GETTING STARTED

Four full days combining the Public Market, MARGS, Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana, the Guaíba waterfront, Parcão, Fundação Iberê, Redenção and PUCRS, with stops at Gambrinus and Café Iberê. The Book Fair, held from 30 October to 15 November 2026, forms part of the visit to Praça da Alfândega. Arrival and departure are outside these four days.

Who it is for: First-time visitors to Porto Alegre wanting literature, art, parks and food breaks across four full days, excluding arrival and departure.

Four full days, with books along the way

Four days in Porto Alegre allow for an enjoyable mix: browsing market and book stalls, discovering the stories of writers and musicians, visiting museums and walking by the Guaíba. The itinerary runs from Thursday to Sunday, with arrival and departure excluded. This gives you four full days of sightseeing without having to fit a visit around your flight.

For the 72nd Book Fair, choose dates between 30 October and 15 November 2026. It takes place in Praça da Alfândega with free cultural programming and listed hours of 10:00–20:00. The periods 5–8 or 12–15 November 2026 fit the four suggested days. The fair pairs especially well with MARGS in the same square and extends the trip’s literary element.

The sequence also respects Fundação Iberê’s Thursday-to-Sunday opening. Hours used here were consulted on 13 October 2026; check official pages shortly before travel and arrange visits around your chosen fair activities.

Explore market stalls and lunch at Gambrinus

Start Thursday at the Public Market. Founded in 1869, it has over a hundred stalls with fish, fruit, meat, natural products, chimarrão items and religious goods. Explore the corridors and notice the mixture: everyday shopping introduces part of the city without requiring a ready-made purchase list.

Lunch suggestion: Gambrinus at number 85 inside the market. The restaurant states it was founded in 1889 and serves Brazilian cooking with Portuguese influence. It keeps you at the address just explored and avoids a lunch hunt before the cultural afternoon. Check the menu and confirm your date’s hours.

Then head to Praça da Alfândega, home to MARGS and, during the event, the Book Fair. Grouping these keeps day one central with fewer inter-neighbourhood journeys.

From art to books in Praça da Alfândega

In Praça da Alfândega, start at MARGS with exhibitions across two floors. Admission is free; listed opening is Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–19:00, last access 18:00. Leave time for galleries and works catching your attention; the bookshop/shop can complete the visit.

Then continue to the 72nd Book Fair. The change happens within the square: museum galleries to books and cultural programming. Choose activities for your dates on the official site, also leaving time to browse freely. Arrange MARGS before or after timed sessions, respecting last admission.

The café indicated by the museum is a possible route break; check service while visiting. Outside 30 October–15 November 2026, keep MARGS exhibitions and bookshop/shop as the afternoon programme.

If the forecast already shows Friday rain, save MARGS for after Casa de Cultura that day. Thursday then has market, Gambrinus and a longer fair afternoon without repeating the museum.

Discover Quintana, Oliveira Silveira and Elis at Casa de Cultura

On Friday, visit Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana at Rua dos Andradas, 736. Admission is free Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–20:00, including public holidays. Start in the morning and notice the building too: the pink dome with Hotel Majestic lettering in the photograph deserves attention.

Make Obra do Poeta and Quarto do Poeta your first pair. Reopened in July 2026, Obra do Poeta presents Quintana’s biography, journalism, translation and literary creation. Quarto do Poeta reconstructs room 217 with personal objects. Together they connect the writer’s work and everyday life.

Continue to Memorial Oliveira Silveira on the east wing’s fifth floor, with publications, reports, objects and a documentary. Then Memorial Elis Regina brings music through records, photographs and objects. These four spaces fill the morning and leave the afternoon for Guaíba waterfront — or MARGS if swapped for rain.

Walk beside the Guaíba around Gasômetro

After Casa de Cultura and lunch, head to the Guaíba waterfront around Usina do Gasômetro. Still connected to the Historic Centre, the outing changes pace: walk, observe the water and pause without rushing to another museum.

The waterfront combines leisure, sport, culture and spaces for socialising. The plan here is to enjoy the outdoor public space, without visiting the inside of the Usina. If you want to continue walking until sunset, decide according to conditions that day.

For Friday rain, move Thursday’s MARGS visit to after Casa de Cultura. You gain an indoor afternoon without repeating the museum. If Saturday clears, walk around Gasômetro in the morning instead of Parcão, then travel to Fundação Iberê.

Find the windmill and walk through Parcão

Saturday starts at Parque Moinhos de Vento, Parcão, Rua Comendador Caminha, s/n. Its 11.5 hectares include walking areas, sports facilities and an Azorean-inspired windmill. Walk around and find the mill: it gives exploration a concrete reference without turning the morning into a string of commitments.

If you are staying in the centre, this is also an opportunity to explore another part of the city. After the walk and lunch, take transport to Fundação Iberê on Avenida Padre Cacique. The two outings are in different areas, so check the route and allow time for the journey.

For more literature during event dates, replace Parcão with another Book Fair morning. Keep the Fundação afternoon so returning to the square adds books without removing architecture and art.

Observe Fundação Iberê’s architecture and enter the exhibitions

At Fundação Iberê, Avenida Padre Cacique, 2000, begin with the building itself. Curves, white volume and zigzag external ramps appear in the archival photograph and give architecture a concrete role in the outing. On arrival, observe how these elements combine on the façade before entering.

Then spend time with current exhibitions. Check the programme for your dates beforehand to choose what to see and how long to allow inside. Building and exhibitions shift the focus from Casa de Cultura and MARGS, deserving an afternoon without another distant museum afterwards. Visits run Thursday to Sunday from 14:00, last admission 18:00.

Café Iberê rounds off the visit at the same address with drinks, cakes and savoury snacks. The institution lists service from Thursday to Sunday, 13:30–19:00. You could arrive for a coffee before going in or have a snack after the exhibitions; have lunch before travelling there and confirm the café’s hours shortly before your trip.

Fundação admission is free on Thursdays; Friday to Sunday requires tickets. To use free admission, swap entire Saturday and Thursday: Parcão and Fundação first, with market, Gambrinus, MARGS and Book Fair together on Saturday.

Open Sunday with a Redenção walk

On Sunday, start at Parque Farroupilha, better known as Redenção. Its 37.5 hectares of green space host leisure, sport and social activities. Devote the morning to walking and resting among trees: after three days of cultural content, leave some hours to enjoy the park.

The walk itself is the programme, without needing an event or fair to justify visiting. Then allow lunch and travel to Partenon for PUCRS’s Museum of Science and Technology. The change adds variety to the final day: greenery in the morning, interactive experiences in the afternoon.

For Sunday rain, bring Redenção forward to Saturday morning instead of Parcão. Start PUCRS at 10:00 Sunday and enjoy the extra museum time.

Finish with interactive experiences at PUCRS

The afternoon is for PUCRS’s Museum of Science and Technology, Avenida Ipiranga, 6681, building 40, Partenon. Listed Saturday and Sunday hours are 10:00–18:00. Leave Redenção with time for lunch, travel and museum exploration before closing.

Participating in interactive experiences is part of this visit. After literature, music and visual arts, you encounter another way to learn, also suited to a family outing. Allow time to try and observe rather than rush past everything.

The institution also maintains scientific fossil, biodiversity and archaeological collections; not all research material is necessarily exhibited. Check admission conditions on the official site. Mandatory advance booking is stated for schools and institutions.

Choose accommodation around the route

For this itinerary, the Historic Centre is the first base suggestion: Public Market, MARGS, Book Fair and Casa de Cultura are concentrated there. Moinhos de Vento suits anyone wanting Parcão nearby and accepting transport to the centre. Before booking, compare the exact address with outings; neighbourhood name alone does not tell you how far you will walk.

Walk nearby central sections and reserve transport for neighbourhood changes. The city government directs route and timetable searches to linhas.eptc.com.br and apps such as Cittamobi and Moovit. Check routes for your travel date, especially Fundação Iberê and PUCRS days.

Flights arrive at Salgado Filho Airport in Anchieta. The official site provides flight searches and a route-planning option. Plan transport to accommodation and keep arrival and departure outside the four days to avoid losing a sightseeing morning to flight timing.

Pack and budget for your itinerary

With dates chosen, use Mala Inteligente for your checklist. Consider walks in the centre, parks and waterfront plus arrival and departure days. Start with comfortable footwear and rain protection, adjusting the rest to the forecast shortly before travel.

In the Travel Calculator, enter Porto Alegre, the total number of days in your stay and the number of people. Compare the Backpacking, Comfort and Luxury options for reference figures for accommodation, meals and transport, with a 15% buffer. The result is an illustrative estimate in reais rather than a price quote.

Check Fundação Iberê and PUCRS museum tickets separately and add them to your plans. Count the whole city stay, including arrival and departure days.

Questions to help you decide

When is Porto Alegre’s Book Fair in 2026?

The 72nd edition is confirmed from 30 October to 15 November 2026 in Praça da Alfândega. Organisers state free cultural programming and hours of 10:00–20:00. Check the official site to choose activities for your trip.

How can I combine the Book Fair with other outings?

Start at the Public Market, lunch at Gambrinus and continue to MARGS. Save the rest of the afternoon for the fair in the museum’s square. Arrange MARGS around any timed literary activity.

Do the four days include flights?

No. These are four full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. The itinerary combines varied first-visit experiences without exhausting Porto Alegre.

Which days of the week best fit the itinerary?

Thursday to Sunday makes Fundação Iberê and other cultural spaces easier to combine. For the Book Fair too, two possibilities are 5–8 or 12–15 November 2026.

Do I need to hire a car?

Walk nearby central stretches and use transport between neighbourhoods. Check current routes through municipal channels. Parcão, Fundação Iberê and PUCRS require separate journeys in your planning.

Is the centre or Moinhos de Vento better for a stay?

The Historic Centre favours both days concentrated there. Moinhos de Vento suits anyone wanting Parcão nearby and willing to travel to the centre. Compare exact accommodation addresses with itinerary places before booking.

How can I rearrange the itinerary for rain?

If Friday rain is forecast, move MARGS from Thursday to after Casa de Cultura and use Thursday afternoon for the fair. The waterfront can replace Parcão on Saturday morning. For Sunday rain, bring Redenção forward to Saturday morning and extend PUCRS on Sunday.
