GETTING STARTED

Stay in the centre to combine Mercado Central, Imperatriz Doces Finos, Museu do Doce, the cathedral and MALG over the first two days. Reserve the third for Santo Antônio and Valverde in Laranjal, and consider Charqueada São João if the historical visit justifies admission and transport. Arrival and departure are excluded from the three days.

Who it is for: Travellers wanting to combine walks through central Pelotas, free museums, sweets and Laranjal’s waterfront while watching spending.

Three days with the centre as your base

You can arrange three very different days in Pelotas without spending the time going back and forth: two in the centre among the market, sweets, a historic mansion and art; the third on Laranjal’s waterfront. We suggest staying in the centre and linking nearby visits on foot. Museu do Doce and Museu de Arte Leopoldo Gotuzzo provide two stops with confirmed free admission.

This itinerary allows three full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. It is an urban selection with an outing to Lagoa dos Patos, without trying to cover the whole rural area. Charqueada São João is a paid choice: it makes sense when learning about charque history matters more than spending the entire day on the waterfront.

Before distributing outings, look at the days of the week. Museu do Doce opens Tuesday to Saturday; MALG’s listing states Tuesday to Sunday, with hours needing confirmation. The order below is a suggestion: adjust whole days to the calendar and weather, keeping outings in the same area together.

Where to stay to make journeys work better

For this itinerary, look for central accommodation and check its relationship on the map with Praça Coronel Pedro Osório and Praça Sete de Julho. They help locate the core of the first two days’ outings. The advantage is reducing transport needs between visits; this does not guarantee the lowest nightly rate, so compare accommodation and journeys together.

Staying in Laranjal better suits those prioritising the waterfront and willing to leave it for museum visits. As the area is approximately 12 km from the historic centre, a room-rate difference may lose force when journeys are added. Viajandar’s Pelotas page lets you continue looking for local services and places to stay.

If arriving by air, the airport is around 8 km from the centre. The operator lists line 3561, Getúlio Vargas via Aeroporto, with a stop approximately 300 metres from the entrance. Compare it with a taxi or ride-hailing, considering luggage and the line’s actual operating times; the source does not confirm frequency or fare for your arrival.

Day 1: Mercado Central and a stop at Imperatriz

Begin the first day at Praça Coronel Pedro Osório and continue to Mercado Central at Praça Sete de Julho, 179. It is a good introduction to the outing because it combines sweets, crafts, colonial-style products, bars and restaurants. You can explore the stalls and fit in a meal without opening another route across the city.

For a break at a specific address, go to Imperatriz Doces Finos at market shops 39 and 40. The business presents its production of traditional Pelotas sweets and invites visits. Choose from what is available that day and budget for this stop: afterwards, Museu do Doce helps put the tradition in context.

We suggest lunch at Mercado Central itself, choosing among open establishments, followed by the museum in the afternoon. The market publishes Monday-to-Saturday opening, 09:00–19:30; each stall may have its own hours.

An afternoon at Museu do Doce

In the afternoon, return to Praça Coronel Pedro Osório and enter UFPel’s Museu do Doce at number 8. Housed in a 19th-century mansion, it works with the memory of sweet-making traditions, including fine and colonial-style sweets. Combining it with the market gives the outing a theme: you move from choosing a sweet to production history.

The official listing states free admission and visits Tuesday to Saturday, 13:00–18:00. Mediated visits require booking. Do not count on an included tasting: the food stop is at the sweet shop, while the proposal here is to explore sweet-making memory and the space housing it.

Day 2: paintings and stained glass at the cathedral

On the second day, begin at Catedral Metropolitana São Francisco de Paula, Praça José Bonifácio, 15. Reasons to enter include Aldo Locatelli’s paintings, decoration also involving Emílio Sessa and Adolfo Gardoni, and stained glass. The visit fits well with MALG: the day moves through art in a religious space and then a museum’s collections.

The official page publishes visiting hours Monday to Friday, 10:00–18:00, and Saturday, 14:00–17:00. If your second day falls on Saturday, reverse the sequence and leave the cathedral for the afternoon, provided MALG’s morning opening is confirmed. Check any charge and respect services; the outing assumes neither crypt access nor upper areas.

Continue through MALG’s collections

After the cathedral, continue to Museu de Arte Leopoldo Gotuzzo at Praça Sete de Julho, 180. Admission is free, and the collection preserves the artist’s works and objects alongside visual art collections and temporary exhibitions. It is a chance to devote part of the day to art without adding another ticket to the budget.

The address also lets you use Mercado Central for lunch before or after the visit. This settles the meal in the museum’s area without creating an outing just to eat. Confirm MALG hours directly before finalising the sequence: the listing publishes Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–19:30, but other announcements give different periods.

If the forecast is poor for Laranjal, this cathedral-and-MALG day can swap with the waterfront outing. Make the change before leaving and respect both opening schedules; this avoids reaching the lagoon, giving up because of rain and paying for another journey back.

During the book fair, return to the square

Will you travel between 30 October and 15 November 2026? The 52ª Feira do Livro de Pelotas is confirmed at Praça Coronel Pedro Osório. We suggest returning to the square after the museums: the fair adds a book-related outing without requiring travel to another area.

The official announcement names Izamir de Farias as patron and Gilberto Isquierdo as orator. Consult the programme to choose times and activities; the news does not confirm specific sessions or free admission to the entire programme. Consultation of the general calendar did not provide enough information to list other events, so it does not indicate an absence of attractions on other dates.

Day 3: walk around Santo Antônio and Valverde

Reserve the third day for a change of scene: leave the centre and go to Lagoa dos Patos’s shore at Laranjal. We suggest beginning on Santo Antônio’s waterfront and continuing in Valverde, adjusting the walk’s length to your energy. Leave Totó and Colônia Z3 for another part of the trip; adding all these areas weakens the idea of an unhurried outing.

For bus travel, official guidance indicates boarding at Praça Piratinino de Almeida via Rua Barão de Santa Tecla. The Santo Antônio/Valverde line serves Avenida Dr. Antônio Augusto de Assumpção. Check the best stop for the stretch you plan to walk and return travel before leaving, without relying on a fixed journey duration.

Trapiche do Valverde is a reference for organising this part of the outing, but its mention on the tourism page does not establish current access to the structure. Enjoy the waterfront walk without depending on it. This itinerary also assumes neither swimming nor nautical activities.

As the research did not verify a food establishment in Laranjal, bring water and a snack for the walk and leave budget room to choose a meal locally. Avoid returning to the centre just for lunch: the idea is to complete the Laranjal outing in one go.

When Charqueada São João is worth paying for

Charqueada São João at Estrada da Costa, 750, deserves consideration when you want to explore charque history more deeply. The supervised visit covers the mansion with historic furniture and objects, gardens and the surviving façade of the enslaved people’s quarters. When viewing the ensemble, do not limit interpretation to the owners’ spaces: the quarters also put enslavement at the centre of this history.

There is a charge and a reservation request. Before replacing the Laranjal morning with the charqueada, check the price and decide how to arrive and leave. Compare the visit plus transport cost. If your main interest is walking beside the lagoon, keep Santo Antônio and Valverde; if the property’s history is a priority, the supervised visit may justify this paid choice.

Combining the charqueada in the morning and Laranjal in the afternoon is a suggestion conditional on journeys you can arrange, not an outing with a guaranteed connection. With travel settled, choose one stretch of Santo Antônio or Valverde for the afternoon rather than compensating for the morning by covering the entire waterfront.

Do not count on lunch or a boat included in basic admission. Lunch requires a minimum group of 20 people and a link with a visit or outing; the boat package requires at least 10. The establishment allows enquiries about spaces in existing groups, but this needs arranging in advance.

Finalise the budget and prepare your luggage

To organise spending, separate accommodation, food, arrival and departure transport, the Laranjal outing and sweet purchases. Add Charqueada São João if choosing the visit, using the price actually provided by the establishment. Possible savings in this itinerary come from using the two free admissions and avoiding scattered journeys, without promising a cheap trip.

In Calculadora de Custos de Viagem, enter destination, days, people and style for an initial estimate in reais, with accommodation, food and transport references and a 15% margin. The result is not a quotation. Compare it with prices you obtain and count nights and arrival and departure journeys, which are outside the three sightseeing days.

Then turn the sequence into a checklist in Mala Inteligente. Adjust duration and travellers to the whole trip and select the climate based on the forecast close to departure. For this selection, we suggest remembering items you use for city and waterfront walks, plus water and an extra layer according to the forecast; the tool’s selectors are not a weather forecast.

Which option suits you?

OptionA good fit if…What to consider
Accommodation in the centreYou want to follow this itinerary with two days devoted to central attractions. It favours walking between sights and concentrates Laranjal transport in one outing. Compare the exact address and total stay cost.
Accommodation in LaranjalYou give more importance to the waterfront and intend to spend longer in Laranjal. It requires planning journeys to museums and other attractions in the centre, approximately 12 km away.
Museu do Doce and Museu de Arte Leopoldo GotuzzoYou want to explore sweet-making traditions and visual arts without spending on these admissions. Both have free entry, but the sequence depends on opening days. MALG hours need direct confirmation.
Santo Antônio and Valverde on the third dayYou prefer walking beside Lagoa dos Patos and keeping the third day less structured. It makes use of a single outing from the centre, but this outdoor visit depends on weather. The itinerary assumes neither swimming nor pier access.
Charqueada São João in the morningYou are interested in charque history and want a supervised visit to the mansion and property spaces. There is a charge, booking is needed and transport must be arranged. Combining it with Laranjal in the afternoon only makes sense if journeys are settled.

Your itinerary, ready to save

Day 1 — morning and lunch

Begin at Praça Coronel Pedro Osório and continue to Mercado Central at Praça Sete de Julho. Explore stalls and consider lunch at the market according to open establishments. Take a sweet break at Imperatriz Doces Finos, shops 39 and 40.

Prefer an alternative? If Museu do Doce is closed that day, keep the square and Mercado Central walk and move the museum to an afternoon between Tuesday and Saturday.

Day 1 — afternoon

Visit Museu do Doce at Praça Coronel Pedro Osório, 8. The listing states free admission and Tuesday-to-Saturday opening, 13:00–18:00. The visit connects the sweet-shop stop with sweet-making traditions’ memory.

Prefer an alternative? If this afternoon does not match Museu do Doce opening, visit MALG if its opening is confirmed and swap the museums’ order.

Day 2 — morning

Explore Catedral São Francisco de Paula at Praça José Bonifácio, 15, during tourist visiting hours. Pay attention to paintings and stained glass; Monday to Friday the official page publishes visits 10:00–18:00.

Prefer an alternative? On Saturday, put MALG in the morning after confirming opening and leave the cathedral for its published visiting window, 14:00–17:00.

Day 2 — afternoon

Continue to Museu de Arte Leopoldo Gotuzzo at Praça Sete de Julho, 180, with free admission. Explore works and objects linked to the artist and exhibitions available on your date. Mercado Central allows a meal to fit this part of the route.

Prefer an alternative? From 30 October to 15 November 2026, include the 52ª Feira do Livro at Praça Coronel Pedro Osório after the museum according to the daily programme.

Day 3 — morning

Leave the centre for Laranjal and begin walking along Santo Antônio’s waterfront. For bus travel, consult the Santo Antônio/Valverde line and confirm boarding and return stops.

Prefer an alternative? With booking and transport settled, replace the waterfront morning with the supervised Charqueada São João visit at Estrada da Costa, 750.

Day 3 — afternoon

Continue in Valverde and use Trapiche do Valverde as a reference without depending on structure access. If you visited the charqueada in the morning, concentrate the afternoon on one waterfront stretch according to arranged transport rather than trying to cover everything.

Prefer an alternative? If rain is forecast, swap Laranjal day with the cathedral-and-MALG day, respecting both opening schedules, and reserve the best weather window for the waterfront.

Before you go

  • Count three full sightseeing days with arrival and departure outside the programme, and check how many nights your trip requires.
  • Distribute museums across the calendar: Museu do Doce Tuesday to Saturday; MALG with day and time directly confirmed.
  • Check cathedral tourist visiting hours, especially Saturdays, and any charge. Do not use service times as a visiting guarantee.
  • Check Imperatriz Doces Finos and chosen food establishments’ hours; general market hours do not automatically apply to every shop.
  • Before leaving for Laranjal, confirm the Santo Antônio/Valverde line, stops and return times. Choose the day with the forecast in mind.
  • For Charqueada São João, obtain the price, reservation and visiting conditions and define arrival and departure routes.
  • If travelling between 30 October and 15 November 2026, consult the 52ª Feira do Livro programme to fit an activity into the central outing.
  • Compare accommodation by address and total cost including expected journeys, without assuming one area is always cheaper.
  • Use actual prices obtained for accommodation, transport and the paid visit to review the budget estimate.

Questions to help you decide

Can I follow the itinerary without a car?

You can concentrate the first two days on central walks and use transport for Laranjal. Official information indicates the Santo Antônio/Valverde line, boarding at Praça Piratinino de Almeida via Rua Barão de Santa Tecla. Check times and return travel before leaving. For Charqueada São João, arrange transport separately.

Which visits have confirmed free admission?

Museu do Doce and Museu de Arte Leopoldo Gotuzzo have free admission recorded in official listings. The cathedral source does not confirm free entry, and Charqueada São João charges for visits. Sweets and meals are separate budget items.

How can I adapt the three days if they include a Monday?

Museu do Doce lists Tuesday-to-Saturday opening, 13:00–18:00. MALG’s listing publishes Tuesday-to-Sunday visits, but announced hours differ. Avoid leaving both museums for Monday; use it for Mercado Central or Laranjal according to the weather and redistribute visits.

When is Charqueada São João worth paying for?

Consider it when charque history is a priority and you want a supervised visit to the mansion, gardens and surviving façade of the enslaved people’s quarters. Check the price, book and add transport before deciding. For waterfront enthusiasts, devoting the day to Santo Antônio and Valverde is a coherent choice.

Does the charqueada outing include lunch or a boat?

Do not count on it in basic admission. The business lists lunch for groups of at least 20 people linked to a visit or outing and a boat package for at least 10. You can enquire about spaces in existing groups without guaranteed availability.

Is there a confirmed event to combine with the itinerary?

The 52ª Feira do Livro is confirmed from 30 October to 15 November 2026 at Praça Coronel Pedro Osório. During that period it fits the return to the square after museums. Consult the official programme to choose activities and times.
