Girona in three days without a car: where to stay and which visits to pay for
Three full days in Girona car-free: where to stay, routes linking bridges, Call and walls, tickets to choose, food stops and concrete alternatives.

GETTING STARTED
Allow three full days, excluding arrival and departure. Start with the Onyar, the Call and the city walls; combine the Cathedral, Sant Feliu and your chosen indoor visits on the second day; finish with the Museu del Cinema, Santa Clara and Devesa. Look for accommodation based on the route from the station, and choose tickets according to your interests to avoid overlapping purchases.
Who it is for: Brazilians setting aside three full days for Girona as part of a longer trip through Catalonia, excluding arrival and departure, who want to walk, choose a convenient area to stay in and avoid overlapping tickets.Three full days, exploring one part of the city at a time
You can plan three very different days in Girona without adding a car to the budget: first, bridges, the Call and the city walls; then, the Cathedral and nearby monuments; finally, cinema, Santa Clara and a walk through Devesa. The key to keeping costs under control is deciding which interiors interest you before you start buying tickets.
This itinerary covers three full days within a longer trip through Catalonia. Arrival and departure are not included in that count. Renfe confirms the Barcelona Sants–Girona connection and places the station in the central area; check the options for your travel date rather than relying on a generic timetable.
The city council describes short distances within the city and a bus network serving its neighbourhoods. My suggestion is to cover the central routes on foot and use buses when needed. That way, you do not need to include car hire automatically in your budget or pay for transport every time you cross the river.
Where to stay: choose based on the route you will use repeatedly
For this itinerary, I would start looking for accommodation between the station and Mercadal. It is a practical fit: you arrive by train, drop off your luggage and have a convenient base for the day at the Museu del Cinema and walks along the Onyar. This does not mean the area always has the lowest nightly rates.
The Barri Vell makes more sense if your priority is to wake up near Carrer de la Força and start with the monuments. Before booking, check the route from the station, changes in elevation along the way and how easy it is to access the property with a suitcase. Compare the total cost of your stay alongside these practical considerations.
No specific hotels were verified in this research. The suggestions below are intended to guide your search by location, without promising any standard of accommodation, availability or price.
- Between the station and Mercadal: this is a suggestion for those arriving by train who want to make carrying their luggage easier. The Museu del Cinema is in Mercadal, and Santa Clara is part of the third day's walk.
- Barri Vell, using Carrer de la Força as a reference point: this is a suggestion for those who want to prioritise the Call, the Cathedral and history museums. Check the actual route to your accommodation's door.
- Near Santa Clara: this is a suggestion for those who would prefer to use the Onyar bridges as a daily reference point and explore both banks throughout their stay.
Day 1: from the Onyar bridges to the history of the Call
Start your first day at Pont de Pedra. From there, look at the façades facing the Onyar, follow the Rambla and cross Pont de les Peixateries Velles, the red metal bridge. The appeal of this sequence is comparing views of the river as you get your bearings in the city, without committing the start of your morning to an indoor visit.
Then return to the historic-centre side of the river and head to the Call. At Carrer de la Força, 8, the Museu d’Història dels Jueus provides context for the walk: it focuses on medieval Jewish communities in Catalonia, with particular attention to Girona. This is a paid visit that relates directly to the streets you will explore that day.
From September to June, the museum opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00, and on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays from 10:00 to 14:00. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. If it closes early that day, reverse the order and visit the museum first. Free admission on the first Sunday of each month can help your budget if it coincides with your trip, but it does not automatically include guided tours and activities.

Lunch in Sant Domènec and an afternoon on the city walls
After the Call, my suggestion for lunch is Cafè Le Bistrot, at Pujada de Sant Domènec, 4. The restaurant's own website describes home-style cooking and highlights dishes served on pa de pagès. Its location makes the stop fit naturally into the route to Sant Domènec, without requiring a trip to another neighbourhood just to eat. Confirm service times and booking arrangements; no prices or dishes are guaranteed for your travel date.
Continue through the Sant Domènec area and set aside the afternoon for the city walls. The city council confirms that there is a walkable route along sections of the structure and that the towers serve as viewpoints. After a morning among façades and interiors, this is a chance to move from street-level detail to a broader view of the city.
Try to take this walk while there is still daylight. Published opening hours are 08:00 to 21:00 from September to May and 08:00 to 23:00 from June to August, but the page consulted does not state that access is free. If it rains, move the Museu del Cinema to this afternoon, subject to its opening schedule, and save the walls for the third day.

After Sant Domènec, the city walls feature in the itinerary as a walk with views over the city.

Day 2: choose your Cathedral ticket according to what you want to visit
On the second day, start with the Cathedral and combine it with a visit to the Basílica de Sant Feliu. Before buying tickets, answer one question: do you also want to visit the Museu d’Art? The Cathedral administration offers Girona Monumental, which covers both churches, and Girona Episcopal, which adds the museum. The venues can be visited on separate days.
To choose based on what you will see, consider this: the Cathedral treasury includes the Tapís de la Creació, while the Museu d’Art houses artistic heritage with a particular focus on Romanesque and Gothic works. If the latter interests you, set aside the afternoon for it and consider Girona Episcopal. Otherwise, Girona Monumental is a better match for your choices, without adding a visit simply because it is included in the package.
Between 1 November and 14 March, the Cathedral lists cultural visiting hours as 10:00 to 16:30 Monday to Saturday and 12:00 to 16:30 on Sundays, with exceptions for religious services. Free access to the nave during specific morning periods is not equivalent to the full cultural visit. Use this distinction to decide what you want to see, without assuming free access to the treasury.

The staircase marks your arrival at the Cathedral; your ticket choice depends on whether you want to include the Museu d’Art in your sightseeing.

Banys Àrabs: an extra ticket that makes sense for architecture enthusiasts
The Banys Àrabs, on Ferran el Catòlic, fit well into the same day as the Cathedral and Sant Feliu. Despite the name, the city council describes a 12th-century Romanesque building inspired by Roman baths. The former changing room and the central pool beneath a dome supported by columns are reasons to consider paying for admission.
This is a visit to a historic monument, not a bathing experience. There is an admission charge; I would prioritise it for anyone interested in architecture and drop another paid visit, such as the Museu del Cinema, if the budget requires a choice.
On Sundays and public holidays, visit the baths earlier: the city council lists closing time as 14:00. Since the venue's website was unavailable during the research, confirm the hours before setting out. On a winter Sunday, this arrangement allows you to leave the Cathedral until after cultural visits begin at 12:00.

An afternoon of art or a partial visit to the history museum
If you chose Girona Episcopal, devote the afternoon of the second day to the Museu d’Art. Its Romanesque and Gothic works continue the exploration of religious heritage from the morning. With this combination, my suggestion is to treat the Banys Àrabs as optional, so you do not pile up admission fees and consecutive indoor visits.
For an alternative without another admission charge, consider the accessible areas of the Museu d’Història de Girona, at Carrer de la Força, 27. An official notice dated 14 October 2026 announced that the first floor would close for an exhibition installation, with free access to the other available areas during the restriction. This is a partial visit: do not expect the full museum route or access to the Roman and medieval galleries, whose displays have been dismantled.
Confirm opening hours and whether these arrangements are still in place before visiting. The first floor was scheduled to reopen in early May 2027. If you have already visited the interiors you wanted to see, finish the afternoon with a walk along Carrer de la Força and back to Pont de Pedra, without feeling obliged to add another admission.
Day 3: cinema in Mercadal, a stop in Santa Clara and Devesa
The third day changes the subject with the Museu del Cinema, in the former Casa de les Aigües in Mercadal, at Carrer de la Sèquia, 1. The Tomàs Mallol collection traces the history of moving images, from shadow theatre to cinema. It is worth choosing if you want a different experience after the churches and medieval history.
From September to June, the museum opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00 and on Sundays from 10:00 to 14:00; it closes on Mondays that are not public holidays. Last admission is 45 minutes before closing. That is why it is scheduled for the morning in this itinerary. If your third day is a Monday that is not a public holiday, visit it on the first day and leave Sant Domènec and the walls for Monday.
Afterwards, continue along Santa Clara. Rocambolesc lists Gelateria Girona at number 50 and a confectionery shop next door specialising in sweets, caramels and chocolates. This is an optional stop that fits the route to the bridges; choose whichever shop appeals to you, without assuming that the flavours or opening hours of one apply to the other.
For the afternoon, my suggestion is to walk around the Devesa area and finish without another admission charge, or return to Pont de les Peixateries Velles for another look at the Onyar. If rain prevented your walk on the walls, use this afternoon for them and leave out Devesa.
An evening of jazz for those travelling from 20 to 22 November 2026
If your three days are 20 to 22 November 2026, there is a confirmed musical option that fits the itinerary: Uri Caine & Girona Jazz Project performs on 21 November 2026 at 20:00 at the Auditori de Girona, at Passeig de la Devesa, 35. It is an option for adding an evening of jazz to your heritage sightseeing.
In that case, move the Devesa walk to Saturday afternoon and plan your arrival at the Auditori according to your ticket. The official programme was consulted on 7 November 2026, but seat availability and prices were not checked. The concert is an optional extra expense, not a necessary part of the three days.
For other dates, keep the basic itinerary and check the programme for your stay. This recommendation refers exclusively to the performance on 21 November 2026.
How to control costs while making the most of all three days
The most tangible savings in this itinerary come from grouping visits, choosing accommodation based on your route and buying only the tickets you intend to use. This research includes no price quotes for trains, accommodation or food, so it cannot promise a cheap trip or claim that a combined ticket will always be the least expensive option.
Start your budget with accommodation, trains for arrival and departure, food and your selected visits. Add buses or taxis if they make sense for you, and treat the concert as optional. Free access to part of the Museu d’Història de Girona is a real possibility while the announced arrangements remain in effect; the absence of a price on the city walls page, however, does not establish that access is free.
Use Viajandar's Calculadora de custos to build an illustrative estimate in Brazilian reais with editable amounts you have researched. It does not provide exchange rates or international price quotes: its reference amounts do not represent prices in Girona. For expenses in euros, convert them separately before recording your budget in reais.
Then use Mala Inteligente to turn the itinerary into a checklist: footwear for days of walking, layers of clothing to suit the forecast, rain protection, and arrangements for keeping tickets and reservations organised. That way, your next step follows directly from the outings you have chosen.
- If history is your priority, keep the Museu d’Història dels Jueus in your plans and choose your Cathedral ticket option according to your interest in the Museu d’Art.
- If architecture comes first, consider the Banys Àrabs and leave the Museu del Cinema as optional.
- If you want a variety of subjects, combine the Call and the Cathedral with the Museu del Cinema, without automatically adding all the other interiors.
- If the dates coincide, take advantage of free admission on the first Sunday at the Museu d’Història dels Jueus and the Museu del Cinema. Do not change an entire trip without comparing the effect on your other costs.
Which option suits you?
| Option | A good fit if… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation between the station and Mercadal | You want to make the journey with your suitcase easier and divide your sightseeing between both banks of the Onyar. | This is a location suggestion, not a guarantee of a lower nightly rate. Compare the exact address and the route to the accommodation. |
| Accommodation in the Barri Vell | You prefer to start your days with the Call, the Cathedral and nearby monuments. | The location suits heritage sightseeing, but you should check the route with luggage, changes in elevation and access to the property. |
| Girona Monumental | The Cathedral and the Basílica de Sant Feliu are priorities, but the Museu d’Art is not on your list. | It covers both churches. Check what the ticket includes before buying separate admissions. |
| Girona Episcopal | You want to add Romanesque and Gothic art to your visits to the churches. | It includes the Museu d’Art as well as the Cathedral and Sant Feliu. Make room in your itinerary for the museum; do not choose the package simply because it covers more places. |
| Museu d’Història dels Jueus | You want to understand the history of Jewish communities as you explore the Call. | It fits into the first day. Admission is free on the first Sunday of the month, but this does not automatically include activities and guided tours. |
| Banys Àrabs | You are more interested in historic architecture than in another museum collection. | There is an admission charge, and the visit combines well with the Cathedral and Sant Feliu. On Sundays and public holidays, the city council lists closing time as 14:00. |
| Museu del Cinema | You want a change of subject after the churches and medieval streets. | The collection spans shadow theatre to cinema. From September to June, the museum closes on Mondays that are not public holidays and closes at 14:00 on Sundays. |
| Accessible areas of the Museu d’Història de Girona | You are looking for an indoor visit without adding another admission charge to your budget. | Access is free during a partial restriction announced in October 2026. The first floor is closed; this is not the full museum visit. |

Questions to help you decide
Do I need to hire a car for three days in Girona?
For this central itinerary, you can plan your sightseeing on foot and use buses when necessary. The city council describes short distances within the city and a network serving its neighbourhoods. Renfe confirms the Barcelona Sants–Girona connection; check the trains for your travel date before buying tickets.
Do the three days include arrival and departure?
No. These are three full days of sightseeing within a longer trip through Catalonia. Arrive before the first day and leave after the third. If transport takes up part of that time, drop a visit instead of trying to fit everything in.
Which area makes the most sense for accommodation?
My suggestion for those arriving by train is to start looking between the station and Mercadal. If your priority is to step out of your accommodation straight into the historic sights, compare addresses in the Barri Vell. The choice depends on the route with your suitcase and the total cost of the stay, not just the neighbourhood's name.
Which combined ticket should I choose?
Girona Monumental covers the Cathedral and Sant Feliu; Girona Episcopal adds the Museu d’Art. The Museu d’Història dels Jueus and the Museu del Cinema cover different subjects and should be chosen according to your interests. This research includes no price comparison that would establish which combination costs less.
Are the Cathedral and city walls free?
The Cathedral lists free access to the nave only during specific morning periods, which is not equivalent to the cultural visit. The source consulted about the city walls confirms the route and opening hours but does not explicitly state that access is free.
How can I adapt the itinerary if it rains?
Schedule the Museu del Cinema for the morning of a day when it is open and move the city walls to a period of better weather. From September to June, a Monday that is not a public holiday requires another choice: the Museu d’Història dels Jueus lists opening hours of 10:00 to 14:00 that day.
