 17:00–23:00, with free admission. We suggest an Old Town evening and, if you have energy, another in Spīķeri, consulting the official installation map.

Can I visit the Ethnographic Museum on 18 November?

The official tourism page lists closure on 18 November. For 15–18 November 2026, reserve Sunday the 15th or Tuesday the 17th and confirm hours and accessible buildings with the museum.

What can I do in Riga on a Monday?

Combine Central Market, the Museum of the Occupation's main exhibition and Bastejkalns. The Art Nouveau Museum, National Museum of Art, National History Museum and Milda list Monday closure. Market pavilions close on the month's first Monday; 16 November 2026 is not that date.

Do I need to rent a car?

Combine walks between central attractions with buses, trams and trolleybuses. For the Ethnographic Museum, check the route from accommodation to Brīvdabas muzejs. Bus 22 connects airport and centre; taxis or ride-hailing offer door-to-door alternatives.

Where can I fit a Baltic meal?

Milda, Grēcinieku iela 26, offers Baltic cooking and suits the Old Town day. For another local food experience, explore Central Market vendors and food areas. Consult the day's menus without counting on a particular dish.
