Leiden on Foot in Three Days: Canals, Gardens and Museums
Three full days in Leiden with canals, the Hortus, museums and café breaks, plus advice on choosing where to stay and which tickets to buy.

GETTING STARTED
Begin with the Burcht and central canals, devote day two to the Hortus and Rapenburg, and finish with De Valk, De Lakenhal and Rembrandtpark. Choose accommodation based on access to the station and sights, buy tickets according to your interests and enjoy free entry to the Temple of Taffeh. These are three full days in Leiden within a longer trip, excluding international arrival and departure.
Who it is for: Brazilian travellers who want to explore Leiden on foot, choose tickets according to their interests and organise three full days within a longer Netherlands trip.Three full days, with visits grouped together
In Leiden, the route between visits is an outing in itself: you leave a fortification, cross canals and arrive at gardens, windmills and museums. We will divide the three days by sections of the city: the Burcht and historic centre on day one, the Hortus and Rapenburg on day two, and De Valk and De Lakenhal on day three. To control spending, choose the interiors that most interest you and enjoy the walks between them.
Reserve three full days for Leiden within a longer Netherlands trip, excluding international arrival and departure. If landing at Schiphol, research the train route to Leiden in the NS planner before booking a transfer. Check connections and changes for your date without relying on a fixed journey time.
Leiden Centraal combines train and bus terminals, and you can continue to the centre on foot. As you pass Stationsweg 26, stop at the tourist office to collect the free city map. It helps you follow this sequence of walks; if you also want the specific Rembrandt Route material, that is a separate purchase.
Where to stay: station or Rapenburg?
Look for accommodation near Leiden Centraal if you want an easier arrival with luggage and intend to continue by train. Open the address on a map before booking and check the route both to the station and to Rapenburg, where much of day two takes place.
The area around Rapenburg suits visitors who prefer to stay near gardens and archaeology: the Hortus is at number 73 and Rijksmuseum van Oudheden at 28. Use these two addresses as references when comparing accommodation and also check the route from the station.
To decide where your money goes further, compare options in both areas for the same dates, number of people and cancellation conditions. Look at the total cost of your stay and the route you will take with luggage. A location may make sightseeing easier without necessarily offering the lowest nightly rate.
Day 1: the Burcht, Koornbrug and central canals
Start at the Burcht, the raised fortification with a city view. Climb the stairs and take a look over Leiden before exploring its streets and canals. If the climb does not work for you, walk around the Burcht's surroundings and continue to Koornbrug.
Koornbrug tells part of the city's trading history: the old bridge associated with grain trading received its roof in 1834. Stop to look at the structure and canal, then continue towards Pieterskerk. This sequence brings different monuments together without spreading the first day across the entire city.
When you reach Pieterskerk, walk around the exterior before continuing to Young Rembrandt Studio. If you want to enter the church, check opening hours and access conditions before adding the visit.

From the Pieterskerk area, continue to Langebrug 89, the address of Young Rembrandt Studio. The house is associated with Rembrandt's training under Jacob van Swanenburgh, and the visit includes a projection lasting approximately seven minutes. It is worth entering if you are curious about the painter's education and want to connect that story with places along your walk.
Adults pay admission, so consider the Studio a brief visit chosen for its subject. Fit it into the afternoon: listed hours are Tuesday–Sunday, 12:00–17:00. Check possible changes before going.
If you prefer to save that admission cost, continue to Rapenburg to see the Egyptian Temple of Taffeh in Rijksmuseum van Oudheden's free entrance hall. Visit during museum hours and, with that stop already completed, leave more time for Van der Werffpark and Plantsoen on day two.
Day 2: a morning at the Hortus and lunch in the garden
Devote the morning to Hortus botanicus at Rapenburg 73, entering through the Academiegebouw gate. Explore the Japanese and Mediterranean gardens, old trees and greenhouse collections. This variety gives you plenty to discover even when your visit does not coincide with a particular bloom.
Admission is paid, and the garden itself suggests approximately two hours as a typical visit duration. In autumn and winter, from 21 September to 20 March, hours are 10:00–17:00; check closure dates before booking. Keep the morning for exploring the garden and follow it with lunch.
Hortus Grand Café offers a lunch stop without another journey: it serves lunch, coffee, tea and cakes, with indoor tables and a terrace. Check the menu and reservation options on the official website to choose what fits your budget.
You may also bring food and drinks and consume them outside the Hortus buildings. This is a way to reduce meal spending while continuing to enjoy the visit. Garden admission is still required.

Reserve the morning for the Hortus gardens and greenhouses before continuing along Rapenburg; vegetation changes with the season.

After the Hortus, continue along Rapenburg to number 28. At Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, you can see the Egyptian Temple of Taffeh in the Tempelzaal entrance hall without paying admission. To continue through the galleries, purchase a separate ticket.
If you want to remain outdoors, walk to Van der Werffpark and its central monument, then continue to Plantsoen beside Zoeterwoudsesingel. Plantsoen's paved paths and picnic areas invite you to extend the afternoon after the garden and temple.
In rain, stay at Rijksmuseum van Oudheden and explore the collections. The highlights route brings together 24 objects from Egypt, the classical world, the ancient Near East and the archaeology of the Netherlands, including a statue of Emperor Trajan. This alternative keeps the outing on Rapenburg and adds a substantial dose of archaeology to the day.
The collections' audio guide is included in admission, with English and Spanish versions; do not count on Portuguese. The museum lists daily opening from 10:00 to 17:00 and additionally on Thursdays from 19:00 to 22:00. Check holiday exceptions when fitting in the visit.
Day 3: De Valk inside or as a stop along the way
Open day three with De Valk, a tower windmill built in 1743 and converted into a museum in 1966. Inside, you see the miller's former home and reach an exterior gallery overlooking the city. Choose this visit if you want to add an experience different from gardens and art collections.
If you prefer to reserve the budget for De Lakenhal, view De Valk from outside and continue to Oude Singel. To enter, first check opening hours and visiting conditions. It is worth stopping to see the windmill even when its sails are still.

De Valk opens day three: the exterior stop pairs with the walk to De Lakenhal, and the interior adds the history of the miller's home.

From De Valk, continue to Museum De Lakenhal at Oude Singel 32. This is day three's art stop and, during Garden of Delights, a chance to encounter in paintings the themes of flowers and collections explored at the Hortus. See the exhibition's dates and highlights below.
Adults pay admission, and regular museum hours are Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–17:00. If your three days include a Monday, schedule the Hortus and Rapenburg for that date and leave De Lakenhal for another day, checking any exceptions.
After the visit, take a break at Café Laken at Oude Singel 30. The museum café also welcomes people exploring the city, so you can include it without entering the galleries. As it is next door, it is a convenient place to rest before continuing to De Put and Rembrandtpark.
Café Laken lists Tuesday–Sunday opening from 10:00 to 17:00 and accepts payment by card only. Check the day's offerings to choose your break.

On Oude Singel, combine a De Lakenhal visit with a break at Café Laken next door.

Visiting Leiden between 26 September 2026 and 29 March 2027? During this period, De Lakenhal presents Garden of Delights – The 17th Century in Bloom. The exhibition brings together paintings and objects from The Phoebus Foundation, featuring names such as Jan Brueghel, Clara Peeters and Jan Davidsz. de Heem, connecting flowers, science, collecting and contemporary design.
Here is a good reason to visit the Hortus before the museum: after walking among plants and living collections, you encounter other ways of observing and representing that world in art. Keep this order if the subject interests you, and check museum opening on your chosen date.
If you are in the city on 13 November 2026, Lakenhal Laat runs from 19:00 to 22:00, with a programme about cabinets of curiosities and collectors and participation by Ramsey Nasr. Consider adding this evening event if you want to explore the theme further after the day’s outings. Admission is paid: check the event’s own programme and ticket before booking.
Finish the walk with De Put and Rembrandtpark
After Café Laken, walk to De Put and Rembrandtpark. De Put was reconstructed in the 1980s: seeing it on the same day as De Valk introduces two windmills with different histories without adding another interior visit.
Rembrandtpark commemorates the painter’s birth in Weddesteeg. After the Studio on day one, this walk returns to Rembrandt’s story in another part of the city and ends the afternoon beside the canals.
The park fits into the Singelpark network, the series of parks along canals surrounding the historic centre and former fortifications. Finish at De Put and Rembrandtpark without needing to complete the entire circuit. If it rains and you still want to see archaeology collections, replace this walk with Rijksmuseum van Oudheden's galleries during opening hours.
Which tickets belong in your budget?
First choose what you most want to see, then add up admissions. For this combination of canals, gardens and museums, the Hortus and De Lakenhal are a good starting point. If archaeology interests you more than painting, choose Rijksmuseum van Oudheden instead of De Lakenhal.
To balance spending, include the free-access Temple of Taffeh and collect the city map at the tourist office for your walks. You can follow this itinerary without buying the Rembrandt Route material.
You can also keep De Valk as an exterior stop and replace the Studio with the temple on Rapenburg. This preserves the sequence of outings and concentrates the budget on visits you want to make. Check prices on official websites before purchasing and leave space in the day to walk and pause.
- Gardens and art: prioritise the Hortus and De Lakenhal, especially if your trip coincides with Garden of Delights.
- Gardens and archaeology: combine the Hortus with Rijksmuseum van Oudheden's galleries.
- Interest in windmills: consider an interior visit to De Valk to see the miller's former home and exterior gallery.
- Interest in Rembrandt: include the Studio for its presentation about his training, remembering that the projection is brief and adults pay admission.
Plan your checklist and budget around the itinerary
Open Mala Inteligente through the related link and turn the three days into a checklist: shoes you already find comfortable for walking, rain protection according to the forecast, reservations and chosen tickets. If bringing a snack to the Hortus, add it to the list and save that break for the permitted outdoor areas.
In the cost calculator, organise your estimates in Brazilian reais for accommodation, food, transport and tickets. Use figures you researched and already expressed in reais; the tool's reference values do not represent Netherlands prices, and it does not convert currencies. Treat the result as an editable estimate to decide, for example, whether to add De Valk or reserve that amount for a meal.
Before heading out, check payment methods: Café Laken accepts cards only. If using transport with OVpay, check in and check out with the same card or device.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation near Leiden Centraal | Travellers arriving by train who will make other rail journeys during the trip. | It simplifies station journeys. Also check the walk to Rapenburg and compare total reservation costs for your dates. |
| Accommodation around Rapenburg | Travellers who want to stay near the Hortus and Rijksmuseum van Oudheden. | It is convenient for day two, but check the route from the station with luggage. Compare prices and conditions for the same stay. |
| Hortus admission | Travellers keen on themed gardens, old trees and greenhouses. | Reserve a morning, using the approximately two hours suggested by the garden as a reference, and combine the outing with Rapenburg. |
| Museum De Lakenhal admission | Travellers interested in painting and, during Garden of Delights, the relationship between flowers, science and collecting. | It pairs well with the Hortus, but you need to plan around the museum’s opening days: it normally closes on Mondays. |

Questions to help you decide
Can the three days be followed without city transport?
You can follow this sequence on foot through the centre and the surrounding areas nearby. You can also walk from Leiden Centraal to the centre. Before booking accommodation, check its address and the route with luggage to decide whether you will need transport on arrival.
Does arrival via Schiphol count as day one?
No. Reserve three full days for Leiden sightseeing and count international arrival and departure separately. This itinerary is one part of a longer trip through the Netherlands.
Which tickets should I choose to limit spending?
For gardens and art, prioritise the Hortus and De Lakenhal. If you prefer archaeology, substitute Rijksmuseum van Oudheden's galleries for De Lakenhal. Include De Valk and Young Rembrandt Studio according to your interest in windmills and Rembrandt's training.
Is Rijksmuseum van Oudheden free?
You can enter the Tempelzaal, home to the Temple of Taffeh, free of charge. The galleries require paid adult admission. The café also welcomes visitors without a museum ticket, but food and drink are charged separately.
How can I adapt the itinerary if the stay includes a Monday?
Schedule the Hortus and Rapenburg for Monday, checking garden closure dates. De Lakenhal normally closes on Mondays, and Young Rembrandt Studio opens Tuesday–Sunday. Simply change the day order to accommodate those visits.
What is the specific rainy-day alternative?
Replace Van der Werffpark and Plantsoen with Rijksmuseum van Oudheden’s galleries on Rapenburg itself. The highlights route takes in collections from Egypt, the classical world, the ancient Near East and the archaeology of the Netherlands.
Is it cheaper to stay near the station or Rapenburg?
Compare both areas for your dates, with the same number of people and booking conditions. Near the station, rail journeys are easier; on Rapenburg, you are closer to the Hortus and antiquities museum. Choose according to the total price and the route that works best for you.
