Kanazawa in four days: gardens, food and November 2026 illumination
Four full days in Kanazawa, 12–15 November 2026: Kenrokuen, historic neighbourhoods, museums, meal breaks and autumn illumination.

GETTING STARTED
Allow four full days, 12–15/11/2026, for Kenrokuen and castle, Omicho Market and Higashi Chaya, Nagamachi and Oyama, and the 21st Century and D. T. Suzuki museums. The evening of 14/11 combines illumination with announced quartets; arrival on 11/11 and departure on 16/11 are excluded.
Who it is for: Brazilian travellers with four full days in Kanazawa within a longer Japan trip, interested in gardens, historic neighbourhoods, art and meal breaks.Four full days with a base that makes exploring easier
Plan four varied days in Kanazawa: begin with gardens and castle, visit the market and wooden houses of Higashi Chaya, discover Nagamachi and finish with contemporary art and reflection. Here we suggest arrival on 11/11/2026, sightseeing Thursday to Sunday, 12–15/11, and departure on 16/11. These are four full sightseeing days within a longer Japan trip; arrival and departure are excluded.
Choose accommodation around what makes your route easier. The station area favours journeys with luggage; Korinbo/Katamachi puts you closer to central sights. Official tourism states that the main attractions are concentrated within roughly two kilometres of the castle park. We suggest keeping one base and alternating walks with buses, allowing time to sit and eat between visits.
If coming from Tokyo, check Hokuriku Shinkansen services. Kagayaki requires reserved seating; choose the train according to your plans, without relying on a single journey time or guaranteed November availability.
Day 1: a Kenrokuen morning with time to look and drink tea
On Thursday, 12/11, devote the morning to Kenrokuen. Its hills, ponds, bridges and tea houses deserve a leisurely walk rather than rushing between famous spots. Include Kasumigaike Pond and find Yamazaki and Sazaeyama for different perspectives on the scenery. November usually brings autumn colours, but the stage of the leaves on your dates depends on the season.
Include Shigure-tei during the morning: it serves matcha or sencha with a Japanese sweet. This is a tea break in the garden, rather than lunch or a tea ceremony. The administration page lists an admission pause 12:00–13:00 for cleaning and possible unavailability for private use, so confirm service before planning around this stop.
Kenrokuen has gravel paths and slopes. For a comfortable day, take a break before continuing to the castle and choose the length of your walk according to the group’s pace.
An afternoon at the castle, or a switch to Seisonkaku Villa
After Kenrokuen, devote the afternoon to Kanazawa Castle. The complex becomes more interesting when you distinguish historic structures such as Ishikawa-mon from reconstructions such as Hishi Yagura, Gojukken Nagaya and Hashizume-mon. Notice the walls, roofs and relationship between buildings and open spaces rather than imagining that everything survived intact from the same period.
If historic houses interest you more, we suggest replacing part of the castle afternoon with Seisonkaku Villa beside Kenrokuen. Built in 1863, it adds residential architecture and Tsukushi-no-en and Omoto-no-en gardens to the day. For an indoor alternative on another theme, the Noh Museum presents masks and costumes. Choose one of these variations; you need not add all three to the main plan.
The castle park has a steep climb between Ninomaru and Gyokuseninmaru. Bear this in mind when deciding your route after the morning in the garden.

Hishi Yagura helps you examine the castle’s reconstructed architecture on the afternoon after the Kenrokuen walk.

On Friday, 13/11, begin at Omicho Market and have lunch there. We suggest Omicho Shokudo, listed in the market’s official directory. The restaurant describes seafood meals and raw, grilled and cooked preparations using products bought at the market. Choose what suits your preferences from the options actually available that day.
Putting Omicho before Higashi Chaya combines a market visit with a sit-down meal before the historic neighbourhood, without delaying lunch until mid-afternoon. Check restaurant service before leaving; the page does not guarantee a particular dish, price or absence of queues.
Higashi Chaya: explore the façades and enter a historic house
After lunch, head to Higashi Chaya beside the Asano River. Traditional wooden houses give the neighbourhood a unified character, but go beyond walking past façades. Our main suggestion is Shima, one of the houses JNTO identifies as open to visitors, adding an interior visit to the walk.
Kaikaro is a specific alternative if you prefer another house or need to adjust plans. Check hours before choosing and avoid feeling obliged to visit both: walking around the neighbourhood and stopping at Fumuro Chaya are part of the afternoon too. JNTO lists the Kanazawa Loop Bus to Hashibacho followed by a walk. Exploring the neighbourhood does not imply access to geisha performances.

After Omicho Market, the Higashi Chaya walk leads from wooden façades to a historic house visit.

After Shima or Kaikaro, take a break at Fumuro Chaya, 1-25-4 Higashiyama. Fumuro-ya presents its cafés and tea houses as serving dishes and sweets made with fu. This lets you try something connected with the company’s speciality without leaving the area; the official list does not guarantee a particular dish at this branch.
We suggest this stop near the end of the sightseeing afternoon, with time to notice façade details along the way. Lattices, eaves and lanterns deserve attention alongside broad street views. This section’s detail photograph is an archive image of the neighbourhood: it neither identifies Fumuro Chaya nor establishes that a tea house is operating.

Saturday, 14/11, begins in Nagamachi, a former samurai residential neighbourhood with earthen walls, narrow streets and canals. Walk around and enter Nomura residence: the restored house lets you view its garden from different rooms. After day one’s large garden, this offers landscape on a domestic scale.
Next, visit Shinise Kinenkan, a former merchant pharmacy turned museum. The combination extends the outing beyond samurai residences. If you prefer armour and objects associated with the Maeda, replace this visit with Maeda Tosanokamike Shiryokan.
Before Oyama Shrine, we suggest a break at FUMUROYA CAFÉ Kohrinbo Daiwa, 1-1-1 Korimbo, listed on the company’s current website. Choose from the available dishes and take the chance to sit down: the day still has an evening outing ahead.

Nagamachi’s walls and gates accompany the route to Nomura residence; its garden is part of the next visit.

After Nagamachi and the Korinbo break, go to Oyama Shrine at 11-1 Oyamacho. Its main gate, completed in 1875, combines Japanese, Chinese and Western influences. Stop to find this mixture before continuing around the grounds associated with Maeda Toshiie and his family.
The suggested visit covers the grounds and gate. Treasures shown in the website’s history section, including armour, are not publicly displayed. For buses, the listed access is Minamimachi/Oyama Shrine stop followed by a walk. Afterwards, we suggest a break at your accommodation before returning to Kenrokuen, giving the illumination its own outing and leaving you more rested for the evening.
Evening of 14/11/2026: back to Kenrokuen for illumination and music
Ishikawa’s official calendar, consulted on 22/10/2026, confirms Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen autumn illumination on 14 and 15/11/2026, within this itinerary’s dates. The event runs 18:00–21:00, with last admission at 20:45 and free entry during the programme. There is temporary closure in the preceding hour; arrange a return visit rather than expecting to remain continuously from daytime opening.
Our choice is Saturday, 14/11. String-quartet performances at Uchihashitei are announced for 18:15 and 19:00, enjoyed from the Kasumigaike Pond area. Returning to the pond you saw on Thursday lets you compare the scenery under different light and add music to the outing.
Sunday’s edition, 15/11, is an alternative if you change the order, but the evidence does not confirm that the quartets repeat that evening. Organisers allow for changes or cancellation in bad weather; check the official notice before leaving, including if Sunday is your second attempt.
Day 4: contemporary art and lunch at Fusion21
On Sunday, 15/11, begin at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, 1-2-1 Hirosaka. From Today to Tomorrow — On the Stewardship of a Work is confirmed for 31/10/2026–18/04/2027 in galleries 1–6 and the public area. It explores conservation, transformation and transmission of artworks, including installations and technology-based works: a good change of perspective after gardens and historic heritage.
Check exhibition and public-area access separately. Sunday was also chosen for practical reasons: the consulted calendar lists exhibition closure on 16/11/2026, the Monday suggested for departure. By bus, the museum lists Hirosaka/21st Century Museum or Korinbo stops.
For lunch, we suggest Fusion21 inside the museum. The operator describes contemporary French cuisine with Kaga vegetables and lists lunch 11:00–14:00. It offers a sit-down break before D. T. Suzuki Museum. Check service, as changes and private use may occur.
D. T. Suzuki Museum for a different pace at the end of the afternoon
After lunch, go to D. T. Suzuki Museum at 3-4-20 Honda-machi. The institution presents the Buddhist philosopher’s life and thought and offers a space for reflection. Pairing it with the 21st Century Museum brings a change of pace: after a morning exploring artworks and their conservation, the afternoon has a different approach.
Listed hours are 09:30–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Allow time to arrive and visit rather than treating last admission as the target. It closes on Mondays and may have interruptions for exhibition installation. If unavailability is announced, our alternative is the Noh Museum with masks and costumes, after checking opening. The Suzuki visit does not promise a class or guided meditation practice.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Stay near Kanazawa Station | You arrive and leave by train and want easier journeys with luggage. | On sightseeing days, combine buses with walks in central areas. |
| Stay in Korinbo/Katamachi | You prefer a base close to central sights, especially Nagamachi and the museum area. | Include station-to-accommodation journeys on arrival and departure. |
| Keep Kanazawa Castle for the first afternoon | You want to understand the castle’s architecture after the Kenrokuen morning. | Seisonkaku Villa can replace part of this visit rather than trying to fit in everything. |
| Replace part of the castle visit with Seisonkaku Villa | Residential architecture and gardens interest you more. | This leaves less time to explore the castle complex. |
| Attend the illumination on 14/11/2026 | You want to combine the illuminated landscape with the announced music programme. | Allow a break after Oyama; the programme may change or be cancelled in bad weather. |
| Use the 15/11/2026 illumination as an alternative | You prefer to finish Saturday early or need to rearrange visits. | It follows the museums, and the quartets in the calendar are announced for the 14th. |

Questions to help you decide
Do the four days include arrival and departure?
This itinerary uses four full sightseeing days in Kanazawa within a longer Japan trip. We suggest arriving on 11/11/2026, sightseeing from 12 to 15/11/2026 and leaving on 16/11/2026. Arrival and departure are excluded.
When is the November illumination?
Within this itinerary’s dates, illumination is confirmed for 14 and 15/11/2026, 18:00–21:00, with last admission at 20:45 and free admission during the event. There is a temporary closure in the preceding hour. The programme may change or be cancelled in bad weather.
Is there music on both illumination evenings?
For 14/11/2026, string-quartet performances are announced at 18:15 and 19:00 at Uchihashitei, enjoyed from the Kasumigaike Pond area. Available evidence does not confirm these performances for the 15th.
Will autumn colours be at their peak?
Official tourism presents November as a usual period for autumn colours at Kenrokuen. This does not guarantee the vegetation’s stage between 12 and 15/11/2026; the garden remains the central attraction on day one.
Is it better to stay near the station or in Korinbo?
The station area favours arrival and departure with luggage. Korinbo/Katamachi puts you closer to central sights. We suggest one of these bases for the whole stay, combining walking with buses.
Does Shigure-tei offer a tea ceremony?
No. Shigure-tei offers matcha or sencha with a Japanese sweet. It is a tea break inside the garden rather than a tea ceremony, and it does not replace lunch.
Can I leave the museums for departure Monday?
The itinerary places both museums on Sunday, 15/11/2026. The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art calendar consulted lists exhibition closure on 16/11; D. T. Suzuki Museum states Monday closure. Check the calendars again before travelling.
