Graz in four autumn days: art, gardens and truffles in October 2026
Four full days in Graz with the historic centre, Kunsthaus, Eggenberg gardens, markets and Styrian food, plus October 2026 truffle-market dates.

GETTING STARTED
Reserve four full days in Graz, plus arrival and departure: historic centre and Schlossberg; Lend, Kunsthaus and Styrian cooking; Eggenberg; and Kaiser-Josef-Markt, Landeszeughaus and Burggarten. The truffle market joins the centre day from 21 to 31 October 2026, except 26 October.
Who it is for: Brazilian travellers including Graz in a longer Austrian trip who want four full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure.Four sightseeing days, with the calendar working for you
You can discover very different sides of Graz in four days: begin among historic squares and courtyards, cross the Mur for contemporary art, devote a day to Eggenberg and finish with a market, armour and a garden. This sequence leaves time to look, sit and eat. These are four full city days, excluding arrival and departure, within a longer Austrian trip.
To include the truffle market and Eggenberg state rooms, October 2026 is the most coherent period, respecting the dates below. The published Eggenberg state-room and museum season runs until 31 October; do not transfer the entire itinerary to November without checking the programme.
Before numbering calendar days, fit Lendplatz and Kaiser-Josef-Markt into Tuesday-to-Saturday mornings outside public holidays: this pairs each market with a museum open on its regular calendar. If Monday is included, preferably use it for the historic centre and Schlossberg. Sunday can take Eggenberg according to guided-tour availability.
Day 1: Hauptplatz, Herrengasse and the Landhaus courtyard
Start at Hauptplatz. City Hall, Archduke Johann’s fountain and the surrounding façades offer plenty for an unhurried first circuit. Rather than immediately leaving for the next sight, observe the square from different positions: it helps you find your bearings before entering central streets.
Follow Herrengasse to Landhaushof. The Renaissance arcaded courtyard associated with architect Domenico dell’Allio adds a more intimate scale. The combination works because it links nearby places and alternates street, square and courtyard without spending the morning in transit.
There are then two concrete continuations. On truffle-market dates, visit Paradeishof before climbing Schlossberg. Otherwise, extend your walk through Sporgasse and Glockenspielplatz, both on the official central route, and save the afternoon for the hill.

Hauptplatz opens the central outing; continue along Herrengasse to the Landhaus courtyard.

In the afternoon, go up Schlossberg and allow at least two hours for the hill, as official tourism recommends. At Uhrturm, notice a detail that can initially confuse: the larger hand marks hours. The exterior tower visit is free; entering depends on separate guided-tour conditions.
You can climb 260 steps from Schlossbergplatz, use paths, take the funicular at Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai 38 or choose the lift entrance at Schlossbergplatz. Funicular and lift reduce uphill walking. Check each option separately; the funicular is part of zone 101 transport.
If it rains, the swap is straightforward: visit Kunsthaus if open and move Schlossberg to day two afternoon. In this arrangement, Murinsel can join the central walk. This preserves the outdoor outing without removing the art visit.

Leave time to stay on Schlossberg: Uhrturm is the starting point for exploring the hill.

The international truffle market is October’s best fit for this itinerary. The official calendar search on 9 October 2026 found autumn programming; this selection focuses on the market because it combines food and a historic-centre visit without a separate day.
The specific programme announces truffle-speciality and wine exhibitors at Paradeishof. Visit after Hauptplatz, Herrengasse and Landhaushof, compare the products and continue to Schlossberg. Do not count on free tastings or a complete meal: those conditions are not confirmed by the evidence.
If the stop takes longer than expected, move Schlossberg to the Lend afternoon. Preserve time to explore the hill. Note the trip-changing detail: this market will not take place on 26 October 2026. The dates above refer to the Paradeishof activity regardless of the broader announced festival period.
- Location: Paradeishof, Kastner & Öhler’s courtyard.
- Market dates: 21–31 October 2026, except 26 October.
- Published hours: 10:30–18:30.
Day 2: Styrian producers, Kunsthaus and an evening meal
Start day two at Lendplatz market on the Mur’s right bank. It brings together Styrian farmers’ produce and operates Monday to Saturday 06:00–13:00, except public holidays. Go in the morning and explore what stalls offer that day without depending on a particular product.
Then walk to Kunsthaus, Lendkai 1. The contemporary-art museum opened in 2003, and its blue organically shaped building changes the walking scenery. Allow around an hour and a half, adapting to your exhibition interests. Published opening is Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays 10:00–18:00, with exceptions worth checking.
The suggested break is Kunsthauscafé at Südtiroler Platz 2. Its website presents lunch, breakfast and dinner, plus vegetarian and vegan options. It is a fitting place to sit before continuing to the river; check its own hours, which differ from the museum’s.
In the afternoon, continue to Murinsel at Lendkai 19. Vito Acconci’s floating steel platform has two footbridges linked to the riverbanks, and visiting the structure is described as free. Putting it after Kunsthaus brings together two interventions linked to 2003, when Graz was European Capital of Culture.
Dinner suggestion: Der Steirer at Belgiergasse 1. Styrian cooking, small portions presented as tapas and seasonal choices continue the interest in regional produce that began the morning. Check current menus and bookings directly; the old weekly menu found in research cannot support promises of October dishes.

Kunsthaus changes the outing’s scale: after historic façades, day two brings you closer to contemporary art.

Devote day three to Eggenberg. The complex combines state rooms, park, Alte Galerie, Archaeology Museum and Coin Cabinet; there is plenty to choose from at leisure. Visit the state rooms, walk through the park and choose one museum without making every collection compulsory.
Organise the day around the mandatory guided state-room tour with limited participants. The published season is 28 March to 31 October 2026, Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays 10:00–18:00, with additional opening on 26 October. This opening interval does not mean guided tours leave at any moment.
The palace merits exterior observation too: its architecture uses numerical symbolism, including 365 exterior windows. Alternate the visit with park paths. The archival photograph shows autumn foliage, but tree appearance varies; include the gardens for outdoor time between interiors.
To complete the day, choose Alte Galerie for more art or the Archaeology Museum if that subject interests you more. Both have a listed season ending 31 October 2026. If state-room places are unavailable, one museum and the park form a concrete alternative according to their calendars.
Listed access is line 1 to Schloss Eggenberg followed by approximately 600 metres walking, or line 7 to Eggenberger Allee and around 650 metres on foot. Check the planner before leaving. Kunsthauscafé is a breakfast suggestion before the journey or a break on returning; plan lunch too, as this article’s sources do not confirm an establishment inside the complex.

At Eggenberg, leave room between the guided tour and chosen museum to explore the park.

Start day four at Kaiser-Josef-Markt behind the opera. Pumpkin-seed oil, Styrian beans, fruit and bread are among products described by official tourism. The visit adds concrete references to the regional cuisine encountered in the restaurant, although stall selections vary. The market operates Monday to Saturday 06:00–13:00, except public holidays.
Then head to Landeszeughaus at Herrengasse 16. Its collection preserves approximately 32,000 weapons, suits of armour and other historic equipment across four exhibition floors. This is a marked change after markets and contemporary art. Between April and October 2026, published opening is Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays 10:00–18:00.
If that collection does not appeal, swap the armoury for a longer Kunsthaus visit, crossing the Mur and checking the calendar. If keeping Landeszeughaus, continue to Burg at Hofgasse 15: the Gothic double staircase from 1499 has flights going in opposite directions that meet and separate again.
Finish at Burggarten beside Burg and above Stadtpark. Paths, trees, beds and benches make a pleasant pause after interiors. Admission is free, and the official page lists daily opening 08:00–19:00, with winter access through Burg’s courtyard. Skip the staircase and go directly to the garden if you prefer. If Der Steirer did not fit day two, it remains a farewell-dinner suggestion, subject to hours and booking confirmation.
Where to stay: historic centre or Lend?
For this itinerary, first compare accommodation around Hauptplatz and in Lend between Kunsthaus and Lendplatz. Near Hauptplatz, you begin day one in the historic centre, with Herrengasse and the Schlossberg route fitting the same walking pattern. This suits anyone wanting to step straight from accommodation into old streets.
In Lend, the strongest fit is day two: market, Kunsthaus, Kunsthauscafé and Murinsel. This base makes sense if you like starting near producers and contemporary art, crossing the river for central outings. Eggenberg requires transport planning from either area.
This choice concerns location. The sources do not support comparing rates, room quality or comfort at particular hotels. Check exact addresses and routes to the outings you most want to repeat rather than deciding solely by neighbourhood name.
Getting there, getting around and preparing the itinerary
Graz Hauptbahnhof has rail connections and public transport to the centre. For Graz Airport arrivals, the official page presents trains to the main station and taxis at arrivals. Check your chosen link for the travel date, keeping this journey outside the four visiting days.
In the city, combine walks with buses and trams, especially for Eggenberg. Altstadtbim offers free travel only on specified central sections — published examples include Südtiroler Platz–Kaiser-Josef-Platz on lines 1 and 7. Check boundaries before boarding; the rule does not cover the whole network.
With the sequence decided, use Mala Inteligente in the related block to build a checklist for walks, gardens and museum visits, adapting to the forecast shortly before departure. For the budget, use the calculator as an illustrative estimate in reais: enter your own accommodation, transport, admission and food figures. It does not provide exchange rates or international price quotes, and its reference figures should not be treated as Graz prices.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Stay near Hauptplatz | Anyone wanting to start at Hauptplatz and walk through the historic centre. | Lend is across the Mur, and Eggenberg still requires a separate journey. |
| Stay in Lend, between Kunsthaus and Lendplatz | Anyone preferring to stay near the farmers’ market, Kunsthaus and Kunsthauscafé breaks. | Herrengasse, Burg and the opera area require crossing the river; this choice does not assume lower rates. |
| Choose Alte Galerie at Eggenberg | Anyone wanting to combine the palace with an art-focused visit. | Allow time for the collection and leave the Archaeology Museum for another occasion. |
| Choose the Archaeology Museum at Eggenberg | Anyone more interested in archaeology than a second art visit. | It takes time that could otherwise go to Alte Galerie or a longer park walk. |
| Use Schlossberg’s funicular or lift | Anyone wanting to reach Schlossberg with less uphill walking. | Check each access option’s conditions; the free exterior Uhrturm visit does not automatically include transport. |

Questions to help you decide
Do the four days include arrival and departure?
This itinerary allows four full sightseeing days in Graz. Arrival and departure are excluded because it fits the city into a longer Austrian trip without using visiting time for travel.
When is Graz’s truffle market in 2026?
The specific programme confirms the market from 21 to 31 October 2026, 10:30–18:30, except 26 October. It is in Paradeishof, Kastner & Öhler’s courtyard. These market dates should not be confused with the wider festival period.
Which day should include the truffle market?
Combine Hauptplatz, Herrengasse and Landhaushof in the morning, visit the market in early afternoon and then continue to Schlossberg. Preserve at least two hours for the hill. If the market visit runs long, move Schlossberg to the afternoon originally devoted to Murinsel.
What matters most when arranging the days?
Lendplatz and Kaiser-Josef-Markt list Monday-to-Saturday hours of 06:00–13:00, closing Sundays and public holidays. Kunsthaus and Landeszeughaus normally open Tuesday to Sunday in the relevant calendar. Put both market-and-museum days between Tuesday and Saturday, excluding public holidays.
Can I keep the full Eggenberg visit in November?
The published state-room season ends on 31 October 2026, and entry requires a guided tour with limited places. The park and gardens have a separate calendar. For November, do not count on Eggenberg’s state rooms or museums without fresh official confirmation.
Is the historic centre or Lend better for a stay?
Hauptplatz favours historic-centre walks. Lend, between Kunsthaus and Lendplatz, better suits the contemporary-art and market day. The evidence supports comparing location, but not claiming which area is cheaper or recommending particular hotels.
How should I use Viajandar’s tools for this trip?
Use Mala Inteligente to turn activities into a checklist. In the calculator, build an estimate in reais using figures you edit yourself. It does not provide exchange rates or international price quotes, and its reference figures do not represent Graz prices.
