Diamantina in four days: the historic centre, Biribiri and Salitre
Four full days in Diamantina: museums, lunch near Mercado Velho, Biribiri, a booked Salitre visit and an alternative without repeating sights.

GETTING STARTED
Two days of museums and walks in the centre, one for Sentinela and Vila de Biribiri and another for a booked Salitre visit. The itinerary includes lunch near Mercado Velho, accommodation breaks and Cristais as an alternative to the cave. Arrival and departure are excluded from the four days.
Who it is for: First-time visitors to Diamantina who want to combine history, meal breaks and nature in comfort over four full sightseeing days.Four days between the historic centre and rocky landscapes
How about dividing Diamantina between stone streets, museums and two nature outings? During the first two days, explore the historic centre, have lunch near Mercado Velho and allow time to return to your accommodation between visits. Then discover Cachoeira da Sentinela, Vila de Biribiri and Gruta do Salitre’s rock walls. Vesperata can wait for another occasion: this trip does not depend on a performance.
These are four full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. Thursday to Sunday works well because it concentrates museums on Thursday and Friday. It is a selection for a first visit, with space to enjoy the stops rather than a promise to see everything.
Before finalising the order, try to book Salitre. If there is no availability, keep Sentinela and Vila de Biribiri on day three and save Cachoeira dos Cristais for day four. This gives the last day a different outing without repeating a museum you have already visited.
A central base for walking and breaks
For this sequence, consider accommodation in the historic centre. Many city attractions can be visited on foot, and staying nearby makes a room break after lunch or in the late afternoon easier. Compare the location with Mercado Velho and the itinerary’s museums; also check room access and parking if driving.
Belo Horizonte is an air gateway followed by a road journey: Diamantina lies about 300 km from the state capital. The municipal portal lists Pássaro Verde and Buser for checking this connection. Check departures before booking your stay, keeping this journey separate from the four sightseeing days.
For Biribiri and Salitre, we suggest a car or hired transport with stops and return agreed. If Cristais replaces Salitre, you will make two trips to Parque Estadual do Biribiri on different days. Include the second journey in the budget; this is the trade-off for having more time at the waterfalls.
Day 1: Museu do Diamante in Casa da Chica
Begin day one at Museu do Diamante from 10:00. Minerals, working tools, religious objects and utensils from the 18th and 19th centuries help put the houses you will see later into context. The visit prepares you to look at Mercado Velho with an understanding of how the city worked, consumed goods and obtained its supplies.
Pay attention to the address: the museum is temporarily housed in Casa da Chica da Silva at Praça Lobo de Mesquita, 266. Here, both names refer to the same stop. The historic Rua Direita premises are temporarily closed.
According to information consulted on 18 October 2026, admission is free and visits run Monday to Friday, 10:00–17:00; Saturdays depend on prior announcements. If you can start only in the afternoon, prioritise the museum and move Mercado Velho and Rua da Quitanda to the afternoon of day four.
Lunch near Mercado Velho and a walk along Quitanda
After the museum, stop for lunch at Restaurante Apocalipse, Praça Barão Guaicui, 78. Its location along the Mercado Velho route makes a meal convenient without another journey. Its own page lists meal categories, set dishes and desserts; check the available menu when ordering. Confirm dining-in service on (38) 3531-3242, as published hours may refer only to orders.
Next, stop at Mercado Velho, also called Centro Cultural David Ribeiro. Its origins in 1835 are connected with Black merchant Joaquim Cassimiro Lage and the muleteer trade. Keeping this history in mind adds to the walk: beyond the façades, you begin to see a city shaped by the movement of goods and people. The space has a cultural use, but check the programme before relying on a fair or performance.
Complete the afternoon along Rua da Quitanda, the setting for Vesperatas, and return to your accommodation. This first encounter with the street is worthwhile even without a performance. Leave Casa de Juscelino and the old printing works for the next day, when you will have time to go inside and enjoy the visits.

After lunch, Mercado Velho connects the centre walk with the history of muleteer trade.

Begin day two at Casa de Juscelino after confirming opening. Documents, personal objects and records of JK’s childhood and adolescence connect the figure with his life in Diamantina. The Júlia Kubitschek annexe extends the exhibition space. Take advantage of being nearby to look around Igreja de São Francisco de Assis without relying on going inside the church.
Take a lunch break in the centre — Apocalipse can be repeated for convenience — then continue to Rua da Glória. The elevated passage built in 1878 links two townhouses that housed a school and orphanage. View it from the street: UFMG states that restoration and visitor closure are ongoing, with reopening expected in 2027 but not yet guaranteed. The archive photograph helps you recognise the complex but predates the current works.
In the afternoon, visit Museu Tipografia Pão de Santo Antônio at Praça Professor José Augusto Neves, 171. The former workshop connected with the newspaper Pão de Santo Antônio, later called Voz de Diamantina, brings press history into the outing. After JK’s family memories and Casa da Glória’s architecture, it is another way to understand life in the city.
The municipal page lists free admission Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00. I suggest entering after 14:00 and returning to your accommodation afterwards. If Casa de Juscelino admits visitors only in the afternoon, reverse the order: Museu Tipografia at 10:00, the passage, lunch and JK at the confirmed time.

The passage links Casa da Glória’s townhouses; this itinerary views it from the street, and the photograph predates the current works.

On day three, swap museums for Cachoeira da Sentinela and Vila de Biribiri. Begin at Sentinela, with its small cascades and rest areas. The city council lists access along a dirt road approximately 7 km from the park gate, as well as a trail option. For this more comfortable sequence, plan to travel by road and confirm the final approach to the visit.
Then continue for a walk around Vila de Biribiri. The complex is connected with the textile factory that opened in 1876 and closed in 1973. Among the houses and hilly scenery, the walk adds an industrial history different from that of the central museums. Check the village’s separate fee before setting off.
Organise food as well: bring a snack or cold meal after checking park rules, and do not depend on finding an open village restaurant. With only Sentinela and Biribiri in the day, you can allow more time for walking, eating and returning to the centre.
If Salitre is already booked for day four and you want a busier outing, add Cachoeira dos Cristais. It lies about 12 km from the park gate along the dirt road. Agree the three-stop order with whoever provides transport, without treating distances as promises of journey time. Sentinela and Cristais list visits 08:00–17:00.
Without a Salitre booking, keep Cristais for the following day. Make this choice before setting off: Sentinela and the village on Saturday, Cristais on Sunday. This keeps the day-four alternative a new visit.

Walking through Biribiri adds the history of a village connected with the former textile factory to the day.

Gruta do Salitre changes the scenery on day four: quartzite formations, a canyon, fissures and rock walls replace the houses. Near Curralinho, about 9 km from Diamantina according to the city council, it also preserves a history of saltpetre extraction. Devote the morning to this landscape and leave the afternoon for the centre.
Booking with Instituto Biotrópicos is compulsory at [email protected]. Agree the time and visit guidance before arranging transport. If availability is in the afternoon, walk along Rua da Quitanda in the morning, have lunch and head to the cave at the agreed time.
If Salitre has no availability, spend the morning at Cachoeira dos Cristais, keeping day three for only Sentinela and Vila de Biribiri. This is a second park trip, with return transport and food organised. Listed visiting hours are 08:00–17:00; check access conditions with management on (38) 3532-6698 or at [email protected].
After the morning outing, return to the centre for lunch. Apocalipse can be an option again if the dining room serves on Sunday; confirm before travelling. In the afternoon, walk along Rua da Quitanda, or visit Mercado Velho and Quitanda if they were left out on day one. Then enjoy a break at your accommodation: the day’s main outing is done, and you need not fill every hour.

Salitre’s rock walls bring a different landscape to day four on a visit that must be booked before setting off.

Rua da Quitanda is the setting for Vesperatas, with musicians on balconies. Seeing the street is already part of the itinerary, but attending a performance requires a confirmed date. When checked on 18 October 2026, the published calendar did not confirm a Vesperata after that date.
The annual and weekly calendars also did not allow other future events to be confirmed; this does not mean the city has no programme. Check the municipal portal shortly before the trip. If an attraction with a confirmed date appears, include it on a free evening without competing with museums or nature outings.
From itinerary to checklist and expense estimate
With the sequence chosen, use the packing tool to turn the trip into a checklist. Enter the total duration, adding arrival and departure to the four sightseeing days, and select the weather and traveller profiles. Check the forecast before choosing clothes and pay particular attention to footwear for stone streets and clothing for Biribiri and Salitre days.
In the Cost Calculator, start with the Comfort profile and enter destination, days and number of people. The tool gives an illustrative estimate in reais for accommodation, meals, transport and a 15% buffer; it is not a quote. Compare the result with the prices you obtain and check nature-trip transport separately. If Cristais replaces Salitre, add the second park trip to your costs.
To keep exploring the city, open Viajandar’s Diamantina page, which brings together municipal information and routes to local services. Use these links to complete preparations after deciding museum days and the Salitre booking.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Four days from Thursday to Sunday | Anyone who can include Thursday and Friday in the trip. | This makes museum visits easier. Arrival and departure are on separate days, and opening at Casa de Juscelino needs confirmation. |
| A base in the historic centre | Anyone who wants to rest at their accommodation between outings. | It puts city walks closer; check the exact location, access to the room and parking if needed. |
| Sentinela and Vila de Biribiri on day three; Salitre on day four | Anyone who has booked the cave visit. | It combines two different landscapes and leaves out Cristais, allowing breaks and lighter afternoons. |
| Sentinela and the village on day three; Cachoeira dos Cristais on day four | Anyone unable to book Salitre who wants to keep four sightseeing days. | It offers a different final-day visit but requires a second trip to Parque Estadual do Biribiri with separate transport and food arrangements. |
| Sentinela, Vila de Biribiri and Cristais on the same day | Anyone with Salitre confirmed who prefers a busier third day. | It reduces time at each stop and requires agreeing the sequence with your transport provider while observing waterfall visiting hours. |
Your itinerary, ready to save
Day 1 — suggested Thursday: Museu do Diamante and Mercado Velho
Begin from 10:00 at Museu do Diamante in Casa da Chica da Silva. Have lunch at Apocalipse on Praça Barão Guaicui after confirming dining-in service. Then look around Mercado Velho, walk along Rua da Quitanda and return to your accommodation to rest.
Prefer an alternative? If starting only in the afternoon, go to Museu do Diamante first, as it lists closing at 17:00. Move Mercado Velho and Rua da Quitanda to the afternoon of day four.Day 2 — suggested Friday: Casa de Juscelino, the elevated passage and printing history
Visit Casa de Juscelino after confirming opening and look around Igreja de São Francisco. Take a lunch break in the centre; Apocalipse can be repeated for convenience. Then see Passadiço da Glória from the street and visit Museu Tipografia Pão de Santo Antônio after 14:00.
Prefer an alternative? If Casa de Juscelino admits visitors only in the afternoon, visit Museu Tipografia at 10:00, see Casa da Glória from outside and have lunch before continuing to JK at the confirmed time.Day 3 — suggested Saturday: Sentinela and Vila de Biribiri
Set off with return transport and food organised. Visit Cachoeira da Sentinela in the morning, then continue for a walk around Vila de Biribiri. This combination leaves time for breaks and the return to the centre without adding a third visit. Sentinela lists visiting hours of 08:00–17:00.
Prefer an alternative? With Salitre already booked for day four, you can add Cachoeira dos Cristais to the Biribiri outing. Agree the three-stop sequence with your transport provider and accept less time at each one. Without a Salitre booking, save Cristais for the following day.Day 4 — suggested Sunday: booked Salitre visit and an afternoon in the centre
Visit Gruta do Salitre in the morning at the time booked with Instituto Biotrópicos. Return to the centre for lunch; Apocalipse is an option if the dining room serves on Sunday. Complete the afternoon with a short Rua da Quitanda walk, or Mercado Velho and Quitanda if they were left out of day one.
Prefer an alternative? If Salitre has no availability, visit Cachoeira dos Cristais in the morning, provided day three included only Sentinela and the village. Arrange a second park trip and return to the centre for lunch and rest. If your Salitre booking is in the afternoon, walk along Quitanda and have lunch before heading to the cave. Before you go

Questions to help you decide
Do the four days include arrival and departure?
No. These are four full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. The itinerary combines the historic centre, Biribiri and Salitre without claiming to cover all of Diamantina.
Which weekdays work best for the itinerary?
Thursday to Sunday works well: Thursday and Friday for museums, Saturday for Biribiri and Sunday for a booked Salitre visit. For other combinations, allow at least two days between Wednesday and Friday for city visits and check each attraction’s hours.
Are Museu do Diamante and Casa da Chica da Silva two visits?
They are one stop in this itinerary. Museu do Diamante is temporarily housed in Casa da Chica da Silva at Praça Lobo de Mesquita, 266. Its historic Rua Direita premises are temporarily closed.
Can I visit inside Casa da Glória?
UFMG information consulted on 18 October 2026 states that it is closed to visitors for restoration, with reopening expected in 2027 but not guaranteed. Plan to view the elevated passage from the street and visit Museu Tipografia Pão de Santo Antônio on the same day.
How can I keep four days if Salitre has no availability?
Before the trip, plan day three around Cachoeira da Sentinela and Vila de Biribiri and save Cachoeira dos Cristais for day four. This gives the last day a different visit, followed by lunch and rest in the centre. The alternative requires a second park trip; arrange transport and check access conditions.
Do I need a car throughout my stay?
Many historic-centre sights can be visited on foot. For Biribiri and Salitre, we suggest a car or hired transport with the outward journey, stops and return agreed. Transport to Salitre does not replace the visit booking.
Is it worth planning the trip without a Vesperata?
Yes. Museums, Mercado Velho, the elevated passage and nature outings make the itinerary worthwhile. The calendar consulted on 18 October 2026 did not confirm a Vesperata after that date; the search for other future events was inconclusive.
Where should I stop for lunch on day one?
Restaurante Apocalipse at Praça Barão Guaicui, 78, works well for lunch between Museu do Diamante and Mercado Velho. Confirm dining-in service on (38) 3531-3242: hours on the ordering page may apply only to that service.
