Three full days in Coimbra: university, gardens and cafés without a car
Three full days in Coimbra with the university, Botanical Garden, monasteries and Café Santa Cruz: where to stay, getting around and visits to prioritise.

GETTING STARTED
Spend three full days in Coimbra combining the university and Sé Velha; the Botanical Garden, Penedo da Saudade and Santa Cruz; then Santa Clara-a-Velha and the Mondego. See how to choose Baixa or Alta for accommodation, prioritise tickets and fit in coffee and fado. Arrival and departure are excluded.
Who it is for: Brazilians spending three full days in Coimbra as part of a longer Portugal trip who want to combine history, gardens and cafés without hiring a car.Three days exploring Coimbra between hill and river
In Coimbra, you can leave the university’s rooms for a garden, descend to the tombs of Portugal’s first kings and end the day with coffee and fado. To enjoy this variety without spending time repeatedly climbing and descending the same slopes, distribute outings by area: the university and Sé Velha on the first day; the Botanical Garden, Penedo da Saudade and Santa Cruz on the second; Santa Clara-a-Velha and the Mondego on the third.
These are three full days in Coimbra within a longer Portugal trip, excluding arrival and departure. That way, train travel does not compete with Biblioteca Joanina’s timed admission, and the Café Santa Cruz break fits without rushing to collect luggage.
To look after the budget, take advantage of the free individual Botanical Garden visit, check everything included in the university ticket and choose other interiors according to what interests you most. The order can change: fit the Joanina booking first and keep Santa Clara-a-Velha off Monday, when the monastery closes.
Where to stay: Baixa for café and river, Alta for historic visits
For this itinerary, begin your accommodation search in Baixa between Portagem and Praça 8 de Maio. You will be near Santa Cruz and the café, and the area suits the return from outings by the Mondego. Compare the total stay cost and exact address: the location helps journeys but does not guarantee a lower nightly rate.
Alta near Sé Velha and the university makes more sense if you want to devote more time to Paço das Escolas and Museu Machado de Castro. Consider slopes when going to Baixa, especially on the journey with luggage. Before booking, check how to reach the accommodation’s door from the station.
If arriving from Lisbon or Porto, research trains from Lisboa-Oriente or Porto-Campanhã to Coimbra-B, with Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services. Check times and fares for your date. For the final leg, Metro Mondego’s planner lets you search connections via Coimbra B, Portagem and República; consult it before deciding on a taxi.
You can organise the three days without hiring a car. Visiting the university and Sé Velha together, and combining Santa Clara-a-Velha with the Mondego, reduces backtracking. When choosing what to walk, take the climbs into account and use public transport when it makes a journey easier.
Which tickets deserve a place in your budget
Begin with the place you are determined to explore inside. If that is Biblioteca Joanina, book the university before distributing the rest of the budget. The independent-visit ticket is valid for two days, letting you split included spaces without buying another visit for the same thing.
Then choose interiors by interest and check prices on the visiting pages. You can observe Sé Velha from outside and devote more time to Machado de Castro, for example. The Botanical Garden provides a free outing, while the other tickets focus on experiences you want to have.
- University: put it at the top of the list if Joanina is a reason for the trip. Check included spaces and ticket validity.
- Sé Velha: choose the interior visit to observe the altarpiece and cloister as well as exterior architecture.
- Santa Cruz: enter to see Afonso Henriques and Sancho I’s tombs and check access to other circuit spaces.
- Machado de Castro: reserve time and budget for sculpture, painting, goldsmithing and Roman galleries.
- Santa Clara-a-Velha: combine outdoor ruins and the Interpretation Centre to understand convent life.
- Botanical Garden: enjoy the free individual visit; check greenhouse and special activity access separately.
Day 1: begin at the university, with a reserved time for Joanina
Begin the first day at Paço das Escolas. Biblioteca Joanina is the timed commitment; fit Capela de São Miguel and the Royal Palace before or after it according to the spaces included in the ticket. This sequence concentrates the morning at the university before continuing to Sé Velha.
Pay attention to the time printed on the ticket: it corresponds to Joanina entry, and missing it means losing library access. Arrive with a margin and avoid booking another long visit immediately before it.
The independent-visit ticket is valid for two days. To distribute the spaces, keep Joanina at the reserved time and check opening for the others. On 21 October 2026, the Tower was listed as closed, so it is not included in the outing. Also check ceremony notices, which may alter the circuit.

Begin at Paço das Escolas and organise visits around the reserved Biblioteca Joanina time.

After the university, allow a lunch break before continuing to Sé Velha on the square of the same name. Its fortified appearance invites an exterior look; inside, the main chapel altarpiece and cloister begun in 1218 provide other reasons to stay. The cathedral was consecrated in 1184 and hosted Sancho I’s coronation the following year.
Also observe the Renaissance Porta Especiosa and compare its details with the cathedral’s Romanesque architecture. This stop rewards slowing down to look. Check admission conditions to include the interior and cloister, then continue downhill towards Baixa.
If art and archaeology arouse more curiosity, replace Sé Velha’s interior with Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro at Largo Dr. José Rodrigues. The former Episcopal Palace brings together sculpture, painting and goldsmithing, while Roman galleries on two levels beneath the building are associated with ancient Aeminium’s forum. You can also combine cathedral and museum if you reserve the afternoon for both. Check opening and save this alternative for day two if rain disrupts Penedo da Saudade.
Day 2: the Botanical Garden and Penedo da Saudade’s verses
Open the second day at the university’s Botanical Garden. Informal individual visits are free and need no booking: you can walk areas open to the public and save your budget for chosen interiors. The Tropical Greenhouse and guided visits have their own conditions, so check access if you want to include them.
Between 1 October and 31 March, the garden opens 09:00–17:30. Before leaving, check closure notices and temporarily restricted areas. There are limitations for reduced mobility and pushchairs; consult route conditions if relevant to you.
Next, continue to Penedo da Saudade to read inscriptions and verses linked to Coimbra’s academic memory. The combination introduces two gardens with different interests before descending to Baixa. Allow lunch before Santa Cruz; if you prefer a longer morning at the Botanical Garden, omit Penedo and keep the monastery-and-café afternoon.

In the afternoon, go to Praça 8 de Maio and enter Mosteiro de Santa Cruz to see the tombs of Afonso Henriques and Sancho I. The outing brings you closer to Portugal’s first kings and can include the Cloister of Silence, choir stalls, Sacred Art Museum and relic sanctuary. Check the ticket and access to each space before visiting.
Then sit down at Café Santa Cruz on the same square. The break fits the end of the walk and offers a house pastry to discover: Crúzio, made with sweet egg filling and toasted almonds. Ask whether it is available that day and enjoy a coffee before continuing, or staying for the music.
To hear Coimbra fado, try fitting the 18:00 performance as the day’s conclusion. The programme announced by the café on 21 October 2026 provides performances at 18:00 and 22:00 daily, except the 22:00 session on Sundays, with free admission. Confirm the performance for your date; food and drinks are charged separately.

Devote the third morning to Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha on Rua das Parreiras across the Mondego. Combine the ruins walk with the Interpretation Centre: objects found in excavations and the exhibition on convent life help explain what you see on the site.
Between 15 October and 31 March, the monastery opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30. It closes on Mondays and certain holidays; confirm notices on the monument’s page before leaving. As part of the visit takes place outdoors, consider the forecast.
After the visit and lunch, continue to Ponte Pedro e Inês and cross the Mondego on foot. Continue through Parque Verde and, to extend the walk, Parque Manuel Braga before returning to Baixa. The afternoon is devoted to the river and parks after the morning’s ruins.
If this day falls on Monday, swap it with the Botanical Garden and Penedo da Saudade outing, also checking Santa Cruz and café opening. This keeps Santa Clara-a-Velha in the itinerary without relying on a rushed visit before departure.

Will you be in Coimbra with children on 24 October 2026? The Botanical Garden has the Tons de outono workshop, 15:00–16:30, for families with children aged 6 to 10. The activity combines a storytelling session with Miguel Gouveia of BRUAÁ and a workshop, meeting at the Arcos gate. It adds stories and participation to the garden visit.
Registration is paid, announced capacity is ten children and the deadline is 21 October 2026. Confirm a place before changing the itinerary. With registration secured, omit Penedo da Saudade and stay at the Botanical Garden for the afternoon activity. Santa Cruz and the café can move to day three: after Santa Clara-a-Velha and crossing Ponte Pedro e Inês, shorten the park walk and head to Praça 8 de Maio.
The workshop is specific to 24 October 2026. For other dates, consult Coimbra’s calendar and check details of any programme of interest before fitting it between visits.
Prepare your luggage and organise trip spending
With outings chosen, open Mala Inteligente and enter the full Portugal trip duration, including arrival and departure, plus traveller profiles and expected climate. Turn the result into a checklist: review footwear for slopes, clothing layers and rain protection according to the forecast.
To build a Coimbra budget, record prices researched in euros for accommodation, trains, the accommodation connection, food and admissions. Add expenses and convert to reais using a separately obtained reference. Viajandar’s calculator works with initial estimates in reais without exchange rates or international quotations; for this trip, use the euro prices you found.
Before buying, check whether the accommodation address makes journeys easier and whether the university ticket already covers the spaces you want to visit. These two decisions help avoid travel expenses and duplicate purchases, leaving more room for the museum, monastery or Café Santa Cruz break you chose to include.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Stay in Baixa between Portagem and Praça 8 de Maio | You want to finish outings near Café Santa Cruz and combine the historic city with the Mondego. | It makes the suggested second and third days easier, but the university and Sé Velha are uphill in Alta. Compare the address and total stay cost: Baixa does not guarantee a lower nightly rate. |
| Stay in Alta near Sé Velha or the university | You prioritise Paço das Escolas, Sé Velha and Museu Machado de Castro. | It puts you close to the first day’s historic visits. Consider the slopes when travelling with luggage and going to Baixa. |
| Prioritise the university ticket | You want to explore Biblioteca Joanina, Capela de São Miguel and the Royal Palace. | Joanina requires keeping your reserved time. Check included spaces before buying another visit; the independent-visit ticket is valid for two days. |
| Make an individual visit to the Botanical Garden | You enjoy gardens and want to balance paid and free outings. | It requires neither payment nor booking. The Tropical Greenhouse and guided activities have their own conditions, and some areas may be temporarily closed. |
| Set aside time and budget for Museu Machado de Castro | You are interested in sculpture, painting and Roman archaeology. | It can replace Sé Velha’s interior or Penedo da Saudade in rain. Check admission and opening before adjusting the day. |
| Keep Santa Clara-a-Velha on the third day | You want to explore the ruins and understand convent life on the Mondego’s other bank. | The visit combines an outdoor route with the Interpretation Centre. Arrange the calendar to avoid Monday, when the monastery closes. |

Questions to help you decide
Are these three full days in addition to arrival and departure?
Yes. This itinerary reserves three days for Coimbra outings within a longer Portugal trip. Arrival and departure are excluded. If a train takes part of one of these days, reduce visits before booking Biblioteca Joanina’s time.
Do I need to hire a car for these outings?
You can follow the itinerary without hiring a car by grouping visits by area. For arrival, consult trains to Coimbra-B and plan the accommodation connection on Metro Mondego’s website. Within the city, account for the slopes between Baixa and Alta when choosing walking legs.
Is it better to stay in Baixa or Alta?
Begin searching in Baixa between Portagem and Praça 8 de Maio to be near Santa Cruz, the café and riverside outings. Alta better suits those prioritising the university, Sé Velha and Machado de Castro. Compare nightly rate, address and the luggage route: neither area guarantees savings.
Which ticket deserves priority?
If Biblioteca Joanina is a reason for visiting Coimbra, start with the university ticket. Then choose by interest: Sé Velha for religious architecture, Santa Cruz for Portuguese monarchy history, Machado de Castro for art and archaeology, Santa Clara-a-Velha for ruins and convent life. Check what each ticket includes to avoid overlapping purchases.
Is the Botanical Garden free?
Informal individual visits are free and require no booking. The Tropical Greenhouse, guided visits and special activities have their own access conditions.
Can I hear Coimbra fado at Café Santa Cruz?
The programme announced by the café on 21 October 2026 provides daily performances at 18:00 and 22:00, except 22:00 on Sundays, with free admission. Confirm the session for your date; coffee, pastries and other purchases are charged separately.
Which outing should I replace if it rains?
Swap Penedo da Saudade for Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro after checking opening. Santa Clara-a-Velha has an Interpretation Centre but also an outdoor route, so weather still needs attention.
