GETTING STARTED

Devote one day to the centre, another to Praça da Liberdade and another to Pampulha. The sequence combines Mercado Central, stops for Minas Gerais cuisine, MM Gerdau, Casa do Baile and Casa Kubitschek, with transport and accommodation choices based on their exact locations. These are three full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure.

Who it is for: Travellers wanting to combine culture, Minas Gerais food and walks in three full sightseeing days while controlling admission and transport costs.

Three days, one area each day

You can combine markets, museums and architecture in three days in BH without crossing the city for every outing. My suggestion is a day in the centre, one around Praça da Liberdade and one in Pampulha. Group nearby visits, plan meals along the way and save longer journeys for when they make sense.

These are three full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. This cultural itinerary offers a selection of Belo Horizonte’s sights: explore Mercado Central’s aisles, discover the world of minerals at MM Gerdau and visit modernist buildings in Pampulha. Allow extra days for day trips.

The order can change to suit the calendar. Schedule Pampulha between Wednesday and Sunday, when Casa do Baile and Casa Kubitschek list regular opening. Wednesday to Sunday is also the easiest option for combining the Liberdade day with MM Gerdau and lunch at Café do Museu.

Choose accommodation based on its address and your itinerary

Begin your accommodation search by comparing two options: the centre, at an address near the markets, and Funcionários or Savassi, with convenient access to Praça da Liberdade. The first works well for the shopping and food day; the second suits the cultural visits and an area described in the official guide for its cafés and restaurants.

Open the map for each property and check the journeys to Mercado Central, Praça da Liberdade and Pampulha. Consider the nightly rate and transport together: a more distant property may require extra rides, while a convenient location may allow you to explore part of the day on foot. This research did not verify room rates that would establish one neighbourhood as cheaper than another.

Day 1: Mercado Central with lunch along the way

Begin day one at Mercado Central. Established in 1929 and with around 400 shops, it offers a morning of looking at products, exploring aisles and getting to know local businesses. You need not turn the visit into a shopping list: allow time to look around and decide what you really want to take home.

For lunch, we suggest Casa Cheia, listed by the market itself as a bar and restaurant in Corredor do Artesanato, upper floor, units 914/915/167. The advantage for this itinerary is straightforward: you eat where you already are, saving a journey just for food.

Restaurante Jorge Americano, units 150/170 in Setor Santa Catarina, is the alternative in the same market. The directory presents Minas Gerais cooking and set meals; check the day’s menu and prices before choosing. After lunch, continue to Parque Municipal.

Starting at Mercado Central combines browsing the aisles and lunch at the same address.

An afternoon between Parque Municipal and Palácio das Artes

After the market, we suggest walking to Parque Municipal Américo Renné Giannetti if you have the energy. Enter at Avenida Afonso Pena, 1377, for a break among trees, ponds and paths. Admission is free; this does not extend to every activity, such as amusement-park rides.

Combine the park with Palácio das Artes at number 1537 on the same avenue. The complex includes galleries, theatres and Cine Humberto Mauro. It is worth including to combine time outdoors with the city’s cultural offerings; check which rooms and activities are available. The listing states free entry, but this does not establish that all performances are free; Galeria Guignard is marked temporarily closed.

In rain, swap the park walk for Mercado Novo, Avenida Olegário Maciel, 742. The official guide describes bars, restaurants, shops and cultural spaces, offering a covered alternative still connected to central commerce. On Sunday, another adaptation is starting at Feira da Afonso Pena, listed 08:00–14:00, then continuing to Mercado Central.

Day 2: Praça da Liberdade, a free museum and food stops

Begin day two in the gardens of Praça da Liberdade in Funcionários, and see how the surrounding buildings tell the story of former public buildings becoming cultural venues. Here, the route itself saves journeys: the square, museum and lunch stop are all in the same area.

Visit MM Gerdau — Museu das Minas e do Metal in Prédio Rosa, Praça da Liberdade, 680. This free museum focuses on minerals and metals and deserves time of its own, rather than a quick stop while looking at façades. Published opening is Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30. On Thursdays it stays open until 22:00, with last entry at 21:30; check for possible changes.

For coffee during the visit, Queijo e Cultura Lab Café operates inside the museum. As a training café, it involves INHAC students and supports local producers, an interesting connection with the food that forms part of the trip. Confirm service because the page consulted gives conflicting hours.

For lunch, we suggest Café do Museu, a bistro in CCBB’s courtyard at Praça da Liberdade, 450. The official page lists meals, snacks and vegetarian options, with opening from Wednesday to Monday, 11:00–22:00. For a shorter break, Frau Bondan is also in the courtyard. Food and drinks cost extra. Afterwards, return to the square’s gardens; if it is Thursday and you want a later start, reverse the sequence and visit MM Gerdau during its extended hours.

Day 3: Pampulha in a single outing

Set aside day three for Pampulha, in this order: Casa do Baile → Igreja São Francisco de Assis and Praça Dino Barbieri → Museu Casa Kubitschek. This keeps the visits within a single trip to the area and combines three ways to explore its architecture: a cultural venue, a sanctuary and a former weekend residence.

Begin at Casa do Baile, Avenida Otacílio Negrão de Lima, 751. It houses Centro de Referência de Arquitetura, Urbanismo e Design, has free entry and lists Wednesday-to-Sunday opening, 10:00–18:00. The visit is to the building and cultural space; Casa do Baile does not currently operate as a restaurant.

Continue to the outside of Igreja São Francisco de Assis and to Praça Dino Barbieri. Observe the curves of Niemeyer’s design and the building’s relationship with its surroundings. This itinerary includes viewing the exterior: the research did not establish opening hours, tickets or conditions for visiting the interior.

Finish at Museu Casa Kubitschek, Avenida Otacílio Negrão de Lima, 4188. The residence built for Juscelino Kubitschek’s weekends reveals domestic architecture, furniture and gardens designed by Burle Marx. Entry is free, with published Wednesday-to-Sunday opening, 10:00–18:00.

Plan transport between the stops to suit your chosen routes; a full circuit of the lagoon is not a short walk. We suggest bringing a snack and allowing a break between visits, without relying on food being available at Casa do Baile. Museu de Arte da Pampulha is excluded from interior visits on this itinerary because the official February 2026 guide records its interior as closed for restoration.

If travelling on 10 and 11 October 2026

For anyone in BH on 10 and 11 October 2026, the official events listings consulted on 9 October offer two specific additions to the itinerary. Festival Fartura BH 2026 takes place at Praça José Mendes Júnior on 10/10/2026, 12:00–22:00, and 11/10/2026, 11:00–19:00. Food from different Brazilian regions, producers, cooking demonstrations and cultural performances make it a complement to the Liberdade day. Check tickets and conditions before including it: do not assume participation or food is free.

For families, Brincadeiras de Quintal takes place at Museu Casa Kubitschek on 10/10/2026, 15:30–17:30. It uses garden elements in games for children and adults, is free, suitable for all ages and requires no advance registration. That Saturday, visit Casa do Baile and the church first and finish at the museum in time to join.

To fit both events, we suggest Saturday 10 October for Pampulha and Sunday 11 October for Liberdade and Fartura. On other dates, retain the regular itinerary: these are dated options rather than permanent attractions.

Where to avoid journeys and how to plan necessary ones

To reach your accommodation, compare Conexão Aeroporto with a direct transfer. BH Airport’s website lists connections to Pampulha Airport, Belo Horizonte Bus Terminal and Avenida Álvares Cabral, directing readers to the operator for routes and timetables. In your comparison, add the final journey from the bus stop or terminal to your accommodation, and consider the number of travellers and their luggage. No fare or journey duration was verified that would establish one option as better.

For outings, one choice is already available: avoid returning to the centre mid-way through Pampulha day or crossing the city solely for lunch. For municipal journeys, the city recommends consulting routes, itineraries and stops through Sumob and lists apps including SIUMOBILE, BHBUS+, Bus2, Cittamobi and Moovit.

Check the outward and return journeys before setting out, as well as connections between Casa do Baile, the church and Casa Kubitschek. In the centre and Liberdade, walk between nearby attractions as your mobility allows; use transport where it helps, without assuming the whole itinerary must be done on foot.

Turn the itinerary into a budget and checklist

To estimate your budget, enter the destination, total length of stay, number of people and travel style in Calculadora de Custos de Viagem. It gives reference figures in reais for accommodation, food and transport, plus a 15% margin. Treat the result as an illustrative estimate and compare it with the room rates and journeys you have actually researched; it is not a quotation.

The itinerary includes visits with free entry established by the sources, but you still need to budget for meals, transport, shopping and any event tickets. Set aside a separate allowance for Mercado Central and, if it is part of the trip, Festival Fartura. That way, the cost of trying something to eat is accounted for alongside the free sightseeing.

After choosing your days, turn the plan into a Mala Inteligente checklist. Enter the full duration, including arrival and departure, the travellers and the climate profile that suits the forecast checked shortly before your trip. For these routes, we suggest checking comfortable shoes, rain protection and your personal items before closing your suitcase.

Which option suits you?

OptionA good fit if…What to consider
Centre: Mercado Central, Parque Municipal and Palácio das ArtesFor those wanting to begin with markets and combine shopping, lunch and an outdoor outing.Park access is free, but meals, purchases and some cultural programming cost extra.

Accommodation in the centre, near the marketsYou want the markets near your base when heading out and returning.Makes day one easier but still requires assessing journeys to Liberdade and Pampulha; no room rates were verified to establish lower costs.
Accommodation in Funcionários or SavassiFor those valuing Liberdade day and the surrounding cafés and restaurants. The benefit depends on the exact address. Compare room rate plus journeys without assuming savings from the neighbourhood’s name.

Questions to help you decide

Which itinerary visits have free admission?

The sources establish free admission to Parque Municipal, MM Gerdau, Casa do Baile and Museu Casa Kubitschek. There may be a charge for rides in the park. The Palácio das Artes listing states free entry, but shows and activities must be checked individually.

Can everything be done on foot?

In the centre and around Praça da Liberdade, you can walk between nearby attractions as your energy and mobility allow. In Pampulha, plan the journeys between the three stops: a complete circuit of the lagoon should not be treated as a short walk.

How can I adapt the itinerary to the days of the week?

For Casa do Baile and Casa Kubitschek interiors, place Pampulha between Wednesday and Sunday according to published regular opening. MM Gerdau opens Tuesday to Sunday. Rearrange days before booking activities.

Where should I look for accommodation to reduce travel?

Compare accommodation in the centre near the markets with properties in Funcionários or Savassi conveniently placed for Praça da Liberdade. Add the nightly rate and expected transport costs. The evidence does not establish which neighbourhood is cheapest.

Does the itinerary include going inside Igreja São Francisco de Assis?

The proposal is to observe the exterior and explore the Praça Dino Barbieri surroundings. Research did not establish interior visiting hours, tickets or access conditions.

Do the three days include arrival, departure and day trips?

They are three full days devoted to the centre, Liberdade and Pampulha, excluding arrival and departure. This is a cultural selection of the city; other neighbourhoods and day trips require a longer stay.
