Malmö in three days without a car: old town, art and waterfront
Spend three full days in Malmö without a car, exploring the old town, Malmöhus, library, Konsthall and waterfront, with tips on stays, meals and tickets.

GETTING STARTED
Divide three full days between the old town and Malmöhus, the library and Konsthall, and the Ribersborg waterfront and Västra Hamnen. Compare accommodation near Malmö Central and Triangeln based on your routes, choose your museum ticket according to the visits you want to make, and treat the sauna and bathing as an optional expense. Arrival and departure are not included in the three days.
Who it is for: Brazilian travellers on a longer trip through Scandinavia who want to spend three full days in Malmö without a car, combining history, art, architecture and the waterfront while keeping an eye on costs.Three full days, with a different part of the city each day
You can plan three very different days in Malmö: one exploring a medieval church, squares and a castle; another taking in a library, contemporary art and parks; and a third focusing on the sea and the architecture of Västra Hamnen. We suggest grouping these outings by area and choosing tickets after deciding what you actually want to visit.
This itinerary covers three full days within a longer trip through Scandinavia. Arrival and departure are not included. You do not need to cross the city several times a day or pay for every experience to fill the itinerary.
The order is flexible: if one of your dates falls on a Monday, make that your waterfront day. Malmö museum and Malmö Konsthall normally close on Mondays; saving the other two days for them avoids finding their doors shut.
Malmö Central or Triangeln: choose what fits your trip
If you arrive by train and want to start with the old town, we suggest looking for accommodation near Malmö Central or in Gamla staden. This base works well for visiting Sankt Petri, Stortorget and Lilla Torg in sequence, and makes the station an easy point of reference on arrival.
Triangeln is the other area to compare: it works well for Malmö Konsthall and the day that continues to Pildammsparken or to Möllevångstorget and Folkets Park. It makes sense if you prefer to stay near this part of the itinerary, even though the first day is spent in the old town.
Any savings need to be established through a concrete comparison. Check the total accommodation cost and map out journeys from the exact address. There is no evidence that either area has lower nightly rates; a convenient address may reduce travel, but it does not guarantee a cheaper stay.
How to get around without making transport an automatic expense
According to Visit Malmö, the centre is compact and can be explored on foot. Use this to your advantage: visit the squares in sequence, keep the library and Konsthall on the same day, and save public transport for stretches you would rather not walk, especially on the way to or from the waterfront.
There is a rail connection between Copenhagen Airport and Malmö. If you land at Malmö Airport, the connection listed by the destination's tourism organisation is an airport bus. These are different arrival points: check which one matches your ticket before choosing accommodation.
Skånetrafiken provides regional transport, and tickets can be bought through its app or from machines at stations. First work out the journeys you need to make; then compare the ticket types available for your dates. This itinerary does not assume that buying a pass is better than paying for the journeys you will actually make.
Day 1: Sankt Petri, old town squares and a stop at Saluhall
Start at Sankt Petri, the medieval church highlighted by Visit Malmö, which also identifies its Merchants' Chapel. Check whether you can visit the interior that day. Then continue to Stortorget and Lilla Torg: this sequence introduces you to the old town before you enter a museum.
At Lilla Torg, take time to enjoy the square and the surrounding façades. The pleasure of this start to the day lies in walking between nearby places, looking at the buildings and taking short breaks, without turning every stop into another admission charge.
For a meal before Malmöhus, we suggest heading to Malmö Saluhall at Gibraltargatan 6. Inside the market, Möllans Ost confirms that it has a cheese shop and bar serving charcuterie and pintxos. It is a specific option for those who enjoy cheese and small plates; how much you eat is up to you, and the business has its own opening hours.
If you prefer to start the day at the castle, replace this stop with Restaurang Wega. The museum's official page lists a daily lunch special, sandwiches and fika, a coffee break with something to eat. The restaurant is beside the main entrance and can be reached through the courtyard without a museum ticket.

Malmöhus: buy the ticket for the visit you intend to make
After lunch, head to Malmöhus. For an itinerary that combines history, art and outdoor walks, we suggest spending the afternoon at the castle complex. The most useful decision comes before you buy: do you want to visit only this complex, or Teknikens och sjöfartens hus as well?
If the answer is just the castle, buy the corresponding ticket. If you want to visit both complexes, rearrange the day: start at the museums at 11:00, have lunch at Wega and leave the squares until afterwards. The combined ticket is valid for one day, so visiting on separate dates does not make use of this option.
The city council reports that a lift is being replaced, with exhibitions closed or access restricted. Check which areas will be available before buying. To finish the less intensive version of the outing, walk through Kungsparken and Slottsparken, parks separated by the canal; the next day, you return to the Slottsparken area to visit the library.
- The castle complex ticket covers the castle, aquarium and Art Museum.
- Teknikens och sjöfartens hus has its own ticket; the combined ticket allows you to visit both complexes in one day.
- Visitors aged 0–19 receive free admission under the ticket options specified by the city council. Wisdome sessions have a separate charge.
- The published regular hours are 11:00–17:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to Sunday, and 11:00–19:00 on Thursday. It normally closes on Monday, with exceptions during local school holidays.

At Malmöhus, your ticket choice depends on how much of the museum complex you want to explore.

Day 2: architecture and a reading break at the City Library
Start the second day at the City Library, at Kung Oscars väg 11, beside Slottsparken. Its architecture earns it a place in the itinerary: it consists of three connected buildings, Cylindern, Ljusets kalender and Slottet. Notice the contrast between the large windows of Ljusets kalender and the older section, Slottet, and take the opportunity for a reading break.
For this itinerary, we suggest arriving from 10:00 onwards. On weekdays, the library opens earlier, but between 08:30 and 10:00 only reception is staffed. An exceptional closure has been announced for 13 November 2026; on that date, start at Konsthall at 11:00 and leave the library for another day.
If you get hungry, the city's page confirms that Novell is on the ground floor, serving sandwiches, salads, sweet treats, coffee and tea. Another option is to bring a snack: there is a designated area for eating food brought from elsewhere, with a microwave but no cutlery provided. Use this space, as permission to eat does not extend to the whole library.
From here, continue to the Triangeln area and Konsthall without returning to the central station. If you choose to take a bus to the library, check the route for your date; the city council identifies the Malmö stadsbiblioteket stop and also provides information on walking there from Malmö Central and Triangeln.

The library's combination of buildings makes it worth a stop before continuing to the contemporary art in Triangeln.

Konsthall: free art, a confirmed exhibition and lunch at SMAK
Malmö Konsthall, at S:t Johannesgatan 7 near Triangeln, is the main choice for art with free admission in this itinerary. Allow time for the exhibition and have lunch within the same complex: this lets you enjoy the area without adding a separate journey just to eat.
The city's events calendar was consulted on 4 November 2026, and the exhibition dates were checked with the institution itself. I dreamt of you in colours, by Otobong Nkanga, runs from 10 October 2026 to 28 March 2027. Drawings, paintings, installations, tapestries, photographs, sculptures and sound works explore social relationships, natural resources and the climate crisis. It is a good reason to set aside time for this visit if your trip falls within that period.
The gallery publishes opening hours of Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00–17:00, extended to 19:00 on Wednesdays. It closes on Mondays, during exhibition installations and on certain public holidays. Free guided tours are available at regular scheduled times, with no booking required; check the session and available language if you would like to join.
For lunch, SMAK is in Mellanrummet, near the bookshop. Konsthall lists a daily lunch special from 11:30 to 14:30, as well as coffee and sweet treats. If the exhibition keeps you longer, have lunch before continuing your visit. The restaurant also reports that it serves customers on Mondays, when the gallery normally closes.
Pildammsparken or Möllevångstorget and Folkets Park?
After Konsthall and SMAK, we suggest heading to Pildammsparken. It changes the pace of the afternoon: after two indoor visits, you get a walk through one of the parks highlighted by Visit Malmö, without needing to fit in another paid attraction.
If you prefer to continue exploring the streets, replace Pildammsparken with Möllevångstorget followed by Folkets Park, also identified by the tourism organisation. Choose one of these two sequences so you have time to enjoy the route. There is no need to fit every place into the same afternoon.
Folkets Park also appeared in the city's events calendar consulted for this article, but this itinerary recommends it as a place to stroll, without promising a specific activity. The exhibition with confirmed dates to include in your plans is Otobong Nkanga's.
Day 3: Ribersborg, with bathing and sauna as optional extras
Set aside the third day for Ribersborg and Västra Hamnen. Start with a walk along the Ribersborg waterfront, recommended by Visit Malmö, and decide whether you want to include Ribersborgs Kallbadhus for a bathing experience. The area is still worth exploring even if you do not use the paid facilities.
The operator lists two sea-bathing areas and six saunas, with women's and men's sections and two shared saunas. Before deciding, check whether you are comfortable with the rules: you must sit on a towel in the sauna, swimwear is prohibited inside it and permitted in the sea. Photography is prohibited in the bathing area.
For lunch without returning to the centre, we suggest the restaurant at Kallbadhus itself. The page consulted lists a daily lunch special from 11:30 to 14:00 and presents fish, meat and vegetarian options. Check the service and menu for your date; the dishes listed during the week researched are not a promise of what will be served on your trip. After the break, continue to Västra Hamnen.
Västra Hamnen and Turning Torso to round off the waterfront outing
In Västra Hamnen, continue your walk and view the Turning Torso from outside. After the old squares, library buildings and castle, this part of the itinerary adds another type of architecture to the trip. The recommendation is to explore the area and see the tower's exterior; the evidence does not confirm any tourist visits inside.
To get from Ribersborg to Västra Hamnen and then back to your accommodation, check the actual route and decide how much you want to walk. Public transport can help you finish the outing without having to retrace the whole route on foot.
If the weather gets in the way, change the order of the days. On an afternoon when opening is confirmed, Konsthall or the City Library can replace the walk, leaving Västra Hamnen for a better spell of weather. On Monday, remember that Konsthall will normally be closed.

The Turning Torso features in the outing as an architectural landmark to observe while walking through Västra Hamnen.

Adjustments that avoid unnecessary purchases and journeys
To keep spending under control, start with three decisions: which base suits your routes, which Malmö museum complex you want to visit, and whether bathing at Kallbadhus will be part of your trip. Konsthall offers a free art visit, and the library allows you to bring food to an authorised area. The suggested restaurants, meanwhile, were chosen because they fit the itinerary and offer confirmed services, without a price comparison that would justify calling them inexpensive.
The practical information was checked on 4 November 2026. Two exceptions deserve attention: the library closes on 13 November 2026, and Malmö Saluhall closes entirely on 23 November 2026. For the latter date, a specific dining alternative is SMAK, which reports that it serves customers on Mondays; include it on the library day or adjust your route, rather than expecting to find another business open inside the market.
Once you have chosen your visits, use Mala Inteligente to create your checklist: clothing suited to the weather forecast for your walks, personal items and a towel if you plan to use a sauna. In the cost calculator, prepare an estimate in Brazilian reais using your own editable amounts for accommodation, food, transport and attractions. It does not provide exchange rates or international price quotes; its reference amounts do not represent prices in Malmö.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation near Malmö Central or in Gamla staden | You arrive by train and want to start with the old town, including Stortorget, Lilla Torg and Malmöhus in your itinerary. | It makes this start to the trip easier; you will still need to walk or use public transport for Konsthall, Pildammsparken and the waterfront. The location is not evidence of lower nightly rates. |
| Accommodation near Triangeln | You prefer to use the Konsthall area as your base and combine art with Pildammsparken or Möllevångstorget. | It fits the second day well, but you need to check your actual arrival route and journeys to the old town and waterfront. |
| Castle complex ticket | Your main interest is visiting Malmöhus, the aquarium and the Art Museum. | It does not include Teknikens och sjöfartens hus. It avoids buying the broader combined ticket when you do not intend to visit the other complex. |
| Malmö museum combined ticket | You also want to explore Teknikens och sjöfartens hus and are happy to devote more time to museums. | It is valid for one day at both complexes. To make the most of it, start with the museums and shorten the other stops that day. |
| Malmö Konsthall | You want to include contemporary art without paying an admission fee. | Admission is free, but the gallery closes on Mondays and may also close during exhibition installations and on certain public holidays. |
| Ribersborgs Kallbadhus | You would like to try the saunas and sea bathing, following the venue's rules. | There is a charge for the bathing section. Those who prefer to avoid this expense can keep the walk around Ribersborg and continue to Västra Hamnen. |

- Plan three full days of sightseeing in addition to arrival and departure. If one falls on a Monday, schedule Ribersborg and Västra Hamnen for that day and spread the museums across the other two.
- Compare accommodation by exact address, total cost and routes to Malmö Central, Triangeln and your chosen attractions, without assuming which area will have lower nightly rates.
- Check routes with Skånetrafiken and buy the appropriate ticket through the app or from station machines. Do not choose a pass before knowing how many journeys you will actually make.
- Before paying for Malmö museum, choose between a single complex and the one-day combined ticket. Also check which areas are affected by the lift replacement.
- Check exhibition installation periods, public holidays and opening hours at Konsthall. Otobong Nkanga's exhibition is confirmed from 10 October 2026 to 28 March 2027.
- The City Library has announced a closure on 13 November 2026. Malmö Saluhall has announced that the entire market will close on 23 November 2026; its individual businesses will also be closed that day.
- Check the individual opening hours of Möllans Ost, Wega, Novell, SMAK and the Kallbadhus restaurant. The main venue's opening hours do not guarantee the same hours for dining.
- If you choose to bathe at Kallbadhus, bring a towel to sit on in the sauna and follow the rules: swimwear is prohibited in the sauna and permitted in the sea, and photography is prohibited in the bathing area.
- Turn your itinerary choices into a checklist in Mala Inteligente. For budgeting, use your own editable amounts in Brazilian reais in the calculator; it does not provide exchange rates or Swedish price quotes.
Questions to help you decide
Can you enjoy Malmö without a car?
There is no need to hire a car as a matter of course for this itinerary. The centre is compact and can be explored on foot; public transport helps with stretches you would rather not walk. Check Skånetrafiken for routes from your accommodation, especially on the waterfront day.
Is it better to stay near Malmö Central or Triangeln?
Malmö Central and Gamla staden work well for arriving by rail and exploring the old town. Triangeln works well for Konsthall and the southern part of the itinerary. Compare the total cost of your stay and routes from the exact address: this research has not established that either area has lower nightly rates.
Is the Malmö museum combined ticket worth buying?
It only makes sense if you want to visit both the castle complex and Teknikens och sjöfartens hus on the same day. For the castle, aquarium and Art Museum, choose the ticket for that complex. Wisdome sessions have a separate charge.
Which free admission options are confirmed?
Free admission to Malmö Konsthall is confirmed. At Malmö museum, children and young people aged 0–19 receive free admission under the ticket options specified by the city council, but this does not cover the separate Wisdome charge.
How can you adapt the itinerary if one of the days falls on a Monday?
Use Monday for Ribersborg and Västra Hamnen, leaving Malmöhus and Konsthall for the other days. If you need an indoor visit, the City Library publishes regular Monday opening hours; check for exceptions. SMAK also reports that it serves customers on Mondays, regardless of the gallery's closure.
Is there a confirmed exhibition for November 2026?
Yes. I dreamt of you in colours, by Otobong Nkanga, is confirmed at Malmö Konsthall from 10 October 2026 to 28 March 2027. Include it on the Triangeln day, taking the institution's opening days into account.
Do these three days include arrival and departure?
No. These are three full days of sightseeing in Malmö, with arrival and departure excluded, as part of a longer trip through Scandinavia. If travel takes up part of one of these days, you will need to reduce the number of visits.
