Brazil · Manaus, Amazonas, with a river trip to Encontro das Águas and Janauari
Manaus in five days: culture, flavours, forest and rivers with time to rest
Five full days in Manaus: Teatro Amazonas, museums, regional food, MUSA, Encontro das Águas, Janauari and Ponta Negra, with breaks and alternatives.

GETTING STARTED
Devote two days to the historic centre, one to MUSA with dinner at Banzeiro, another to Encontro das Águas and Janauari, and the last to Bosque da Ciência and Ponta Negra. These are five full days, excluding arrival and departure, with an order adaptable to opening days and time set aside to rest.
Who it is for: First-time visitors to Manaus who want to combine culture, gastronomy, forest and rivers, with breaks and options for greater comfort.Five days to discover Manaus with time to enjoy it
Five days let you discover very different sides of Manaus without turning the trip into a race: go inside Teatro Amazonas, explore Palacete Provincial’s collections, try regional cuisine, walk at MUSA and take a boat to Encontro das Águas and Janauari. We suggest two days in the centre, one at MUSA, another on the river and the last at Bosque da Ciência and Ponta Negra, with proper breaks between outings.
These are five full days available at the destination; arrival and departure are excluded. If a flight takes up a morning or afternoon, allow that time for the journey and adjust the number of visits. This itinerary introduces the city and nearby outings rather than replacing an immersive forest stay.
The day numbers help show which visits work together, but the order should follow opening days. Keep Teatro Amazonas and Largo de São Sebastião together, as well as the market and Palacete Provincial. MUSA deserves its own time, while you should allow space in the calendar for the boat until you confirm the duration you are booking.
Where to stay and how to simplify journeys
For this itinerary, I would look for accommodation in the centre, considering proximity to Largo de São Sebastião. This works well for the first two days: you are in the area of the historic attractions and can walk between central sights depending on your accommodation’s address and how much you feel like walking. It does not put all of Manaus on your doorstep; the other stages remain spread across the city.
Comfort here can mean something quite practical: a room suited to a good rest, organised transport to the more distant sights and a free afternoon after walking. Compare these points before paying for services you may not use. You do not need a luxury hotel to plan a trip with breaks.
For arrival, the airport page identifies Coopertaxi in the arrivals hall on the lower ground floor, with an advertised 24-hour service. It is an option for reaching your accommodation with luggage; confirm the fare before booking. For the following days, combine walking in the centre with taxis, transfers arranged in advance or buses on routes you have checked, without relying on fixed journey times.
- When choosing accommodation, check the distance to the Largo, room conditions, air conditioning and the services you want directly with the establishment.
- For MUSA, Bosque da Ciência, Banzeiro and Ponta Negra, plan motorised transport and allow some time between appointments.
- If you choose buses, check each route on Cadê Meu Ônibus before setting off.
Day 1: Teatro Amazonas, the Largo and a break for regional flavours
Start inside Teatro Amazonas on Largo de São Sebastião. The visit lets you look beyond the façade: the Salão Nobre, Crispim do Amaral’s stage curtain and auditorium are among the features presented in the institutional listing. Take time to notice these details before walking around the Largo; this gives the first day context without requiring a long succession of attractions.
Listed hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 09:00–17:00, and Sundays and public holidays, 09:00–13:00. Monday is reserved for maintenance. I suggest going inside in the morning and having lunch afterwards; the building visit is worthwhile in its own right, whether or not there is a performance during your stay.
For a meal, Tambaqui de Banda is at Rua José Clemente, 596, beside the Largo. Its proximity lets you stop without another journey, and its website presents Amazonian cuisine with tambaqui, pirarucu and tacacá dishes. Check the day’s menu before choosing. Afterwards, return to your accommodation to rest; the restaurant’s cultural attraction is listed as awaiting confirmation, so do not rely on a boi-bumbá performance.

Teatro Amazonas begins the itinerary in the centre; after the visit, continue around Largo de São Sebastião.

On day two, start at Mercado Adolpho Lisboa. Regional ingredients and handicrafts are the focus: it brings the outing closer to the food and crafts produced locally. Go in the morning with time to look around, and confirm opening for your date; the official reference describing the market is historical.
Then head to Palacete Provincial on Praça Heliodoro Balbi. The address brings together Pinacoteca do Amazonas, Museu da Imagem e do Som, Museu de Numismática Bernardo Ramos and Museu Tiradentes. We suggest starting with the Pinacoteca and Museu da Imagem e do Som, combining art and cultural records, then adding the other collections according to your interests. Museum-led visits are available.
The detail that shapes this day is the 15:00 closing time. The listing gives opening hours of 09:00–15:00, Monday to Saturday except Wednesdays; admission is free. Arrive during the morning rather than leaving the museums until after a leisurely lunch. Afterwards, Tambaqui de Banda is a verified option if you want to return to the Largo and try another regional dish. You can leave the rest of the afternoon free.

On Praça Heliodoro Balbi, Palacete Provincial houses the collections selected for the second visit to the centre.

Set aside the morning and part of the day for MUSA, which occupies 100 hectares of Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke. Trails, exhibitions, vivariums and an observation tower let you choose the pace of your visit. The website also presents spaces with fish, butterflies, bromeliads and Amazonian water lilies: there is plenty to discover beyond the view from above.
If you do not want to climb the tower, focus on the exhibitions, vivariums and whichever trails you choose to walk. This keeps MUSA in the itinerary without making the climb compulsory. For a break between spaces, the institution lists a snack bar with regional flavours; confirm service during your visit and treat it as a snack stop, as no specific menu or hours have been verified to promise a full lunch.
Afterwards, return to your accommodation and allow a break before dinner. For the evening, we suggest Banzeiro at Rua Libertador, 102, in Nossa Senhora das Graças. Felipe Schaedler’s Amazonian cuisine continues the day’s discoveries in a different way, this time at the table. The restaurant requires another journey from the centre; check hours, menus and reservation conditions directly on its website.
- The address is Avenida Margarita, 6305, Jorge Teixeira.
- Listed visiting hours are 08:30–17:00, with last admission at 16:00; MUSA closes on Wednesdays.
- Closed-toe shoes are compulsory. Guided walks and sunrise and sunset activities require advance booking.
- The butterfly house restricts access for visitors who have applied insect repellent; check MUSA’s guidance when planning your visit.

This archive photograph of MUSA offers a closer look at aquatic vegetation; the visit can also include exhibitions, vivariums and trails.

Set aside the fourth day to discover Manaus from the river. Encontro das Águas is the outing’s main focus, and Janauari extends the route beyond that stop. Choose the format before booking: time on the water, transfers and lunch affect both the pace of the day and how the options compare.
Amazon Brazil Jungle Tours describes a speedboat outing including Encontro das Águas, Vila do Catalão and Parque Ecológico Janauari, with possible lunch and return to the port or hotel depending on the booking. It is an option for those seeking a shorter trip, but the page mentions around three hours in the text and one day in the heading. Agree the total duration, inclusions and minimum group requirement before arranging the rest of your schedule; a private trip is also possible.
To devote the whole day to the route and combine more services, Amazon Explorers offers a private experience on enquiry, departing from and returning to Porto de Manaus–Roadway, with hotel–port–hotel transfers, a guide and lunch. The programme includes Encontro das Águas and Janauari. Ask for a description of the food and planned stops with the proposal instead of assuming that every trip offers the same package.
Keep your plans for Janauari flexible: the operator states that access and weather can change the programme and that visits to the giant water lilies may be suspended during the low-water season from September to December. In October, choose the outing for the overall river journey and places visited, without making the day depend on aquatic vegetation or animal sightings. Keep the evening after your return free of tight timings.

The contrast between the waters marks the river stage of the itinerary, which can continue to Janauari depending on the route booked.

Begin the final day at Bosque da Ciência beside INPA, on Rua Bem-te-vi in Petrópolis. The idea is to devote the morning to nature and science on a separate visit from MUSA: the two places are not neighbours and do not need to compete for the same day.
The Bosque lists opening from Tuesday to Sunday, with Monday dedicated to maintenance, and requires booking by time slot. The page states that admission is temporarily free; check this when booking your visit. Afterwards, allow time for lunch and rest before crossing the city for another outing.
In the late afternoon, take motorised transport to Ponta Negra in the West Zone. The promenade, gardens and viewpoints facing Rio Negro offer a different ending to the trip: walking, stopping and enjoying the scenery. We suggest a waterfront walk; do not count on swimming as part of this plan. If you prefer fewer journeys on the final day, choose between the morning at the Bosque and the afternoon at Ponta Negra according to what you most want to enjoy.
Adjust the order to opening days and check the cultural calendar
Before booking activities, put your five days on the calendar and arrange visits around opening days. If the trip begins on a Monday, for example, one possible sequence is the market and Palacete on Monday, the theatre and Largo on Tuesday, the boat on Wednesday, MUSA on Thursday and the Bosque with Ponta Negra on Friday. This arrangement depends on confirmation of the market, river departure and bookings.
Check the cultural calendar shortly before your trip too. During the research on 17/10/2026, the ManausCult portal was unstable and the information found did not allow a confirmed event to be included. The itinerary works without fixed dates; if an official performance is announced for your stay, include it on one of the free evenings after checking the venue, time and ticket.
- Teatro Amazonas: closed Mondays; visits on Sundays and public holidays end at 13:00.
- Palacete Provincial: open Monday to Saturday except Wednesdays; closes at 15:00.
- MUSA: closed Wednesdays.
- Bosque da Ciência: closed Mondays, with visits booked by time slot.
Plan your budget around the choices that improve comfort
To decide where to allocate your budget, start with what changes your experience: accommodation location, transport to distant attractions and the format of the boat trip. We suggest comparing these choices before adding extra services. An organised return journey after MUSA or a river trip including transfers and lunch may be more useful to you than upgrading the room category.
In Viajandar’s calculator, enter Manaus, the number of people and the total length of stay, including arrival and departure. Compare the available styles and use the result as an illustrative estimate in reais. The tool gives reference figures for accommodation, meals, transport and a 15% buffer; it does not replace prices obtained for your dates.
Complete the plan with prices obtained directly for the boat and admission, without assuming these are included in the estimate. When comparing the two river outings, also note transfers, lunch, duration and whether the trip is shared or private. This lets you consider what you will receive rather than an isolated total.
Turn the itinerary into a checklist and allow time for breaks
With the days arranged, open the packing tool and select the expected weather, total duration and traveller profiles. Use the generated checklist as a starting point and manually check the closed-toe shoes required by MUSA. For the boat, add the items recommended by the operator for the trip you have booked.
Then check that the calendar retains the breaks that make this itinerary more enjoyable: rest after the theatre, free time after the Palacete and a pause between MUSA and Banzeiro. If you have more days or want to keep discovering the destination, visit Viajandar’s Manaus page without squeezing more visits into these five days.

Your itinerary, ready to save
Day 1 — Teatro Amazonas and Largo de São Sebastião
Visit the interior of Teatro Amazonas in the morning, walk around Largo de São Sebastião and have lunch at Tambaqui de Banda on Rua José Clemente. Leave the rest of the afternoon for a break at your accommodation, without adding another part of the city to the day.
Prefer an alternative? If Teatro Amazonas is closed, bring forward Mercado Adolpho Lisboa and Palacete Provincial, provided the Palacete is open; it welcomes visitors on Mondays but closes on Wednesdays and Sundays.Day 2 — Mercado Adolpho Lisboa and Palacete Provincial
Start at the market to discover regional ingredients and handicrafts. Continue that morning to Palacete Provincial on Praça Heliodoro Balbi and allow time for the Pinacoteca and Museu da Imagem e do Som before the 15:00 closing time. Afterwards, stop for a meal; Tambaqui de Banda is a verified option if you want to return to the Largo.
Prefer an alternative? If Palacete Provincial is closed, swap this day with Bosque da Ciência and Ponta Negra, taking account of the Bosque’s booking requirements and Monday closure.Day 3 — MUSA, rest and Banzeiro
Take motorised transport to MUSA in Jorge Teixeira and combine trails, exhibitions and vivariums; include the tower only if it suits you. Consider the snack bar for a break, without relying on it for a full lunch. Return to your accommodation, then go out later for dinner at Banzeiro in Nossa Senhora das Graças.
Prefer an alternative? For a visit without climbing the tower, focus on MUSA’s exhibitions, vivariums and trails chosen on site. If you prefer indoor collections, replace the morning with Palacete Provincial on a day when it is open.Day 4 — Encontro das Águas and Janauari
Set aside the day for the river trip. Amazon Brazil Jungle Tours offers a route including Encontro das Águas, Vila do Catalão and Janauari; agree the duration, boarding arrangements, lunch and return in advance. If you book the shorter version, leave the remaining time free to rest, as the published duration needs confirmation.
Prefer an alternative? To spend more time on the river and combine the transfer, guide and lunch, enquire about Amazon Explorers’ private full-day experience with Encontro das Águas and Janauari.Day 5 — Bosque da Ciência and Ponta Negra
Visit Bosque da Ciência in Petrópolis during your booked morning slot. Allow time for lunch and rest before taking motorised transport to Ponta Negra in the West Zone. Finish with a promenade walk and a stop at the viewpoints facing Rio Negro.
Prefer an alternative? For a final day with fewer journeys, visit only Bosque da Ciência in the morning and rest afterwards. If Rio Negro scenery is your priority, choose just the late-afternoon walk at Ponta Negra. Before you go

Questions to help you decide
What can I see in five days in Manaus?
This itinerary takes five full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. It combines city attractions and a nearby river trip but does not replace an immersive forest stay. If your flights take up part of those days, reduce the programme instead of squeezing in every visit.
Which area should I consider for accommodation?
For this combination of visits, the centre is a practical base, especially near Largo de São Sebastião. Before booking, check room conditions and the services that matter to you directly with the accommodation. This location does not remove the need to travel to MUSA, Bosque da Ciência and Ponta Negra.
Do I need to climb the tower to enjoy MUSA?
No. MUSA also has trails, exhibitions and vivariums. You can build your visit around these spaces and leave out the tower. Closed-toe shoes remain compulsory; activities such as guided walks require advance booking.
Can I be sure of seeing giant water lilies in Janauari in October?
No. Amazon Explorers states that visits to the giant water lilies may be suspended during the low-water season from September to December. Confirm the route before booking and choose the trip for the overall experience of the river journey, Encontro das Águas and Janauari, without relying on seeing the lilies.
Is Banzeiro near Teatro Amazonas?
Banzeiro is at Rua Libertador, 102, in Nossa Senhora das Graças, so you need transport from the centre. We suggest dinner there after MUSA, with a break at your accommodation between the two outings.
Do I need to book a package for all five days?
The boat trips mentioned are offered by tour operators, and some MUSA activities need advance booking. For other visits, check the options available; Palacete Provincial, for example, offers museum-led visits.
Does the itinerary include an event or performance?
No confirmed performance is included in this itinerary. The official calendar search on 17/10/2026 was inconclusive. Check ManausCult for your dates and treat the visit inside Teatro Amazonas as an outing independent of performances.
