Nantes in five days: castle, art, gardens and a crossing to Trentemoult
Five full days in Nantes: castle, Machines de l’île, museums, gardens, meals and Navibus to Trentemoult, with alternatives and the 2026 calendar.

GETTING STARTED
Combine the castle and Bouffay, Machines de l’île, Jardin des Plantes and Musée d’arts, Passage Pommeraye and Graslin, then finish with Navibus to Trentemoult and Jardin Extraordinaire. These are five full days with arrival and departure separate, two verified meal suggestions and alternatives for adjusting the sequence.
Who it is for: Brazilian travellers on a first visit to Nantes, with five full sightseeing days and an interest in history, art, gardens, gastronomy and boat crossings, without relying on a car.Five days to explore Nantes’s interiors and riverbanks
Five full days let you enter the castle, discover the inventions of Machines de l’île, visit museums and gardens and cross the Loire to Trentemoult without turning Nantes into a series of quick stops. We suggest a different combination each day: history and Bouffay; machines and shipyard; botany and art; Pommeraye and Graslin; a crossing and a garden in the former quarry.
Arrival and departure are excluded. Think of Nantes as one stage of a trip around France, with time for a sit-down meal and indoor visits. The order is flexible: outside July and August, castle interiors close on Mondays, and Musée d’arts closes on Tuesdays. Arrange these two days first, then distribute the others around them.
Arrive and get around without relying on a car
If arriving by air, begin by comparing your accommodation’s location with the shuttle stops: Hôtel Dieu, Cité des Congrès and the railway station. Since 30 March 2026, the station stop has been at quai A of Gare Routière. Naolib also lists regular public transport alternatives, including line 38 via Pirmil; with luggage, consider the transfer before choosing.
For sightseeing, combine walking with the local network. Passerelle Schœlcher is a recommended route to Machines on foot from the centre; line 5 to Prairie au Duc is another option. On the Trentemoult day, the boat is part of the outing itself. Check routes and timetables for your travel date, especially around works, rather than relying on old schedules.
A base that makes your days easier
Here, comfort begins with the address. I suggest looking around Bouffay if you want to prioritise the castle and historic centre; near Graslin if you prefer combining Passage Pommeraye with meals in the area; or by the station if arrival and departure by train matter most.
The station’s north exit is about 700 metres from the castle, a useful reference for comparing addresses. Use the decision table to choose an area, then check the exact route between your accommodation, arrival stop and sights. These are location criteria rather than assessments of individual hotels or promises of quiet surroundings.
Castle and Bouffay: begin with the city’s history
Begin at Château des ducs de Bretagne on place Marc Elder and allow time for Musée d’histoire de Nantes. Going inside the museum helps you understand the city before walking around Bouffay. Afterwards, explore the freely accessible courtyard, walls and moat garden; interiors and exhibitions require a separate visit.
If your dates coincide, include Expression(s) décoloniale(s) #4, confirmed from 8 May to 8 November 2026. The exhibition brings art and documents together to explore Nantes’s colonial and slave-trading past. Rosana Paulino’s participation, with works also connected to Afro-Brazilian women, creates a particularly relevant connection for visitors from Brazil.
Continue through Bouffay’s streets after the castle, making this the least structured part of the day. Watch the calendar: outside July and August, interiors close on Mondays, and the site lists venue closure on 1 November. In those cases, bring Pommeraye and Graslin forward and save the complete castle visit for another day.

Allow time to discover the history inside the castle before walking its walls.

Devote day two to Machines de l’île and Parc des Chantiers. Begin with Galerie des Machines, adjusting the order to the time you obtain for Grand Éléphant. Watching the machine and riding it are different experiences: if the elephant ride is a priority, organise the rest of the day around that booking.
Carrousel des Mondes Marins beside the Loire deserves its own stage. Gallery, elephant and carousel should not be treated as automatically included in one ticket. Make your choices before visiting and allow a lunch break between them rather than booking back-to-back activities.
Then walk through Parc des Chantiers. To understand its past, Maison des Hommes et des techniques in the former shipyard explores shipbuilding and working-class cultures. It can complement the park or replace some outdoor time, depending on opening. Back in the centre, we suggest La Cigale on place Graslin for dinner; check service and reservations.

Elephant, gallery and carousel each deserve a separate stage on your Machines de l’île day.

Begin day three at Jardin des Plantes on rue Stanislas Baudry. Historic trees, botanical collections and greenhouses provide plenty to discover on the walk; rest areas allow a break before the museum. Camellias are part of the collection, but do not count on a particular flowering display without checking the season.
Greenhouse visiting arrangements vary: the one on the palm island is freely accessible, others require a code obtained at reception and some are visited with a guide. Choose what suits that day, then continue to Musée d’arts near the garden. Its collections range from old to contemporary art, so allow a generous part of the afternoon to look at the works.
From 30 January 2026 to 3 January 2027, Plants and People adds a common thread: the Musée d’arts section explores plants in historic and contemporary works. The animal section is at Frac in Carquefou and is not included in this day. The museum closes on Tuesdays and offers evening opening on Thursdays, an option for a longer break between garden and art.
Passage Pommeraye and Graslin, with a leisurely meal break
On day four, enter Passage Pommeraye to admire the architecture. The covered 19th-century arcade connects three levels via a monumental staircase; it is worth exploring even if you do not plan to shop. With both shops and residents in the complex, be mindful of its everyday use as you walk through.
La Passagère, a restaurant and tea room at 1 rue du Puits d’Argent, offers a break within the complex itself. Its website presents lunch, pâtisserie, coffee and tea. We suggest lunch there if you want to stay in the Passage, or a tea break before continuing to place Graslin.
On the square, La Cigale is at number 4 opposite the opera house. Its historic décor is part of the brasserie experience; it also presents itself as a café and tea room. It suits a more leisurely meal on this day. You need not fit in two meals: choose one venue for lunch and leave the other as a possible break after checking hours.

At Passage Pommeraye, begin with the architecture and perhaps continue with a meal or drink.

After Pommeraye and Graslin, head to Mémorial de l’abolition de l’esclavage on quai de la Fosse. The routes explore Nantes’s slave-trading history, including plaques with ship names and references to expeditions. The visit develops themes introduced at the castle and deserves time for reading.
This combination continues the first day’s themes, now beside the Loire. If you already know the memorial and want more time in museums, an alternative is Musée Dobrée, whose complex includes the palace and manoir de la Touche. Choose this substitution according to opening rather than adding another lengthy indoor visit at the end of an already full day.
Trentemoult: cross the Loire and continue through the streets
On day five, go to Gare Maritime and take N1 to Trentemoult Sablières. The crossing brings you to Trentemoult in Rezé, where the outing continues on foot through narrow streets, traditional fishermen’s houses and colourful façades. Include the cap-horniers building on the route suggested by the city council.
For lunch, we suggest bringing a picnic to parc de la Grève, recommended for this use by the city council. If visiting on Saturday, the morning organic market at the marina can form part of the walk; check that it is taking place on your date and do not rely on it as the only meal option.
Then choose between spending longer in Trentemoult and continuing to Jardin Extraordinaire. For the latter, N2 connects Trentemoult Sablières with Bas-Chantenay and Hangar à Bananes. The river lines accept Naolib network tickets. Check the departure for Bas-Chantenay and the overland route to the garden before boarding.

The waterfront façades introduce Trentemoult; continue along the narrow streets to explore the neighbourhood.

Jardin Extraordinaire occupies a former quarry on rue Joseph Cholet. After travelling by river to Bas-Chantenay, complete the journey on foot or by bus according to your Naolib search. The shelter of the cliffs favours vegetation, and a 25-metre waterfall forms part of the scene; its flow is regulated throughout the day.
You can stay on the lower route or add the 177-step staircase to square Maurice-Schwob, passing intermediate viewpoints. Treat the climb as an optional extra. If rain makes the garden uninviting, we suggest returning from Trentemoult on N1 and continuing to Musée Dobrée after checking opening and transport.
Exhibitions and science fiction: when to change the sequence
The official calendar consulted on 18 October 2026 lists activities that may change your priorities. Alongside the castle and Musée d’arts exhibitions, Les Utopiales is confirmed from 29 October to 1 November 2026 at Cité internationale des Congrès, 5 rue de Valmy. For science-fiction enthusiasts, the festival offers a specific reason to devote a day to thinking about the future.
If the festival is a priority, replace one proposed day — for example, Pommeraye, Graslin and the memorial — or add a sixth day if your trip allows. Avoid adding it on top of an already full sequence. The castle is closed on 1 November, which also helps guide the change.
For other dates, keep the permanent visits and consult the calendar again. Expression(s) décoloniale(s) #4 ends on 8 November 2026; Plants and People continues until 3 January 2027. These confirmations apply to the stated seasons without assuming future editions.
From itinerary to bookings, checklist and budget
Once the order is set, arrange the commitments that shape the days first: castle and Musée d’arts interiors, any Grand Éléphant ride and the meal you want to book at La Cigale. Then check the crossings to Trentemoult and connection to Bas-Chantenay. This leaves room for breaks during gardens and walks.
Use the packing tool to build a checklist covering walks, boat crossings and indoor visits, adjusting luggage to the forecast shortly before departure. To bring the budget together, use the calculator with your own editable figures already expressed in reais. Treat the result as an illustrative estimate: the tool provides neither exchange rates nor international price quotes, and its reference figures do not represent Nantes prices.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation around Bouffay | Anyone who wants to begin at the castle and explore the historic centre. | It suits day one; Machines and Trentemoult still require walking or transport. |
| Accommodation around Graslin | Anyone who values meals near their accommodation and visits to Passage Pommeraye. | It works well for the Pommeraye and La Cigale day; check the luggage route from the station or shuttle stop. |
| Accommodation around the railway station | Anyone arriving and leaving by train who prefers to simplify those journeys. | The north exit is about 700 metres from the castle, but convenience depends on the address and exit used. |
Your itinerary, ready to save
Day 1 — Nantes history
Begin with Château des ducs de Bretagne’s interiors, explore the courtyard and walls, then continue through Bouffay’s streets. If travelling during the exhibition’s run, include Expression(s) décoloniale(s) #4 in the castle visit.
Prefer an alternative? If this falls on a Monday outside July and August or on 1 November, visit Passage Pommeraye, La Passagère and place Graslin, moving the castle to an opening day.Day 2 — machines and the former shipyard
Reach Machines de l’île via Passerelle Schœlcher or line 5. Arrange Galerie des Machines around your reserved Grand Éléphant time; continue with Carrousel des Mondes Marins and Parc des Chantiers. To finish, we suggest a meal at La Cigale back in the Graslin area, depending on service and reservations.
Prefer an alternative? Without Grand Éléphant boarding availability, keep Galerie des Machines and Carrousel des Mondes Marins. To replace some outdoor time with naval history, visit Maison des Hommes et des techniques after checking opening.Day 3 — botany and art
Spend the morning at Jardin des Plantes on rue Stanislas Baudry, alternating paths and rest areas. After a lunch break, continue to Musée d’arts near the garden. Until 3 January 2027, the Nantes part of Plants and People adds a direct connection between the visits.
Prefer an alternative? On a Thursday, you can leave Musée d’arts for evening opening and take a longer break between garden and museum. If it falls on Tuesday, move this combination to another day and bring Trentemoult forward according to Navibus timetables.Day 4 — architecture, meals and memory
Explore Passage Pommeraye’s three levels, continue to place Graslin and have a meal at La Cigale. Then visit Mémorial de l’abolition de l’esclavage on quai de la Fosse. You can also stop for tea at La Passagère while exploring the arcade.
Prefer an alternative? For lunch inside Passage Pommeraye, choose La Passagère. If you have already visited the memorial and prefer more museum time, replace it with Musée Dobrée after checking opening.Day 5 — a crossing and a quarry garden
Take N1 from Gare Maritime to Trentemoult Sablières. Walk through streets of colourful houses and bring a picnic for parc de la Grève. Then use N2 towards Bas-Chantenay and complete the route to Jardin Extraordinaire overland. Climbing to square Maurice-Schwob is optional.
Prefer an alternative? If rain spoils the garden visit, return from Trentemoult on N1 and continue to Musée Dobrée, depending on opening. If you prefer more time beside the Loire, extend the Trentemoult walk and parc de la Grève break, leaving Jardin Extraordinaire for another occasion. Before you go

Questions to help you decide
Do the five days include arrival and departure?
This itinerary spreads visits over five full days, excluding arrival and departure. It is one stage of a trip around France, with time for museums, meals and Trentemoult, without claiming to cover all of Nantes or set a compulsory trip length.
Can I follow the itinerary without a car?
The route combines walking, Naolib transport and Navibus. For Machines, you can walk via Passerelle Schœlcher or use line 5 to Prairie au Duc. For Trentemoult, N1 leaves from Gare Maritime. Check routes and timetables for your dates.
Does one Machines ticket include everything?
Galerie des Machines, Grand Éléphant and Carrousel des Mondes Marins are separate experiences. Check what each ticket includes. Watching the elephant and riding it are also different outings; arrange the itinerary around whichever boarding time you manage to book.
Which closures most affect the sequence?
Outside July and August, the castle interiors close on Mondays; the venue also lists closure on 1 November. Musée d’arts closes on Tuesdays. Change the order of days to retain the indoor visits.
How can I combine Trentemoult and Jardin Extraordinaire on one day?
Take N1 from Gare Maritime to Trentemoult Sablières. After walking around the neighbourhood, N2 lets you continue to Bas-Chantenay and combine the crossing with Jardin Extraordinaire, completing the route overland. Check the connection before setting off rather than relying on old timetables.
What can I do if it rains?
Musée Dobrée is an alternative to Jardin Extraordinaire. At Machines, Maison des Hommes et des techniques can replace part of the Parc des Chantiers walk, depending on opening. Passage Pommeraye also offers a covered architectural visit with a break at La Passagère.
