Three days in Brno without a car: what is worth paying for and what is free
Brno in three days without a car: where to stay, paid visits to prioritise and free walks linking the historic centre, parks, reservoirs and villas.

GETTING STARTED
Use the historic centre and parks as the free basis of your itinerary, and choose paid visits according to your interests: the reservoirs for industrial architecture or Tugendhat’s interiors for a more detailed villa visit. In three full days, combine Zelný trh and Petrov; Špilberk and Žlutý kopec; and Lužánky and the villas, choosing accommodation to suit your journeys.
Who it is for: Brazilian travellers wanting architecture, parks, history and food in three full sightseeing days in Brno without a car, within a longer Central European trip.Where to spend money, and where walking is enough
You can plan three full days in Brno without buying a ticket at every stop. We suggest using the historic centre and parks as the basis of your itinerary, and choosing interior visits that add something you want to see. For lovers of industrial architecture, Žlutý kopec reservoirs are our first choice of paid attraction; if you want to explore inside a modernist home, look first at Tugendhat’s guided tour.
The Old Town Hall tower and Špilberk casemates are additional options. The gardens at Löw-Beer and Tugendhat let you include the villas without paying to see the interiors. The following sequence covers three full sightseeing days within a longer trip through Central Europe, with arrival and departure counted separately. It offers a selection of Brno’s sights, rather than a complete itinerary for Czechia.
Where to stay for convenient access to the itinerary
For this itinerary, start by comparing accommodation in the centre, between the main station, Zelný trh and náměstí Svobody. This is a location suggestion: the railway station is in the centre, and this area works for both arrival and the first day’s walks. Check the exact address on a map, because the word “central” alone tells you little about the journey with luggage.
The area around Lužánky and Drobného street makes sense if the villas are your priority. Before choosing, check connections to the station and centre in DPMB’s journey planner. Compare the total cost of the stay alongside your intended journeys; neither area guarantees a lower nightly rate. Accommodation that suits your routes may be more useful than a rate that looks attractive on its own.
Without a car: walk by area and use transport where useful
Brno can fit a trip through Prague or Vienna, with train and bus connections described in Brno University of Technology’s guide. Check service for your date without building connections around an assumed duration. In the city, trams, buses and trolleybuses complement walking.
Grouping attractions is the first transport saving: centre and Petrov together; Špilberk and reservoirs another day; Lužánky and villas on the third. Use DPMB to shorten walks or return to accommodation. If choosing contactless payment, the details below help avoid unexpected charges.
- Tap your card or device on every boarding, including transfers.
- For journeys under 15 minutes, also tap out for the short ticket, using the same card or device.
- Automatic payment covers zones 100 and 101; other zones require an appropriate ticket.
- The charging cap applies per calendar day. It differs from a 24-hour ticket and does not turn several days’ use into a multi-day pass.
Day 1: Zelný trh and an optional climb up the Old Town Hall tower
Begin day one at Zelný trh, the historic market square. Pause at Parnas fountain to look at its sculptures and the surrounding façades before moving on. A walk around the square is worthwhile even if the market stalls are not open. Then follow Radnická towards the Old Town Hall.
At the Town Hall, look for the portal with its crooked pinnacle and the references to the dragon and wheel from local legends. Decide whether to pay for the tower this morning: it has 173 steps for those who want the view. If this type of climb is not a priority, continue to Petrov. You do not need a tower ticket to make the walk around the centre worthwhile.

Parnas fountain offers a clear starting point for exploring Zelný trh before continuing along Radnická.

Continue to Petrov to observe the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, a landmark of Brno’s skyline. The proposed outing covers the architecture and surroundings. To enter the church, climb towers or visit other spaces, check corresponding conditions: they are distinct experiences, not one single free visit.
Then continue to Denisovy sady. Its paths, obelisk and connection to the Capuchin gardens extend the outing without adding another ticket. This is a good time to sit down and take a break from walking before returning to the centre for dinner.

After Petrov, Denisovy sady’s paths invite a slower pace on the centre outing.

To end day one, we suggest Lokál U Caipla, Kozí 115/3. The restaurant describes its links to the tradition of an old local inn and publishes lunch and evening menus. We chose it for its location and food: you return to the centre for a meal without adding another long journey. Check the menu and service for your date, without counting on a particular dish or assuming it will be the cheapest option.
On the day you visit the villas, Café Löw-Beer offers a convenient break in the villa’s own garden. Schedule this stop between Lužánky and Tugendhat, particularly if you have a reservation later. The café has its own service hours; an open garden does not guarantee that the café is serving at the same time.
Day 2: Špilberk, with a Staré Brno basilica alternative
On the morning of day two, walk up through Špilberk park. The paths and views make the hill worth exploring in its own right, before you even decide whether to visit an exhibition. At the top, explore the outside of the castle complex, which houses Brno City Museum. The casemates are an additional expense for those interested in this space; do not assume that all of the castle is free.
The suggested route then continues to Žlutý kopec reservoirs. If you prefer to stay outdoors and avoid paying for that visit, head to Mendlovo náměstí in Staré Brno to see the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady. Its Gothic architecture, built mainly of brick, adds a different type of building to the day. This alternative involves viewing the exterior: the historical leaflet does not confirm current access to the interior.

Špilberk and Staré Brno’s basilica share a day if you choose the walk to Mendlovo náměstí.

Žlutý kopec reservoirs offer a change of scale: three underground structures dating from 1874, 1894 and 1917, two made of brick and one of concrete. This combination of materials and vast spaces makes them our first choice of paid visit for anyone interested in industrial architecture. Self-guided and guided visits are available; choose the type before planning your afternoon.
The address is Tvrdého 15. When consulted on 9 October 2026, the listed hours were Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:00. Allow time for lunch between Špilberk and this visit, so you do not arrive close to the last admission time. Check the hours for your date and remember that these are the Žlutý kopec reservoirs, separate from those at Špilberk.
Day 3: Lužánky, Löw-Beer and Tugendhat, with optional paid interiors
On day three, start from Moravské náměstí along Třída Kapitána Jaroše and cross Lužánky. The public park, with an artificial stream and neo-Renaissance pavilion, gives the villa route a relaxed opening. Continue to Villa Löw-Beer, Drobného 297/22: garden and garden gallery have free entry within their respective hours.
After a break at Café Löw-Beer, follow the free connection between the gardens to Tugendhat. The institution lists free entry to the garden and technical-floor exhibitions, without a guide, during opening hours. These already provide plenty to explore; the guided tour of the interiors is a separate choice. Tugendhat lists opening from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00, and the garden may close in adverse weather.
If interior architecture is your main interest, look for a guided tour of Tugendhat and plan the day around your booking time. As a paid alternative, Villa Löw-Beer’s permanent exhibition covers the Jews of Moravia, the house and its inhabitants. Check the route carefully: Tugendhat itself states that the connection through Löw-Beer’s garden is unsuitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs. If this affects you, consult the institution about access before deciding on your route.

The garden allows views of Tugendhat’s façade and completes the Lužánky and Löw-Beer route.

If visiting on 14–18 October 2026, consider the 67th BRNO16 International Short Film Festival. Confirmed by the organiser, it offers a way to vary the evening after parks and architecture.
We suggest fitting a screening into the evening that best suits the programme. Check venue, time, language, subtitles and participation conditions before arranging dinner. For other dates, consult Brno’s official programme: research on 9 October accessed only part of the listing and cannot establish an absence of other events.
Finalise tickets and turn the itinerary into a checklist
Choose your paid visits first, then compare individual tickets with the version of BRNOPAS+ that includes the reservoirs, available for one, two or three days. Žlutý kopec is included in that specific version. Add up only the visits you intend to use and check the conditions: admission included in a paid pass still has a cost, and free gardens do not help justify buying it.
Once you have organised the days, use the plan to create a checklist in Mala Inteligente. Enter the duration of the entire trip, including arrival and departure, and the traveller profiles. Check footwear for walking and stairs, clothing suited to the forecast and reservation confirmations. The tool’s climate selection helps build the checklist, but it does not replace a weather forecast.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Zelný trh, Petrov and Denisovy sady | For those wanting to explore the centre and save the budget for a few interior visits. | Walking around the square, cathedral surroundings and gardens needs no tickets; towers and other interior spaces must be considered separately. |
| Old Town Hall tower | For those who particularly want a panorama from a tower. | An optional expense involving a climb of 173 steps. Choose this view if it interests you, without feeling you need to pay for several viewpoints. |
| Žlutý kopec reservoirs | For those who enjoy industrial architecture and underground spaces. | Our first choice of paid visit for this interest. Plan around its opening hours and check which type of ticket you need. |
| Špilberk park | You want to walk among trees and explore the castle complex. | Explore the hill outdoors without buying exhibition tickets; the casemates and interior tours are separate choices. |
| Löw-Beer and Tugendhat gardens and Tugendhat’s technical exhibition | You want to include the villas while keeping costs under control. | Free options during their respective opening hours. They do not include Tugendhat’s guided interior visit. |
| Tugendhat interiors or Villa Löw-Beer’s exhibition | You want to explore architecture or history in more depth. | Choose by interest and availability: Tugendhat’s guided visit or the history of Moravian Jews, the villa and its inhabitants at Löw-Beer. |
| BRNOPAS+ with reservoirs | For those already planning several paid attractions. | Compare conditions with the tickets actually chosen. Free walks and gardens generate no pass savings. |
Your itinerary, ready to save
Day 1 — historic centre, Petrov and gardens
Begin at Zelný trh and Parnas fountain, continue along Radnická to the Old Town Hall and decide whether to climb the tower. Continue to the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul on Petrov and walk through Denisovy sady. For dinner, we suggest returning through the centre to Lokál U Caipla, Kozí 115/3.
Prefer an alternative? If you do not want to pay for the tower, observe the portal and continue to Petrov and Denisovy sady. The route retains architecture and views without depending on the climb.Day 2 — Špilberk and reservoirs
Walk up through Špilberk park in the morning and explore the outside of the castle complex. Include the casemates only if they interest you and you have time before the next visit. After a lunch break, continue to Žlutý kopec reservoirs at Tvrdého 15, having checked the type of visit and opening hours.
Prefer an alternative? If the reservoirs are closed or you prefer to avoid paying for that visit, walk from Špilberk to Mendlovo náměstí in Staré Brno to view the outside of the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady.Day 3 — Lužánky and villas
Start at Moravské náměstí, follow Třída Kapitána Jaroše and cross Lužánky. Continue to Villa Löw-Beer, Drobného 297/22, explore the garden and take a break at Café Löw-Beer if it is serving. Follow the path between the gardens to Tugendhat. If you book a guided tour, organise the rest of the day around that time.
Prefer an alternative? If you cannot secure a guided tour of Tugendhat and want to see an interior with historical content, choose Villa Löw-Beer’s permanent exhibition. To keep the day free of admission costs, enjoy Lužánky, the villa gardens and Tugendhat’s free technical exhibition, checking their opening hours. Before you go
- Information consulted on 9 October 2026: check opening and ticket conditions for your dates before finalising reservations.
- Keep arrival and departure outside the three sightseeing days. If a Monday is included, use it for the outdoor Zelný trh, Petrov and Denisovy sady route.
- Consulted reservoir hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:00, at Tvrdého 15.
- Tugendhat lists Tuesday-to-Sunday opening, 10:00–18:00. Check guided-visit availability separately and any adverse-weather garden restrictions.
- Before booking accommodation, simulate DPMB journeys from the exact address to the main station and Černopolní or Drobného.
- For contactless payment, use the same card or device for every tap. Check journey zones and do not confuse the calendar-day cap with a 24-hour ticket.
- Check Lokál U Caipla service and menus and Café Löw-Beer’s own hours; garden opening does not establish café service.
- If in Brno on 14–18 October 2026, check BRNO16’s screening, venue, language, subtitles and participation conditions before arranging the evening.
Questions to help you decide
Do I need to hire a car in Brno?
For this itinerary, combine walking with trams, buses and trolleybuses. The main railway station is central. Check DPMB’s planner for routes between accommodation and attractions, particularly the villas.
If I want only a few paid attractions, which should I choose?
We suggest prioritising Žlutý kopec reservoirs if you enjoy industrial architecture. If residential architecture interests you more, Tugendhat’s guided tour may be your first choice. Add the Old Town Hall tower and Špilberk casemates according to your interests, without feeling you need to buy every ticket.
Can I explore Villa Tugendhat without paying for the guided visit?
Yes. The institution states free entry to the garden and technical-floor exhibitions during opening hours, without a guide. The guided interior visit is separate. The garden may close in adverse weather.
Which area makes most sense for accommodation?
First compare accommodation between the main station, Zelný trh and náměstí Svobody for convenient arrival and sightseeing in the centre. The area around Lužánky and Drobného suits the day visiting the villas. Neither location establishes a lower nightly rate: compare the total cost of the stay and your journeys.
Does BRNOPAS+ always save money?
Not automatically. BRNOPAS+ with reservoirs has one-, two- and three-day versions, but its benefit depends on admissions and discounts actually used. Compare after choosing paid visits.
How can I adapt the three days if there is a Monday?
Use Monday for Zelný trh, Petrov surroundings and Denisovy sady. Consulted hours show the reservoirs and Tugendhat closed Mondays. Distribute these outings over other days, checking dates before booking.
