Vila Velha in four days: Prainha, beaches, chocolate and Barra do Jucu
Spend four full days in Vila Velha exploring Convento da Penha, Prainha, Praia da Costa, Barra do Jucu and Museu Garoto, with regional food and rest.

GETTING STARTED
Set aside one day for Convento da Penha and Prainha, another for Praia da Costa and the area around Farol Santa Luzia, a third for Barra do Jucu, and the last for Museu Garoto, lunch at Regina Maris and the Itapuã and Itaparica seafronts. Praia da Costa is the suggested base, with breaks at your accommodation and arrival and departure outside these four days.
Who it is for: Couples, families and independent travellers who want to combine heritage, beaches, chocolate, regional cuisine and relaxation over four full days of sightseeing.Four full days, based in Praia da Costa
You can combine the heights of Convento da Penha, the streets of Prainha, a morning at the beach, chocolate and Barra do Jucu without spending four days rushing around. The suggested sequence is simple: heritage on the first day, Praia da Costa on the second, Barra on the third, and Museu Garoto with a regional lunch and the seafront on the fourth. Arrival and departure are outside this count, so sightseeing does not compete with luggage and travel transfers.
Praia da Costa is our suggested base. The Ministry of Tourism's article highlights its promenade and the presence of hotels and restaurants, a combination that makes it easy to go out for a walk and return for a rest. When comparing accommodation, look at the exact location and how it fits these trips back and forth. Viajandar's Vila Velha page brings together listed services and accommodation, but you need to check the establishment's terms for each booking.
If you arrive at Vitória's airport or bus terminal, continue to Vila Velha by ground transport. Vitória City Hall lists Táxi Vix access points at both terminals; for anyone travelling with luggage, this is one option for a more comfortable arrival. Terceira Ponte is one of the routes from the capital. Keep this journey outside your first full day of sightseeing.
Day 1: Convento da Penha, Campinho and a break at the top
Start at Convento da Penha and give yourself time to appreciate it. The complex stands on a rocky outcrop, brings together religious spaces and offers views of Vila Velha, the entrance to the bay and the ocean. The appeal lies in observing the architecture and landscape, exploring Campinho and taking a closer look at the chapel of São Francisco, without turning the visit into a dash to the photo spot.
To save you the uphill walk, the sanctuary advertises a van service to Campinho. This makes the visit more comfortable, but does not mean that every area is fully accessible. On the opening-hours page consulted, visiting hours are 6 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday and 4 am to 5 pm on Sunday; the Campinho gate closes at 4:45 pm. Check the service before going, especially if you plan to arrive by car, as vehicle access is restricted.
There is room for a proper break here: the Convento's snack bar lists daily opening hours of 7:30 am to 5 pm. Use this break for a snack before continuing to Prainha. It is a practical way to break up the morning, especially with children, without adding a separate journey just to eat.

On the first day, allow time to explore the Convento da Penha complex and take a break at Campinho.

In Prainha, combine Igreja do Rosário with Casa da Memória
After the Convento, head to Prainha and explore the exterior of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário. The Archdiocese of Vitória traces its origins to the chapel begun in 1535: it is a good stop for seeing how the city's history emerges along the walk itself. A visit inside depends on confirmation that it is open; the façade and surroundings already make the proposed walk worthwhile.
Combine the church with Casa da Memória, at Rua Luciano das Neves, 14. This community museum, managed by the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Vila Velha, holds collections covering history, archaeology, visual arts, and image and sound. After seeing heritage out on the streets, it gives you another layer of understanding of the city. The MuseusBr listing states that admission is free, opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, and guided visits require advance booking.
Keep the rest of the day more flexible: return to Praia da Costa for a meal and a rest at your accommodation. If your trip starts on a Monday, swap this day with the Praia da Costa outing and return to Prainha when Casa da Memória is open. This keeps the two places together, without an extra trip just for the museum.

Day 2: Praia da Costa and the area around Farol Santa Luzia
The second day begins without a ticket or a set time: choose Praia da Costa for a morning on the beach and a walk along the promenade. Although Costa, Itapuã and Itaparica form a continuous seafront, you do not need to cover it all at once. Staying at one beach, stopping for something to eat and returning to your accommodation is also a way to enjoy the destination. Before entering the sea, check the current bathing conditions.
After lunch and a rest, the suggestion is to explore the area around Farol Santa Luzia. The Espírito Santo government's tourism page places the lighthouse between Morro do Moreno and Praia da Costa and distinguishes the surrounding area from the closed interior. Set aside this outing to enjoy the scenery, without counting on entry to the tower, and check access conditions for the surrounding area before going.
If you want an even more relaxed afternoon, stick to Praia da Costa and a short walk after your break. Itapuã and Itaparica already have a place on the fourth day; you can save your energy for exploring Barra do Jucu tomorrow.

Praia da Costa gets a morning of its own in the itinerary and serves as a base to return to for a rest between outings.

Day 3: the beach, Rio Jucu and local history at Ponte da Madalena
Set aside the third day for Barra do Jucu, with your outward and return journeys arranged. The neighbourhood offers a change of pace: the beach, views of the river mouth and cultural connections all feature in the same outing. Start at the beach and take in the mouth of the Rio Jucu, without feeling obliged to swim just because the sea is there. The Ministry of Tourism's article highlights precisely this combination of beach, surfing, culture and river.
After a generous break for lunch and rest, head to Ponte da Madalena. Museu Vivo da Barra do Jucu presents the bridge as an entrance to Jacarenema and explains its connection to congo and its historic role in linking the neighbourhood. This history gives the stop meaning: as well as looking out over the Rio Jucu, you get to know a place connected to local memory.
The itinerary stays around the beach, the bridge and the river; it does not depend on walking Jacarenema's trails, whose opening is not confirmed in the sources consulted. Do not count on an impromptu congo performance either. To add a cultural activity with confirmed dates and an address, see the capoeira festival below, if your trip coincides with its programme.

In Barra do Jucu, the scenery at the river mouth shares the day with the beach and a stop at Ponte da Madalena.

On 5 and 6 November 2026, add capoeira to your day in Barra
If you are in Vila Velha on 5 or 6 November 2026, it is worth moving your Barra do Jucu day to one of those dates. Secult-ES has confirmed the 20th Festival Pedagógico de Capoeira, organised by Contramestre Enison. It is an opportunity to end the outing with a cultural activity, attending participatory sessions and capoeira circles with a set programme.
As the programme takes place in the evening, shorten your time at the beach and allow for a break before heading to the school. Arrange your return transport before the festival starts. Outside these dates, keep your Barra outing to the daytime: this confirmation does not indicate a weekly or permanent programme.
- 5 November 2026: a participatory cultural session with instructor Raíssa and capoeira circles.
- 6 November 2026: a capoeira circle, initiation ceremony and grading.
- On both days: 7 pm to 9 pm at Escola Municipal Dr. Tuffy Nader, Rua Antônio Fonseca, no street number, Barra do Jucu; activities are free and open to everyone.
Day 4: the history of chocolate at Museu Garoto
On the fourth day, go to Glória to visit Chocotour Museu Garoto, at Praça Meyerfreund, 1. According to the MuseusBr listing, the visit presents the brand's history and the transformation of cocoa into chocolate. After two days with plenty of scenery, it is a change of subject that works well for adults and children interested in discovering what lies behind such a familiar product.
The listing states that admission is paid and guided visits require advance booking. Secure a slot before deciding on the final order of your four days, and set aside some time for the shop, which is also mentioned in the institutional description. The proposed outing is to the museum; a visit to the production line is not confirmed.
Afterwards, take transport to Regina Maris for lunch. This combination allows you to devote the morning to the history of chocolate and the afternoon to regional cuisine and the sea, with a journey between Glória and the seafront. Leave some spare time between the end of the visit and lunch so you can make this journey without rushing.
Regional lunch at Regina Maris and an afternoon in Itapuã and Itaparica
For lunch, the suggestion is Regina Maris, at Rua Deolindo Perim, 79, the address published by the restaurant itself. Its website presents cuisine from Espírito Santo and Bahia, with moquecas, plated acarajé, carne de sol and baião de dois. This selection gives the meal a reason to feature in the itinerary: you set aside time to discover regional cuisine between the museum and a seaside walk. Confirm opening hours and the availability of what you would like to order on the day.
The restaurant also lists a veranda and a children's area, useful features for anyone looking for a more comfortable break or travelling as a family. As the page gives conflicting neighbourhood information in the address and the location heading, use the full address to plan your arrival.
After lunch, head to the Itapuã and Itaparica seafronts. Choose how far you want to walk and stop while the outing is still enjoyable. If the meal runs long, stick to just one of them: the idea is to finish the trip with the sea and free time, without feeling obliged to cover the entire seafront.
How to swap days while keeping the best combinations
Think about journeys by area: walk between the stops in Prainha and along your chosen stretches of seafront; use buses or hired transport to connect your base, Glória and Barra do Jucu. This preserves your breaks and helps organise visits spread across the city. Also allow time to enjoy your accommodation between outings.
Bus users should pay attention to the recent operational change. Ceturb announced that it would take over municipal routes on 31 October 2026, with new numbering and gradual integration in the following weeks. The former route 003 became route 680, Rio Marinho/Praia da Costa via Carlos Lindenberg/Prainha. Check current routes and timetables through Ceturb's service or ÔnibusGV, as well as guidance on paying with CartãoGV.
To adapt the itinerary to the weather, keep the combinations that work well together: the Convento with Prainha; Museu Garoto with Regina Maris and the seafront. Casa da Memória is a practical alternative for a rainy morning, bearing in mind its Tuesday-to-Sunday opening schedule. Museu Garoto can also move to another day, provided you can reschedule your booking. Praia da Costa and Barra do Jucu, meanwhile, deserve the periods with the best conditions for outdoor outings.
Turn your itinerary into packed bags and a planned budget
With your outings decided, use Mala Inteligente to turn the trip into a checklist. Select the hot-weather/beach profile, the total length of your stay and the profiles of everyone travelling; then review the list with your walks, cultural visits and, if relevant, the festival evening in mind. Include arrival and departure in this duration. The tool helps organise your luggage, but does not replace checking the weather forecast.
In Calculadora de Custos de Viagem, enter your destination, number of days and number of people, and choose the travel style that suits you. The result is an estimate in Brazilian reais, with reference amounts for accommodation, food and transport, plus a 15% margin. Compare this calculation with the costs you research, and also consider Museu Garoto admission, the Convento van if you plan to use it, and journeys to Barra. The estimate is not a quote and does not confirm local prices.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Use Praia da Costa as your base | This suits travellers who want to return to their accommodation between outings and enjoy the promenade. | It makes breaks near the seafront easier, but still requires journeys to Glória and Barra do Jucu. |
| Take the van up to Campinho | This suits anyone who prefers to save their energy on the climb to Convento da Penha. | The transport covers this stretch; it does not mean that every area of the complex can be reached without effort. |
| Set aside a day for the beach, Rio Jucu and Ponte da Madalena | This suits travellers who want to explore Barra do Jucu without spending every day at the beach. | It is worth arranging your outward and return journeys and keeping the afternoon free of tightly scheduled commitments in another area. |
| End your day in Barra at the Festival Pedagógico de Capoeira | This suits travellers visiting on 5 or 6 November 2026 who are interested in culture. | The programme runs from 7 pm to 9 pm, so it calls for a break beforehand and planned return transport. |
| Combine Museu Garoto, Regina Maris and the Itapuã and Itaparica seafronts | This suits travellers who want chocolate, a regional lunch and a walk on the same day. | The museum visit requires advance booking, and the journey between Glória and the seafront calls for transport. |

Questions to help you decide
Do the four days include arrival and departure?
The itinerary allows for four full days of sightseeing, with arrival and departure outside the count. It is a selection combining heritage, beaches, chocolate and Barra do Jucu; it does not aim to cover every outing in Vila Velha.
Where is a good place to stay for this itinerary?
Praia da Costa is suggested for its promenade, restaurants and suitability for the breaks in the itinerary. Compare the accommodation's exact location with the seafront and your planned journeys. This selection does not recommend a specific hotel or provide a price quote.
Do I need to hire a car?
You can combine walking within Prainha and along the seafront with buses and taxis or other hired transport between areas. Bus operations changed in late October 2026; check the current routes. For Barra do Jucu, arrange your return journey too.
Does the Garoto outing include the factory?
The proposed visit is to Chocotour Museu Garoto, which presents the brand's history and the transformation of cocoa into chocolate, as well as the shop. The source consulted does not confirm access to the production line. Book your visit and check the available format.
How can I adapt the outings if it rains?
Bring forward Casa da Memória, which lists opening days as Tuesday to Sunday, or fit in Museu Garoto if a booking is available. Leave Praia da Costa and Barra do Jucu for another day. Lunch at Regina Maris can also move with the museum day.
Can you go inside the tower at Farol Santa Luzia?
The suggested visit is limited to the area around Farol Santa Luzia. The government source distinguishes this area from the closed interior; the itinerary does not include entry to the tower.
Is there a confirmed event to combine with Barra do Jucu?
Secult has confirmed the 20th Festival Pedagógico de Capoeira on 5 and 6 November 2026, from 7 pm to 9 pm at Escola Municipal Dr. Tuffy Nader in Barra do Jucu. The activity is free and open to everyone. This programme applies only to those dates.
